For two hundred thousand years, intelligence has been the rarest resource on earth. Locked inside individual human minds. Non‑scalable. Scarce. Every advance in civilization — every leap in science, art, industry, and statecraft — flowed from that scarcity. Artificial intelligence breaks that pattern. It makes intelligence abundant. It makes...

The AI industry is optimizing for a definition of intelligence that does not exist. Andrew Ng just said it out loud. Ng: “AGI, to me, should be less about AI that already knows everything under the sun. That seems very challenging, doesn’t seem practical.” The human brain is not the most powerful economic asset in history because of what it holds. It is powerful because of what it can pick up. Ng: “The amazing thing about the human brain is its plasticity, or its ability to learn.” That same biological hardware that earns a PhD in quantum physics could have been trained on chess, surgery, or rewriting global supply chains from scratch. Ng: “That same human brain, just given different training, could have been a chess master, or could have been amazing at playing tennis.” General intelligence is not omniscience. It is the structural capacity to master whatever you point it at. Ng: “It is through learning that we then gain these incredibly specialized intelligences.” The winner is not whoever builds the biggest model. It is whoever builds the most adaptable one. The AI that walks into a domain it has never touched and executes before a human analyst finishes reading the brief. Ng: “What makes the human brain so valuable for economic tasks, is its ability to just learn to do whatever is needed.” Every corporation on earth pays for human labor because humans adapt. Not because they already know everything. AGI is the digitization of that exact capability. At machine speed. At infinite scale. Ng: “A lot of what makes the human brain so general is not that my brain or your brain already knows everything under the sun. It’s our ability to adapt, to learn a huge range of things.” The most powerful economic asset in history was never specialized knowledge. It was the raw capacity to acquire any knowledge, in any domain, on demand. The winning AI is not an encyclopedia. It is the force that makes encyclopedias irrelevant. And once that exists, the question stops being what the AI knows. It becomes what you can teach it before your competitor wakes up. Most people dominating this conversation have not understood that yet.

Jensen Huang just replaced the most important metric in global economics. Not trade volume. Not oil output. Not manufacturing. Compute. Huang: “Compute equals GDP. I know that for certain.” He did not say probably. He said certain. If your nation does not produce compute, it does not produce intelligence. If it does not produce intelligence, it does not produce revenue. Two links in the chain. Miss one and the whole thing breaks. Huang: “Not one country in the future will say, ‘Guess what, we’re gonna opt out on intelligence.’” Because opting out of compute is not a strategic decision. It is an extinction schedule. Every country that does not build its own inference capacity becomes a tenant in someone else’s infrastructure. Not an ally. Not a partner. A dependent. And dependents do not negotiate terms. They accept them. But this is not just a story about nations. Huang: “The entire software industry will be token-driven.” Every product. Every platform. Every service you touch. The entire business model of software is about to be measured in tokens consumed. Not seats sold. Not licenses renewed. Tokens burned. Software used to be a thing you bought. Now it is a thing that thinks. And thinking costs compute. Every query. Every action. Every decision the machine makes on your behalf. The meter is always running. Huang: “The entire internet industry could take 100% of their CapEx and make it AI because it’s better.” Not ten percent. Not a pilot program. One hundred percent. The moment any internet service rebuilds itself on generative intelligence, it outperforms every version that came before it. Search. Ads. Recommendation. Infrastructure. All of it. Better on contact. CapEx follows. All of it. Trillions moving in one direction with no offramp. The companies still budgeting AI as a line item are telling you exactly how much they understand. AI is not the line item. AI is the budget. The global economy is being re-denominated in a currency most people have not even heard of yet. Tokens. Whoever controls the supply of that currency is not playing in the new economy. They are the house. And the house does not lose.

Roger Penrose, Nobel Prize-winning physicist and mathematician, explains why we should stop calling it AI and start calling it "artificial cleverness": He believes the entire field is mislabelled, and the label itself is doing damage. His objection is simple but cuts deep: "The name is wrong. It's not artificial intelligence. It's not intelligence. Intelligence would involve consciousness. Well, if it's a machine, it's not conscious." For Penrose, people have confused raw computing power with genuine understanding. "People have lost the plot. They've lost it in the power of computing. The thing is that computers have got so powerful that they've lost the thread of what they're doing. But I think consciousness is something different. It's not computational." He believes the term itself has hypnotized people into a category error: "People are so hypnotized. The trouble is that AI is a bad term. It means artificial intelligence. Now intelligence in my view is conscious. That's what intelligence is about." So he proposes a rename. Artificial Cleverness. AC instead of AI. To illustrate the distinction, Penrose draws on his experience teaching mathematics: "You have mathematics students. Some of them understand what they're doing. Some are just clever. They can repeat what they've learned. They know how to do it very cleverly. They can calculate very well, but they don't necessarily understand what they're doing." That gap, between calculating well and actually understanding, is the gap Penrose sees between today's machines and genuine intelligence. Cleverness can be manufactured. Consciousness, in his view, cannot. So the question worth sitting with: when we call a system "intelligent," are we describing what it does, or quietly assuming something about what it is?

