First impressions count. When our Keepers meet fragile, vulnerable orphaned rhinos for the first time, they maintain a calming, protective, and comforting presence. This is one of Tytan’s first moments at the Nursery – after his dramatic rescue following his mother's tragic cliff fall. Still rather wild-eyed, but slowly... warming up – scratches are the way to a rhino’s heart! Day and night, someone sat vigil with him, until his nerves and suspicions had evaporated and turned into half-hearted snuffles and snorts. We bet you've never thought about what a rhino sounds like. While these squeaking babies are undeniably adorable, their vocalisations are part of a surprisingly effective rhino "language". Tytan communicates constantly with his Keepers through huffs, puffs, snorts, and squeaks. Each sound carries meaning. When they spotted him, forlorn and lonely, they knew immediately something was wrong. Hours later, and with the help of rangers, they established he was an orphan. And a rescue began. Precious cargo onboard! This was Arthi’s rescue ride to safety — he’s a small elephant, but it was a tight squeeze nonetheless. Arthi had been found alone by our pilot in the dense Tsavo bush back in August. At approximately one year old, the distressed baby faced starvation and predation without his herd. He actually enjoyed two rides in our aircraft - landing first at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery for an overnight pitstop, before boarding another flight to our Nairobi Nursery. We named him Arthi – a twist on the Athi River, near where he was found. Incredibly, Arthi's rescue would lead to not one, but two lives saved. On the way to collect him, our pilot spotted an adult bull with a severe limp. They made a note of his location, and following Arthi's rescue, they returned and successfully treated the bull. But back to Arthi...This sweet boy is the newest orphan to join our adoption program. Become one of his first adopters: #RescueRaiseReintegrate

Our proverbial door is always left open for the ex-orphans to come visit. After eight months away, Chemi Chemi just sauntered in! We rescued Chemi Chemi in June 2009 from Loisaba Conservancy – a young bull, eight months old, in desperate need of food and company. Brought to Nairobi where we gave him one-to-one care from our Keepers and the comfort and company of a new herd, he recovered. When he outgrew the Nursery, he graduated to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit alongside his bull friends – and the rest, as they say, is history. Nineteen years on from his rescue, Chemi Chemi is wild. Those friendships from his Nursery days and the bonds forged with his Keepers are still going strong – he still drops by our Ithumba Unit every few months. Wondering how we know its him? Breakfast for Bumpy. He's one of our newest orphans, at our Kaluku Neonate Unit in Tsavo. His mother was killed – likely defending him in a territorial fight – and he spent at least a day alone beside her before the Kenya Wildlife Service brought him in. He's a baby hippo. Hippos start their lives in water and learn to nurse beneath the surface, diving and resurfacing for breath between sips. Bumpy's bottle feeds are easier – no diving required. That distinctive hooked upper lip? It's the hallmark of a black rhino. Chamboi demonstrates it beautifully here. Unlike white rhinos, whose wide, flat mouths are built for grazing grass, black rhinos have a prehensile lip perfectly designed for browsing – plucking leaves, twigs and shoots from bushes and trees. Chamboi is one of 5,500 black rhinos left in the world. From a tiny, fragile orphaned infant, he has grown into a hulking teenager who will one day return to the wild. Yesterday, we introduced you to our newest addition, Bumpy the orphaned hippo. This was his flight down to Kaluku. He was a perfect passenger – he scrambled right into Keeper Joseph's lap and spent most of the trip chattering in little hippo grunts! Bumpy is very new to the fold – he was rescued over the weekend. There is something unmistakably regal about Alamaya these days. It is hard to square with the calf who arrived at the Nairobi Nursery in March 2015 – tail bitten clean off, injuries so severe his Keepers could barely assess the full extent of them. He had survived a night in the Mara alone, ravaged by hyenas, and made it to us by the narrowest of margins. He is 12 years old now. Still a fixture of the Umani Springs herd, still returning to the unit he knows as home – but increasingly on his own terms, as a wild elephant finding his place in the Kibwezi Forest. The Maa word for brave is Alamaya. His Keepers chose well. Discover Alamaya’s story:

Tali is growing stronger every day. After being found alone in the wilds of northern Kenya, Tali finally has the care and companionship he deserves. Rescued in February, he arrived at our Nairobi Nursery in a worrying state — gaunt, riddled with parasites, and incredibly weak. But elephants are creatures of family, and with specialist care and the presence of the other orphans, especially Mzinga and Nyambeni, we were able to bring him back from the brink. He used to squeak constantly for reassurance and comfort, but today - he's a teenager with a strut that is full of confidence! Why was he so small? Well Chamboi was rescued as a newborn in September 2023 – found alone by rangers near a waterhole in Tsavo West at barely a day old, his mother nowhere to be found. We brought him to Kaluku, so he could grow up and reintegrate back into the same ecosystem he was rescued from. He's still on that journey, growing up among orphaned elephants, Pips the giraffe and an assortment of other orphaned animals. But as black rhinos are want to be, Chamboi keeps to his own beat. He likes long walks, unhurried mud baths, a midday sleep, and afternoon play. Nearly always in that order. Around 6,788 black rhino remain in the wild, so every animal saved (and rewilded) counts. As black rhinos are wont to do, he runs a fairly strict routine: wake up, a breakfast of champions (lucerne pellets), mud bath, tour of his boma, nap time in the sun. And, on occasion, apples and bananas – which left him looking very blissed out. Maxwell is 24 years old, completely blind, and the sole permanent resident of the Nairobi Nursery – his condition means he wouldn't survive in the wild alone. He lives alongside the orphan elephants in the middle of Nairobi National Park, in his own enclosure surrounded by the sounds and smells of the forest – with occasional trunked visitors at his gate too! He's earned the treat, don't you think?

The Pella Collection has acquired 13 of Modest absolute iconic 1/1 works and two of his grail OTP editions all from the original minter, CryptoTaxGuy (who alongside sqda helped me discover Mod's works). I have been following m0dest for over a year now, and I consider him one of the brightest and most innovative lights in our space. His relentless melding of art and blockchain technology is second to none in my view. Thank you to CTG for passing on the baton and to Modest for his epic creations and his dedication to his craft. Our community is a richer place because of both of you🖤

In March 2012, a lone calf was spotted on Ol Malo Ranch, hiding in thick cover and bearing the trauma of a predator attack — most of his tail had already been bitten off. Samburu scouts kept careful watch for days, hoping his herd would return, but ultimately confirming he was an orphan, and in need of rescue. Now, Kanjoro lives wild in the vast Tsavo wilderness, free to roam as nature intended — but he still chooses to visit us now and then. These moments of connection remind us that while our goal is reintegration, the bonds forged between our Keepers and the elephants are ever lasting.
