I was really impressed by the UMI gripper (Cheng Chi et al.), but a key limitation is that **force-related data wasn’t captured**: humans feel haptic feedback through the mechanical springs, but the robot couldn’t leverage that info, limiting the data’s value for fine-grained manipulation tasks. Led by my amazing students Yolanda Zhu and Binghao Huang, we designed a **portable visuo-tactile gripper** by integrating our dense, flexible tactile arrays with the UMI gripper to enable large-scale in-the-wild data collection. 🔗 We demonstrate **cross-modal representation learning** and **downstream policy learning** on tasks requiring in-hand state estimation (e.g., test tube reorientation) and fine-grained force sensing (e.g., pipette fluid transfer). A policy that teaches robot hands to touch things the way humans do... not just grab and move, but feel and adjust in real time. Robot manipulation research often stops at picking up objects and placing them. CGP goes further: it handles tasks like opening jars, flipping objects in-hand, wiping dishes, and grasping fragile eggs, the kind of dexterous, contact-rich skills that require constant micro-adjustments based on what the fingers are actually feeling. The robot doesn't just see what it's doing; it predicts what contact should feel like at each step, then checks whether reality matches the prediction. If a finger is slipping, the policy knows before the object drops. The robot keeps flipping a box correctly even when the camera view is disrupted, because it's grounding decisions in touch, not just vision. 🚨 BREAKING: Microsoft's first robotics foundation model! 🤯 Microsoft just announced Rho-alpha (ρα), their first robotics model derived from the Phi series of vision-language models. Rho-alpha translates natural language commands into control signals for robotic systems performing bimanual manipulation tasks. Commands like "push the green button with the right gripper," "pull out the red wire," "flip the top switch on," or "turn the knob to position 5" get executed directly by dual-arm robots. What makes this different from standard vision-language-action (VLA) models is the additional modalities. Rho-alpha is a VLA+ model that adds tactile sensing to the perceptual mix, with plans to incorporate force feedback. On the learning side, the model is designed to continually improve during deployment by learning from human feedback. The training approach combines trajectories from physical demonstrations and simulated tasks with web-scale visual question answering data. Since teleoperation data is scarce and expensive, Microsoft is using NVIDIA Isaac Sim on Azure to generate physically accurate synthetic datasets via reinforcement learning. These simulated trajectories get combined with commercial and open physical demonstration datasets. The model is currently under evaluation on dual-arm setups and humanoid robots. Microsoft is opening an Early Access Program for organizations interested in evaluating Rho-alpha. I tell people that one group is like the king kongs, the kings of the jungle while another group is like chimpanzees, basically baby monkeys. Which show do you think this story belongs to? 🌞: Alright, I’ll tell you. This story is about the "Bump Boom Boom" gang show. In the industry, they call it "M3" for short. When they work, they refer to this song as M3. The first time this group gathered to rehearse, Sea was the only one missing because he was off practicing his "star-climbing" or "hanging-from-a-star" routine at the time. So back then, it was just Force, Book, Ju, Mark, and Jimmy. On the very first day of learning the choreography, they blasted the music so loud that the bass from Bump Boom Boom made your heart stop like, how can anyone survive this sound? 🌞: We were learning the choreography, and on day one, Jimmy was really quick on his feet. He remembered the moves perfectly. But because he's so smart and his brain processes a lot of data, whenever too much information gets crammed in, he blanks out. He has to come back, review it, and then he remembers it forever. 🌞: But there was this one person... from the very first day of rehearsal all the way until the day we were about to hit the stage, he was still dancing off-beat. We believe we’re the first robotics company to demonstrate a robot peeling an apple with dual dexterous human-like hands. China’s pretty humanoid robot stuns by opening a car door in a ‘world’s first’ | Jijo Malayil, Interesting Engineering Mornine used onboard sensors and full-body control to locate the handle, adjust posture, and open a car door—no human input needed. AiMOGA Robotics has claimed to have reached a significant milestone in embodied AI with its humanoid robot, Mornine, autonomously opening a car door inside a functioning Chery dealership in China. Relying solely on onboard sensors, full-body motion control, and end-to-end reinforcement learning, Mornine performed the task without any human input. This was the dream of Thomas Townsend Brown – one that got stifled and suppressed behind the veil of secrecy and subcompartments. The common trope from experiments around the world are high electric field differentials seem to result in thrust. Buhler’s experiment exists in this lineage. 