For the second consecutive year, winter sea ice in the Arctic reached a level that matches the lowest peak observed since satellite monitoring began in 1979. On March 15, Arctic sea ice extent reached 5.52 million square miles, NASA and National Snow and Ice Data Center report.

Antarctic sea ice extent is currently tracking the long-term average dating back to 1979. In fact, there is more sea ice around Antarctica today than there was 45 years ago in 1981. In the Arctic, the picture is also misrepresented. There has been no net trend in Arctic sea ice extent since Greta Thunberg was three years old. Season ups and downs play out, but there is no sustained decline. Taken together, total global sea ice extent right now is higher than it was in 2006. That was the year Al Gore predicted polar collapse and was awarded the Nobel Prize. This is not conjecture. It is what the satellite record shows.

Back in 2009, the newly appointed director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center, Mark Serreze, warned that Arctic sea ice was in a death spiral. He predicted the Arctic could be ice-free by the summer of 2030, likely even earlier. Nearly two decades later, the data tell a very different story. According to the NSIDC's own records, September sea ice has shown no downward trend since 2007 - 18 years of stability. Despite rising CO2 levels and every claimed feedback mechanism, the ice is not budging. It remains right where it was in the mid-2000s. As climate researcher Javier Vinos put it, "Clearly the models on which these predictions are based do not accurately reflect the actual climate." The Arctic death spiral never happened, yet Serreze remains director of the NSIDC. There is zero accountability.