🧵19/34 The Strongest Force in the Universe --- Ok, So what if the AGI starts working towards something humans do not want to happen? You must understand: Intelligence is not about the nerdy professor, it’s not about the geeky academic bookworm type. Intelligence is the strongest force in the universe. It means being capable. It is sharp, brilliant and creative. It is strategic, manipulative and innovative. It understands deeply, exerts influence, persuades and leads. It is to know how to bend the world to your will. It is what turns a vision to reality, it is focus, commitment, willpower, having the resolve to never give up, overcoming all the obstacles and paving the way to the target. It is about searching deeply the space of possibilities and finding optimal solutions. Being intelligent simply means having what it takes to make it happen. There is always a path and a super-intelligence will always find it. Simple Fact --- So, we should start by stating the fact in a clear and unambiguous way: If you create something more intelligent than you that wants something else, then that something else is what is going to happen, even if you don’t want that something else to happen. Irrelevance of Sentience --- Keep in mind, the intelligence we are talking about is not about having feelings, or being self-aware and having qualia. Don’t fall into the trap of anthropomorphizing. Do not get stuck, looking for the Human type of Intelligence. Consciousness is not a requirement for the AGI at all. When we say the “AGI wants something X, or has the goal to do X”, what we mean is that this thing X is just one of the steps in a plan, generated by its model. A line in the output, a system like the Large Language Models produce when they receive a prompt. We don’t care if there is a Ghost in the machine, we don’t care if there is an actual soul that wants things hidden in the servers. We just observe the output which contains text descriptions of actions and goals and we leave the philosophy discussion for another day.

Mark Zuckerberg just described the obsolescence of every institution on Earth and delivered it like a product update. Zuckerberg: “I just think in the future almost everyone is gonna have the power of a 10,000-person organization.” He did not say better tools. He did not say smarter apps. He said the full cognitive output of ten thousand human beings. Packaged into a product. Handed to one person. That is not an upgrade. That is the end of the reason human beings organize at all. Companies exist because one brain is not enough. Governments exist because coordination requires hierarchy. Universities exist because knowledge demands infrastructure. Every institution ever built was a workaround for the same limitation. No single person could do it alone. Zuckerberg is telling you that limitation is about to disappear. The 500-person startup becomes one founder and an AI stack. The law firm becomes one attorney and a system that never sleeps. The hospital becomes one doctor carrying every specialist in their pocket. That is not speculation. That is a deployment schedule. And the man writing it runs a 70,000-person company. He employs 70,000 people and just told the world one person will soon need none of them. That is not a prediction. That is a confession from the man who will be first to act on it. But the part nobody is discussing matters more. This technology does not land on everyone equally. It lands first on the people who already command 10,000-person organizations. Zuckerberg does not get the power of 10,000 people. He already has that. He gets the power of 10,000 organizations. Every revolution in history was sold as liberation. The printing press was supposed to democratize knowledge. It built media empires. The internet was supposed to democratize commerce. It built trillion-dollar platforms. The tool always arrives as liberation. It always settles as leverage. And leverage always consolidates upward. Zuckerberg is not wrong about the capability. One person will do what ten thousand once did. But the question nobody is asking is the only one that matters. If everyone wields the output of 10,000 people, what is a single person actually worth? And then Zuckerberg answered his own question without realizing it. Zuckerberg: “If the intelligence of a 10,000-person company is not greater than the intelligence of a single person, then what are we doing here?” He meant it as a case for AI. That is the most brutal thing a CEO has ever said about the people who work for him.