6. The Patent Office is Running the Peer Review Buhler made a deliberate choice not to pursue academic peer review as a primary path. His second patent is currently under examination, and the examiner's office has been reaching out to independent witnesses who have signed affidavits confirming they have seen and reproduced the effect. A helicopter launched from Patrick Air Force Base, flew to the location, hovered briefly, and returned to base without intervening. The light did not stop. It began moving toward them. At some point it split from one light into six rotating orange-pink lights that went under the water and re-emerged in a repeating cycle. The lights tracked their movement along the beach for forty minutes, closing to within roughly fifty yards before disappearing. Buhler says similar lights have been reported by others in the same area, and Stephen Greer runs group observation sessions approximately forty minutes south of the same beach. 10. The Force Crosses the Unity Threshold for Space Already The current demonstrated force is in the five to ten millinewton range. For Earth launch, that is not yet sufficient, and Buhler does not claim otherwise. For orbital station-keeping, for preventing satellite orbital decay, for repositioning between orbits in microgravity, the force exceeds what is needed. Buhler calls this hitting unity for space, moon, and Mars applications without any major development beyond what has already been demonstrated. The self-launcher, a device capable of lifting itself from Earth's surface, is the declared goal. No blueprints exist yet for the energy requirements. But the force is real, it is directional, it reverses on command, and it does not require continuous power to sustain. Why This Matters NASA's lead electrostatics scientist ran nearly 2,000 controlled experiments, eliminated every prosaic explanation the field has available, documented a thrust that persists after the power is cut, watched the fine structure constant emerge from the data repeatedly, and submitted a second patent currently under formal examination. A QED theorist with no commercial stake in the outcome reviewed the experimental claims and could not find a conventional explanation. In the spring of 2022, former President Barack Obama gave a major policy addressat Stanford University’s Cyber Policy Center, where he laid out a sweeping proposal for government censorship of social media platforms through the Platform Accountability and Transparency Act. Six days later, President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security announced that it had created a “Disinformation Governance Board” to serve as an Orwellian Ministry of Truth with the clear goal of controlling the information Americans could access online. At the heart of Obama’s vision for Internet censorship was legislation that would have authorized the US government’s National Science Foundation to authorize and fund supposedly independent NGOs to censor the Internet. The DHS and Stanford Internet Observatory, which was part of the Stanford Cyber Policy Center, pioneered this censorship-by-proxy strategy as a way to get around the First Amendment in 2020 with posts raising concerns about the 2020 elections and in 2021 with “narratives” expressing concern about the Covid vaccine. The 2024 election of President Donald Trump significantly reduced the threat of Obama, DHS, and NSF censoring the American people. Trump defunded much of the Censorship Industrial Complex. The Platform Accountability Act is going nowhere in Congress. Elon Musk fired most of the censorship staff at Twitter and has allowed a significantly wider range of speech on the platform. And even before Trump’s election, Stanford donor Frank McCourt stopped funding the Stanford Internet Observatory after Public, Racket News, and House Weaponization Subcommittee Chairman Jim Jordan exposed its central role in the DHS censorship-by-proxy scheme. But now, foreign governments, including Europe, the UK, Brazil, Australia, and others are demanding censorship, including of the American people. The risk is that US tech companies will find it significantly less expensive to have a single global censorship regime and just go along with foreign censorship requests. Facebook complied with Biden administration demands to censor because it needed Biden’s help in dealing with European censorship officials. And the Brazilian government forced Elon Musk to continue censoring the Brazilian people after it froze Starlink’s assets. And Public has discovered that the Stanford Cyber Policy Center, which is led by Obama’s former ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, is at the heart of a new, secretive, and possibly illegal censorship initiative that appears even more ambitious than the one Obama proposed in 2022. On September 24, the Cyber Policy Center hosted a secret dinner between its leaders and top censorship officials from Europe, UK, Brazil, California and Australia. The meeting was titled “Compliance and Enforcement in a Rapidly Evolving Landscape.” Frank McCourt, the same person behind the Stanford Internet Observatory, financed the gathering through his “Project Liberty Institute,” (PLI), toward which he gave $500 million to “strengthen democracy” and “foster