Today, our LAWMA Project WISE team joined Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), the Nigeria Police and OP MESA military personnel in a coordinated enforcement operation across the Ketu–Mile 12 corridor, including Ketu Bus Stop and Ile Ile. The operation focused on clearing illegal trading activities from walkways, road setbacks and other unauthorised spaces that had obstructed pedestrian movement and contributed to poor environmental conditions in the area. Beyond clearing the affected locations, the more important task is preventing a return to the same conditions. Our teams are therefore maintaining a presence in the corridor to discourage immediate reoccupation and ensure that the gains from the exercise are sustained. Lagos is a densely populated city where public space is under constant pressure. Keeping our roads, walkways and public spaces clean and accessible requires consistent enforcement, but it also requires cooperation from traders, residents and businesses. We will continue to work with our sister agencies to restore order in identified environmental hotspots and protect public spaces for their intended use. On Tuesday, I led a joint enforcement operation with LASTMA and LAWMA on Lekki Beach Road, a newly reconstructed concrete-paved corridor currently in use but under threat from illegal structures, abandoned vehicles, and makeshift repair workshops. This road is a critical access route to the Coastal Road from Jakande (Lekki-Epe Expressway) and must not be compromised by misuse or encroachment. The obstructions have been cleared. The exercise is being carried out by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), LAWMA, and other relevant stakeholders. The expansive road median was deliberately constructed by the Lagos State Government to accommodate the Lagos Rail Mass Transit project. As a major gateway into Nigeria from other West African countries, this corridor is of significant economic and strategic importance and reflects the image of our state. It is therefore unacceptable for such critical public infrastructure, built with taxpayers’ resources, to be occupied by illegal traders and other unauthorised occupants. We want to assure Lagosians that the State Government will sustain regular monitoring and enforcement along this corridor.