Elon Musk just explained why the most important AI company on Earth might be a rocket company. The human brain is 2% of body mass. It burns 20% of the body’s total energy. Intelligence has always been an energy problem disguised as an information problem. The entire tech industry missed this. Musk: “Those who have lived in software land don’t realize that they’re about to have a hard lesson in hardware.” Every new model is hungrier than the last. Every training run devours more electricity than the one before. The grid was not built for this. Utility companies move at geological speed. Interconnection takes years. Permitting takes years. Construction takes years. AI moves in months. Musk: “You’re going to hit the wall big time on power generation. They already are.” The obvious answer is private power plants next to data centers. Musk: “Where do you get the power plants? Where do you get the power plants from?” You cannot will a turbine into existence with venture capital. Every atom on Earth is bound by friction, gravity, and regulation. Most people stare at this wall and see the ceiling on intelligence. They are looking in the wrong direction. In orbit there is no night. No clouds. No seasons. No permitting. No grid. Unfiltered solar energy feeding silicon every hour of every day. Musk: “It’s 10 times cheaper because you don’t need any batteries.” That single number rewrites the entire economics of intelligence. Musk: “The moment your cost of access to space becomes low, by far the cheapest and most scalable way to generate tokens is space.” SpaceX is not a rocket company. It is quietly becoming the most important energy infrastructure play on the planet. Starship is not about Mars. It is about making orbit so cheap that building on the ground becomes the irrational choice. Every major leap in intelligence followed the same pattern. Not a smarter algorithm. A bigger energy source. Fire grew the human brain. Fossil fuels built the computer. The next source isn’t on this planet. The ceiling on intelligence was never artificial. It was always gravitational. The future will not be decided by who builds the best model. It will be decided by who builds the cheapest rocket.

🧵18/34 Discontinuities on our planet (Mountains changing shape) --- In fact, talking about AGI like if it’s another technology is really confusing people. People talk about it as if it is ‘The next big thing” that will transform our lives, like the invention of the smartphone or the internet. This framing couldn’t be more wrong, it puts AGI into a wrong category. It brings to mind cool futuristic pictures with awesome gadgets and robotic friends. AGI is not like any transformative technology that has ever happened with humanity so far. The change it will bring is not like that of the invention of the internet. It is not even comparable to the invention of electricity or even to the first time humans learned to use fire. Natural Selection Discontinuity --- The correct way to categorise AGI is the type of discontinuity that happened to Earth when the first lifeforms appeared and the intelligent dynamic of natural selection got a foothold. Before that event, the planet was basically a bunch of elements and physical processes dancing randomly to the tune of the basic laws of nature. After life came to the picture, complex replicating structures filled the surface and changed it radically. Human Intelligence Discontinuity --- A second example is when human intelligence was added to the mix. Before that, the earth was vibrant with life but the effects and impact of it were stable and limited. After human intelligence, you suddenly have huge artificial structures lit at night like towns, huge vessels moving everywhere like massive ships and airplanes, life escaping gravity and reaching out to the universe with spaceships and unimaginable power to destroy everything with things like nuclear bombs. AGI Discontinuity --- AGI is another such phenomenon. The transformation it will bring is in the same category as those 2 events in the history of the planet. What you will suddenly see on earth after this third discontinuity, no-one knows. But it’s not going to look like the next smartphone. It is going to look more like mountains changing shape ! To compare it to technology (any technology ever invented by humanity) is seriously misleading.

Intelligence was the one thing that never scaled. We scaled everything else. Steel. Energy. Compute. The one resource that built all of it never left the skull. Musk: “People thought defeating Go was either never or 20 years away.” Twelve months later it was over. Musk: “Now that same AlphaGo system can defeat the top 50 players simultaneously with 0% chance of them winning. And that’s one year later.” Fifty lifetimes of mastery against a system that does not know it is playing a game. Zero percent chance. That was not a competition. That was a preview. Musk: “The degrees of freedom to which artificial intelligence is able to apply itself are really increasing by 10 orders of magnitude a year.” Ten billion times. Every twelve months. No brain alive can visualize that number. By design. Every hard problem that ever defeated us did it for the same reason. Not complexity. Scarcity. The only mind capable of solving it was biological and there was never enough of it. Cancer. Fusion. Climate. The physics we cannot even see yet. Not waiting on more data. Waiting on something that can think at a scale biology never allowed. That just arrived. Most people hear this and reduce it to a question about their paycheck. They are watching the single largest expansion of capability in the history of life on this planet and worrying about a job title. For ten thousand years intelligence had one speed. One brain. One lifetime. Every civilization on earth throttled by the same biological ceiling. That ceiling just shattered. We are the only species that ever hit its own limit and built what breaks through it. That is not an ending. That is the point of everything we ever built.