responsible technology.” Public emailed all 21 participants and organizers and only heard from four, PLI, the Australian government, the UK government, and the European Union, which declined to comment because, even though Public gave it over 24 hours, a spokesperson said, “We would need several days.” The UK government said, “The legal framework gives Ofcom power to enforce the duties in the Act which are related to securing protections for people in the UK; it does not give Ofcom powers to enforce under any other legal regimes…. Ofcom has always engaged with various international forums and networks across all of the sectors we regulate, including online safety, spectrum, telecommunications, post, and broadcast and media. Regulators around the world regularly exchange insights, experience, and best practice.” A spokesperson for PLI said it “has made unrestricted gifts to several academic research programs, including Stanford University” and that “PLI does not receive funding from governments, intergovernmental organizations, or large technology companies.” But PLI’s own policy “blueprint” reveals that it is demanding a single total global censorship regime and intends to use the EU’s market power, known as the “Brussels effect,” to force big tech companies to comply. The blueprint calls for governments to “Recommit to a Single, Global Internet,” with “regulatory interoperability and oversight, to achieve a single unified market” and use the large size of the EU market to “drive bilateral and multilateral agendas to formally enshrine reciprocal guarantees.” A spokesperson for the Australian government said, “Whilst in attendance at Stanford for the 2-day conference, some attendees, including trust and safety researchers, industry, civil society, and government representatives, were also invited to attend an informal evening roundtable event organised by Stanford University entitled, ‘Compliance and Enforcement in a Rapidly Evolving Landscape.’ This roundtable did not involve any discussion of compliance coordination or regulatory information sharing.” The Australian spokesperson claimed that “eSafety has no role in regulating hate speech or disinformation. eSafety has no remit or interest in regulating the affairs of other nations, nor does it have any role in diplomatic, trade or other government-to-government relations.” But it also said, “As the internet is global and functions irrespective of national borders, by necessity eSafety collaborates with law enforcement, other government agencies, and non-government partners around the world, including in the United States.” The leaked agenda’s stated purpose was to “discuss the state of compliance and enforcement” in order to “identify where data, research, and expertise can enable more effective compliance with and enforcement of existing policy.” Much of the following two days of the public conference were focused on coordinating government censorship (“regulation”) of social media platforms, and the other nations that attended the meeting are all intensively involved in censoring their citizens and US tech companies. And, the head of Australia’s eSafety, Julie Inman-Grant, who was a keynote speaker at Stanford’s foreign censorship meeting, is also the head of a global government censorship network that serves as forum, she told the World Economic Forum, “to help us coordinate, build capacity and do just that…. We use the tools that we have, and can be effective, but we know we’re going to be, go, much further, when we work together with other like-minded independent statutory authorities around the globe.” As such, the people who are demanding censorship are once again spreading disinformation about what they are doing. All of this is happening in a context of global censorship intensifying. The UK government arrests 30 people per day for “offensive” social media posts, is attempting to censor 4Chan, which has no servers in the UK, and will mandate digital IDs for employment, which may give unprecedented control to politicians and bureaucrats to censor. Analyzing Episode 44. Season 2 aka Choice vs Force, and the Repeating Patterns of Oppression When it comes to injustice and oppression in human societies, I find there are three kinds of people. Some are silent watchers, others are enablers, and then there are those who resist. Resistance matters because silence makes room for oppression to grow, and enabling oppression feeds it, until it morphs into a tyrannical beast. But resistance? That's a disrupting force. It reminds systems built on cruelty that human power is never absolute and that fear is never forever. It reminds us that injustice can only survive as long as it goes unchallenged. Even where resistance doesn't bear immediate fruit, it redraws the moral line and allows the victims to be seen. It tells the oppressors their evil is being recorded. Societies don't change because everyone always agrees on something. They change because of a few who refuse to comply with the decrepit patterns of abuse. But what does any of this have to do with episode 44? Well, let's see. We have two stories running parallel in the episode - that of Alya and Cihan, and Kaya and Zerrin. What's common in both tales? Quite a few things, but most