Illegal immigrants from Bangladesh have occupied land and built illegal properties all across Bengal. Many of the properties are built near drains into which these Bangladeshis dump their waste, thereby blocking them and causing drainage issues. The Government is now on a demolition drive. This work shouldn't stop - it should go on 24/7, 365 days until Bengal is free of illegal immigrants.

The ongoing enforcement around the Ikota area in Lekki is not targeted at any tribe or group. Earlier in the year 2025, we inspected the Ikota River setback alignment areas and issued removal notices to affected homeowners. The truth is simple: water and hazards know no tribe, colour, or race. The buildings being removed were erected on the right of way of ikota River , directly obstructing natural channels and worsening flash flooding in the area; especially the Lekki - Ajah corridor (System 156, 157, 44, 44A, and 46). Only structures within the right of way are being removed. Our goal is to restore the waterways, reduce flooding, and protect lives. We will continue to engage residents with empathy, but non-compliance will not be overlooked irrespective of whom is affected. This is about safeguarding everyone, not targeting anyone. The recent flooding on the Island calls for our collective support for finding permanent solution to those issue. We cannot keep complaining of an issue and still attack government for providing solution to said issue. It is all for a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.

The rains have started, and we urge all motorists driving within Nairobi County to exercise extra caution. We are putting all hawkers on notice, especially those operating within the CBD and irresponsibly dumping waste particularly tea and coffee hawkers. Their careless disposal of garbage is blocking our stormwater drainage systems, which is a major cause of flooding in the city whenever it rains. Developers and all residents are reminded to strictly follow the law and avoid encroaching on drainage channels. All illegal structures constructed on top of or along drainage systems will be removed. We are committed to restoring order in Nairobi. We are also warning those who have encroached along riverbanks and riparian zones move away immediately before you are swept away by the floods. We shall move in and demolish all illegal structures along riparian areas. These zones are not meant for settlement or construction and must be protected. These decisions may not be popular, but they are necessary. Fixing our drainage system is not just about today it’s about building a better, safer city for tomorrow. One day, you will celebrate the work we are doing to make Nairobi cleaner, safer, and more resilient.

Two years since this conference were an Arise Tv Journalist asked Umahi about the EIA report of the coast road project and Umahi attempted to clown the lady and write off the question. Today, The coastal road is now causing serious flooding problems for Lekki Peninsula residents. This could have been avoided if Umahi had listened to the concern of many Nigerians in regard to the environmental impact of the project instead of serving his political boss. If you are living in along Coastal road of the Lekki peninsula, this right here is the genesis of your flooding problem.

LAWMA has stepped up Surveillance and Enforcement Unit and compliance operations along the Brand New Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road corridor. After serving a 7-day abatement notice with no compliance, we are left with no choice but to take decisive action. Protecting the integrity of our drainage channels is key to preventing flooding and safeguarding lives and property. No structure has the right to obstruct water flow. Earlier today, I led an extensive inspection tour of critical drainage infrastructure and flood mitigation projects across Lekki, Agungi, Ikota and Ajiran, and what we uncovered demands immediate and decisive action. The persistent flooding in Agungi despite the completion of major drainage infrastructure over two years ago has a clear cause. At Ajiran, we discovered that a land owning family deliberately blocked the outfall channel that was specifically designed to discharge stormwater by gravity into the Lagos Lagoon. I have directed that the outlet be reopened immediately in the overriding public interest. Let me state clearly: no individual or family has the right to obstruct natural watercourses or public drainage infrastructure regardless of their land titles. We are not taking anyone's land. We are simply restoring the channel to allow water to flow freely and protect thousands of residents from avoidable flooding. At Megamond Estate in Ikota, we found that developers had illegally reclaimed part of the Ikota River and commenced construction without obtaining the necessary environmental and drainage approvals. Enforcement and abatement notices had been served previously but were ignored. From tomorrow morning, all illegal structures erected on reclaimed drainage alignments without approval in that estate will be removed. This action sends a clear message that Lagos will not tolerate encroachment on drainage channels or public infrastructure. I also reiterate that any development involving wetlands or water related projects must obtain an Environmental Impact Assessment and Wetland Clearance from the Ministry before any reclamation or construction begins. We do not care whose ox is gored. It is unfair to law abiding residents and unacceptable because it compromises public safety. I urge every Lagosian to remain vigilant. The illegal activities we uncovered today came to our attention through whistleblowers. We investigated, verified, and acted. See something, say something - constructively. We are fully committed to a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.

Today’s heavy rainfall put to test our drainage systems in Kampala, and the results are encouraging, although we have not yet achieved our target level of resilience. Areas including Sebana Road, Clock Tower,forest mall, golf course and Allen Road experienced flash floods, but in most of them the water cleared within about seven minutes, compared to past incidents where flooding would last for hours or days and disrupt businesses immensly. This improvement follows recent Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) drainage upgrades, including the construction of 16 crossing culverts along Allen Road and Sebana Road into Nakivubo Channel has increased the city’s capacity to tame storm water. Additional works are ongoing, including longitudinal drainage along Ben Kiwanuka Street and a planned box culvert on Namirembe Road under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Project. Two buildings, Totala Business and Qualicell, experienced basement flooding due to drainage challenges internal to them, and the KCCA drainage team has been quickly deployed with suction trucks to support them evacuate the water. As drainage improvement works continue, inconvenience caused by this natural occurrence is regreted. Our call on residents, traders & building owners is to dispose of waste responsibly and avoid blocking drainage channels.
