Remember how we said that Daba has a cheeky side? Today, it was out in full display! While the rest of the Nursery herd quietly browsed, he decided to make his own entertainment and recruited Keeper Peter for a game of hide-and-seek. The little bull would burst out of the bush, brimming with bluster and ears flared for full effect. Once he was sure he’d been spotted, he would dance his way back into hiding, only to emerge from a new location moments later. These games speak volumes about an orphan’s healing and emotional state. As we always say, a playful elephant is a happy elephant! Little Daba is one of the newest members of our Nursery herd. Rescued in October, he is starting to find his feet among his new family. Lucky charms come in many forms. At the Nairobi Nursery, ours is an orphan elephant named Olomunyak. We rescued him in March 2024 after reports of a lone calf in the Maasai Mara. That he survived lions was a miracle. By June (here), the transformation was remarkable – weight returning, strength rebuilding, curiosity awakening. Now he's the one looking out for others. When Wamata had a fright, Olomunyak rushed to comfort her. He spends his days play-wrestling with Taroha, browsing alongside Mzinga and Arthi. The lucky one, indeed. His rescue was something of an endurance race – after his mother fell off a cliff and died, Tytan somehow survived, making his way down to her lifeless body. Then, he disappeared. Rangers, aircraft, even drones, went out in search of him, knowing that the seven-month-old would not survive long on his own. When Tytan arrived at the Nursery after his rescue, he was wild-eyed and wary. Our Keepers sat with him in shifts, day and night. It turns out scratches are the way in with a young black rhino – ours soon stopped flinching at the contact and started leaning into it. A herd of ex-orphans – elephants we'd raised and reintegrated – discovered the hairy newborn calf all alone in the bush. The 20-year-old Mujahid was the victim of a conspiracy between his acquaintance and doctors from the local medical college of Begrajpur in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. Mujahid, a resident of the village of Sanjak, claims that a man named Omprakash has been threatening and harassing him for the past two years. Then the Mujahid was told that he had health problems that required examination. Accompanied by Omprakash, he went to the hospital, where doctors allegedly, without his knowledge, anesthetized him and performed a sex reassignment operation. As a result, Mujahid lost his penis and testicles. "He brought me here, and the next morning I had an operation. When I regained consciousness, I was told that I had been turned from a boy into a girl," Mujahid recalls. Omprakash subsequently allegedly told the man that he would have to live with him now, as no one from his family or village would accept him anymore. Omprakash also threatened to kill Mujahid's father and take away his share of the family land. He said that he had hired a lawyer and now he would force her to marry him.

His mother was killed – likely defending him in a territorial fight – and he spent at least a day alone beside her before the Kenya Wildlife Service brought him in. He's a baby hippo. Hippos start their lives in water and learn to nurse beneath the surface, diving and resurfacing for breath between sips. Bumpy's bottle feeds are easier – no diving required. He installed two very large exhaust fans in the farm for proper air ventilation and to remove the heat. Because of this, the electricity bill for both his house and the dairy farm was very high every year, running into lakhs of rupees. A large portion of his income was being spent on electricity bills. One day, the man noticed that a very strong stream of air was coming out of the exhaust fans. Since both exhaust fans run all day, he realized he could use this airflow to generate electricity. He then installed two large wind turbines in front of the exhaust fans. The wind turbines spin at high speed all day using the strong air coming from the exhaust fans and generate about 30 units of electricity every day, around 900 units per month, and nearly 11,000 units per year. He uses this electricity to power his house, saving around ₹80,000 every year. Now he has to pay a much lower electricity bill. With his smart thinking, this man turned the waste air coming out of the two large exhaust fans into useful electricity by using two wind turbines, giving himself a significant financial benefit.

This is one of Tytan’s first moments at the Nursery – after his dramatic rescue following his mother's tragic cliff fall. Still rather wild-eyed, but slowly warming up – scratches are the way to a rhino’s heart! Day and night, someone sat vigil with him, until his nerves and suspicions had evaporated and turned into half-hearted snuffles and snorts. He's now the gentlest black rhino our Keepers have ever seen at his age. (Following his recovery, Tytan now spends most of his day exploring Nairobi National Park – his future home!)