importantly, for me, it's how the male-dominated structure of Mardin wants to force two women to live their lives according to what the system dictates is right, rather than what they want themselves. Both Demir and Boran refuse to give up, despite knowing full well that Zerrin and Alya love someone else. And, I refuse to legitimize their behavior built on past traumas, because hey, life ain't easy for anyone. But that doesn't give us a pass to behave like monsters. This entire episode, to me, seems like a tussle between choice and force. The old guard of Mardin, used to issuing orders and having them followed in silence, coming face to face with resistance. With the will to live life on one's own terms. Almost like the writer is trying to say, 'see this shit will just keep going until someone screams enough and fights back.' Let's start with the beginning of the episode. Demir abducts Zerrin and lies about her baby dying so he can later use the same child to blackmail Zerrin into staying with him. Why? Because the psychopath can't see beyond his own wants. Zerrin's choices don't register because to him, she's not a person, just someone to be managed and controlled. So, force becomes his default setting; he lies, emotionally terrorizes, manipulates, does everything to get his own way. And, in this way, he embodies what the episode keeps repeating, that oppression doesn't always have to be violent. Sometimes, it's your refusal to acknowledge someone else's right to choose. There's another scene that stands out to me in this context, where Cihan and Alya are having a conversation, far from the cray cray crowd. In that scene, you get to see what life can be like when two people see each other as equals and choose to work together. When Alya tells Cihan of her fears about Deniz, he doesn't brush them off. He acknowledges them. But then, he also reminds her that she's always been able to get through to her son, and that there's no way Deniz will choose Boran after she informs him of the whole story. What makes CihAl so attractive as a couple is their ability to see each other and acknowledge their humanity and individuality. There's no force here. They stay together because they want to, they choose to. Many people choose to part despite the presence of love, so feelings here take a back seat. It's about free will. Agency. That's the most fundamental human instinct. When you take that away from someone, it's almost like taking away their humanity. Now, I know some of y'all saw the episode and thought Deniz is gonna fall prey to Boran's manipulation. But that's not what I see. When Boran is trying to rip apart CihAl's family portrait, Deniz becomes the reason he can't. And sure, Boran does manage to sway Deniz close to him a time or two, but there are scenes where you can see Deniz pulling back. Like when he realizes Boran really isn't paying any attention to him in the room. And Deniz is Alya's son, too. Which means if there's something he wants, he's going to go after it all out. You can see that in the way he refuses to stop calling Cihan 'Baba' even though Boran tries his level best. Now, let's turn back the dial a little and think about the other message Guilzar let slip in the episode. When Ummu and Ihityar are talking about how Alya is being manipulated by Boran using Deniz, and there's nothing to be done about it, Kadir speaks up. In that scene, to me, Kadir is the writer, telling the audience that the weaponization of a child against a parent isn't acceptable. That the parents, in this case, Alya and Cihan, have feelings too. They've been through hell and were rewarded with true love. And they deserve to live that love. When Kadir says love like that is worth dying for, it seemed to drive home the point that you don't give up when you love like Alya and Cihan love each other. You certainly don't allow yourself to be boxed in a corner because of the love of your child. Because that, too, is a form of coercion. I'm not going to talk a lot about Boran and his tantrums because to me, he and Demir were mirror images in this episode. The ugly face of abuse weaponized as 'love.' And Sadakat? She's the worst kind of enabler there is. She keeps going, Alya, singling her out, simply because she thinks Alya is the weakest link. Since Sadakat can't stand to see her family break apart, she's only too willing to homage to the age-old custom of male compulsion by helping her pislik of a first-born. Ugh. Anyway, going back to the message of this episode - patterns of oppression on repeat? It kind of makes me glad that both Boran and Demir are going to step out of bounds to do something really fcuking stupid. Because their desperation will force a reckoning that's been a long time coming. In this phase, the IDF would withdraw from all of Gaza, until the last centimetre, while all the dead hostages remain in Gaza. It’s as different as day and night. Here, everyone is returning, including the dead, and the IDF is still in half of Gaza. This isn’t just about some desire to maintain an occupation or garrison force, but rather to ensure that Hamas disarms — something that didn’t happen in the Biden proposal. So now let’s move on to the Witkoff plan, much closer to us, much better for Israel, but still different.
