Forty-nine years ago, NASA launched a message into the deep unknown that is still traveling further away from us every single second. Attached to both Voyager spacecraft is a gold-plated copper record acting as a time capsule from Earth. It was designed to tell the story of our world... to any extraterrestrial life that might find it millions of years from now. The contents are incredibly diverse, featuring greetings in 55 different languages and a 90-minute selection of music ranging from the classical genius of Bach to the rock and roll energy of Chuck Berry. The record also contains sounds of wind, thunder, and animal calls, along with 116 images encoded in analog form. Perhaps the most intimate detail is the recorded brainwaves of a young woman who was thinking about the history of ideas and the experience of falling in love. Today, the Voyager probes are more than 15 billion miles away from Earth, officially in interstellar space. Watching the bands today of the apprentice boys in Ballymoney was incredibly moving, every beat of the drum carried pride, passion, and a deep sense of loyalty. My answer: Why do these robots have human parts that portray typical male and female forms? This is going to be a very hard for me to answer, but I think it’s important to understand. The most powerful urge in humanity is the mating ritual. Males and females do extraordinary, impossible tasks to complete the circle of furthering life. I was listening to a sermon recently from one of my favorite teachers, Tim Keller, who sadly passed from this earth earlier this year. He was talking about the power and meaning of the words “Peace On Earth”. I was deeply encouraged and challenged to consider the significance of those words, particularly what they meant when announced by the angels 2000 years ago, and what they mean to us in 2023. As I was reflecting on all of that in light of what’s happening in my life personally with family and friends as well as in the world as a whole, I started thinking about a song I wrote a few years ago with my friend Tom Douglas called “A Desperate Benediction (Peace on Earth)” and suddenly found myself rewriting some of the words of this song, specifically related to right now...Christmas 2023. I’m not even sure as a songwriter what the rules are on this kind of a thing, but I felt strongly that I wanted to share it with you…So here you go. Peace on Earth, Christmas 2023.
