For years as a tour guide, I had a love-hate relationship with sleeping on the Rhine—great towns…but hotels over-looking the train tracks with trains rampaging through all night long. But now it’s four panes of modern glass and when a train screams by…you hear nothing.

First thing I noticed when I checked into my hotel in Lisbon... I thought, "Oh great, there goes any possibility of a good night's sleep!" But it was fine- great sound insulating windows. Which coild be opened- as opposed to American hotels.

We discovered this last year in Germany. Got a hotel room near the train station to catch an early train to the airport, and anticipated lots of noise. No need to worry. Our suite at the Hilton Garden Inn overlooking Mannheim Hbf was utterly silent.

Good tip. Something one should think about.

what can save you from the noise of the tweenagers at the hostel up hillside? That's where we stayed in Bacharach and I got no sleep, but maybe that was more due to FIL's snoring 😂(he picked the place, for the last time)
