To study sea ice thickness, more than one view can help. NASA scientists spent two weeks flying above the Arctic with cutting-edge sensors aboard. When combined with satellite and on-the-ground measurements, the data helps us better understand how the region is changing.

This excerpt from the YOU:MATTER exhibit at the National Science and Media Museum shows how everything on the planet is connected — and how space technology is making those connections visible. Satellites track photosynthesis using the faint glow that plants emit — which helps us understand how well they’re absorbing carbon dioxide. Together with other data, like the Greenness Index, this gives scientists insight into global carbon cycles and the health of the planet. NASA, NOAA, JPL, and other agencies use these observations to better understand and care for the Earth.

The 2025 Arctic sea ice minimum stands at 4.6 million km2. That's 350,000 km2 more than 2024, and 180,000 above the 2011 to 2020 average. The claims of an ice-free Arctic have failed, yet again. In fact, no decline in sea ice has been observed in 18 years, longer if you take into account the artificial drop post-2007 which was due to a sensor and an algorithmic change. Mainstream scientists are of course dumbfounded by this pause. One paper (Swart 2015) claimed that an 18-year pause in melting was less than 10% likely. Experts underestimated the resilience of Arctic sea ice, assigning more than a 90% chance against what has actually happened. The ice is not disappearing. The models have been proven wrong.

With the Super El Nino upon us, the delayed Monsoon and the worried farmers, I went to one of the world's most advanced institutes of Oceanography- INCOIS -The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services situated at the edge of my Constituency. I spent more than 4 hours there, met some of the top scientists to understand the potential impact of the El Nino on us. 1/n

What’s going on here? 🤔 The poles are the only places ICESat-2 can’t gather data. Instead, the satellite’s orbit is designed so that it can better study the edges of the polar ice sheets and sea ice, where much of the change is happening.

A couple of weeks ago the NTSB issued an update on the UPS MD11 crash and I wanted to use the graphs of flight data in a visualization combined with the ADS-B data and surveilance videos. This is what I ended up with, one hard part about this is the flight is so close to the ground the viewpoint needs to account for the pitch of the aircraft raising and lowering the cockpit.
