It was really interesting to learn that The Prince was not unique for its time for being a book written for only a single person to ever read. Before the printing press, books were expensive and cumbersome to copy. And even after printing was established, elites often wanted proprietary insights. So they’d pay someone to write a book just for them, or just for their kids. Some of these books have survived, like The Prince. But maybe most of them are lost. The funny thing is that maybe the era when books were mostly written to be published widely was the exception, and we’re returning to the Renaissance standard. Already most of the words I read in a given day are written just for me by AI. As AIs get to human level and beyond, we might be back with masterpieces that are only ever read by one or two people.

I celebrated the anniversary of “Music Box of Fate” today with RiKU, Lesage, and Baji. In the process of reminiscing about the song and talking about my approach to orchestrating, I… discovered that I regained the ability to hear music in my mind, which I’d lost after my near-death experience. It was so loud, clear, and vivid. I feel alive again. I’m so so so lucky to be here, to have the friends I have, to have made such a special song with Mousey and RiKU, and to have been given a second chance at life. This song gave me everything not once, but twice 💖 and I think it will continue to do so for the rest of my life. Happy anniversary to “Music Box of Fate”! ✨

RIP to Brian Wilson. The Beach Boys legend died at 82. Paul McCartney has said “God Only Knows” is the greatest song ever written and one of the few to bring him to tears. In 2000, McCartney inducted Wilson into the Songwriters Hall of Fame with a heartfelt speech: “He wrote some music that when I played it, it made me cry and I don't quite know why. It wasn't necessarily the words or the music. There was just something so deep in it. There's only certain pieces of music that can do this to me and just reach it right down in me. I think it's a sign of great genius to be able to do that with a bunch of words and a bunch of notes. This man deserves to be in the Hall of Fame that's for sure. It reminds me of how kwaito musicians forged powerful and diverse cultural identities, even while facing systemic barriers in the music industry and a social climate that wasn’t always receptive to the “new wave.”

Here is something soothing to calm you down after my rant on Congress. It’s the ritornello theme from Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #4 - my favorite because it’s heavy on the winds. In a ritornello movement, you have one basic theme, with departures and variations and returns to the principal theme. This makes it easy to follow - one of the reasons baroque era music never loses popularity. You don’t lose your way because the theme brings you home. It’s complex and beautiful without requiring all that much from a listener who isn’t educated in music.

This version of “FIX YOU” was years in the making. I waited until I had the right people and the right setting to really honor the song. Stanaj and Staarz brought so much emotion to their performances, bringing this vision to life in the most beautiful way. Then getting to film it LIVE with a 50-piece orchestra and a 100-person choir was honestly one of the most meaningful moments of my career. And to top it all off… getting to release it on the exact 20th Anniversary of the original song by Coldplay (from their X&Y album) is such a cool full-circle moment. This is our tribute to them.
