Then we did some rehearsals, but I was wary because the entire movie is a dialectic that works backward from its last moment... Both men recognize that their next encounter will mean certain death for one of them. Gaining an edge is why they've chosen to meet. So we read the scene a number of times before shooting—not a lot—just looking at it on the page. I didn't want it memorized. My goal was to get them past the unfamiliarity of it. But of course these two already knew it impeccably. We shot that scene with three cameras, two over-the-shoulders and one profile shot, but I found when editing that every time we cut to the profile, the scene lost its one-on-one intensity. I'll often work with multiple cameras, if they're needed. It doesn't matter if it's two people in a room or two opposing forces taking over a street. Action comes from drama, and drama is conflict: What's the conflict?"

Today is the 50th anniversary of “Jaws”. Steven Spielberg’s film made the summer blockbuster and was a masterclass in creating suspense in a monster thriller. We don’t see the shark until 81st minute of the 124-minute film (65% way in). It was a stroke of luck: the original script had a lot more shark in it but Spielberg’s shark animatronic kept breaking down. The electric wiring shortcircuited in the ocean saltwater off of Martha’s Vineyard. So, Spielberg found other ways to “show” the shark (filming from POV of shark in water or people’s terrified reactions). As the saying goes, “constraints breed creativity”. In a 60 Minutes interview, Spielberg explained how the failed animatronic made the film better: ▫️ “I decided to shoot without the shark and it increased, or torqued up the suspense of the movie because you really didn’t know where it would come from next. So, rather than seeing the shark in every scene, I played a lot of the fear from the people in the water. From seeing their legs kicking. From the POV of the camera moving along the surface of the water. That turned the movie into more of an exercise in suspense than just a horror film [With a working shark], I probably wouldn’t have had a movie as successful.” ▫️ The 1975 film made $470m on a $9m budget and became top-grossing film ever (before “Star Wars” knocked it off in 1977). Spielberg did the exact same playbook with the T-Rex in 1993’s “Jurassic Park”: we don’t see the apex dinosaurs until the 63rd minute of the 127-minute film (50% way in). This also became the top-grossing film ever at the time (~$1B box office). Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 built the same scroll-animated website from 1 skill in 32 minutes and only 1 of them made it feel like a film. Same prompt: boutique Japan travel brand, origami style. A subway pulls in, a paper house unfolds into a hotel, a bird takes flight as you scroll. Doing this by hand is brutal multiple videos, matched starting frames, frames ripped out 1 by 1 and synced to scroll position. The skill does all of it: Generate 1 anchor image and approve it every scene inherits the style Turn it into video through the Higgs Field MCP (Seedance), straight from the terminal FFmpeg pulls every frame Each frame maps to scroll position, so your scrollbar becomes the playhead Setup is just connecting the MCP and loading the skill works in Claude Code and Codex. It interviews you first about scenes, budget and mobile, then shows the anchor image before burning a single credit on video. Budget reality: 6 scenes runs ~800 credits and is overkill, 4 scenes is the sweet spot, crop-safe mobile is the cheap path. The verdict came down to transitions. GPT-5.6 Soul built strong scenes with incredible detail inside each one then hard cuts between scene 1 and 2, and again between 2 and 3. Fable 5 stitched them together: wires push out of the top of frame while the next scene blurs in behind, gains depth and locks into place. Same skill, same prompts, 10 generations each. The #PowerRangersPreservationProject Presents LOST Lost Galaxy: Erin Simms as Maya Part 2! Shot on the same day as Maya’s recovered morphed scene onboard the Astro Megaship we debuted last year, this scene begins at the beginning of Episode 3 — as Maya navigates unseen corridors of Terra Venture to access the Astro Megaship after hearing the call of the Galactabeasts. Slightly extended from the final scene featuring Cerina Vincent, this version has a number of differences. Erin Simms once again appears as the originally cast Maya, this time revealing Maya’s original costume! Rather than modernizing her look from Mirinoi as we saw in the aired series, this version of Maya customized a beige Terra Venture jumpsuit instead — presumably in a bid to better fit in on her new-found home, tearing off her now-frayed sleeves to make it her own. She is also shown to have a more difficult time acclimating to technology than her final on-screen iteration. Also getting to flex a different take on his character is Reggie Rolle, who plays Damon a little more loosely and laid back than in the reshoot — spinning in sync to his comment about having him “around.” Damon’s jumpsuit has added the abstract Terra Venture badge to the left chest, consistent with the rest of his team in this scene — each with a solid bar matching their Ranger color [including Maya]. Shot on the same day as Maya’s recovered morphed scene onboard the Astro Megaship we debuted last year, this scene begins at the beginning of Episode 3 — as Maya navigates unseen corridors of Terra Venture to access the Astro Megaship after hearing the call of the Galactabeasts. Slightly extended from the final scene featuring Cerina Vincent, this version has a number of differences. Erin Simms once again appears as the originally cast Maya, this time revealing Maya’s original costume! Rather than modernizing her look from Mirinoi as we saw in the aired series, this version of Maya customized a beige Terra Venture jumpsuit instead — presumably in a bid to better fit in on her new-found home, tearing off her now-frayed sleeves to make it her own. She is also shown to have a more difficult time acclimating to technology than her final on-screen iteration. Also getting to flex a different take on his character is Reggie Rolle, who plays Damon a little more loosely and laid back than in the reshoot — spinning in sync to his comment about having him “around.” Damon’s jumpsuit has added the abstract Terra Venture badge to the left chest, consistent with the rest of his team in this scene — each with a solid bar matching their Ranger color [including Maya]. STAR WARS hit screens on this day in 1977. It was one of the first films I saw in the theater. Because it was in theaters for over a year (like RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK would be four years later), I can’t be sure if I saw it in 1977 or 1978, but I do know that I was very young. I remember going with my mom, that it was a matinee, and that we sat in the middle. The seats stand out to me because I remember I had to use the restroom in the middle of the climactic battle scene :) I’d see it multiple times in the theater over its run and would see THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI on their opening weekends. And yes, I remember the marketing for the third film when it was called REVENGE OF THE JEDI. If you did not live through it, it is hard to describe the STAR WARS mania that gripped the country in 1977 and lasted through RETURN OF THE JEDI in 1983. From lines at the theaters to toys to costumes to books to the infamous 1978 STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL, it was an amazing time to be a kid and witness the magic of the movies firsthand through a phenomenon you knew was something extremely special. I can’t be 100% sure that STAR WARS was my first movie in the theater, as during that timeframe I also saw WATERSHIP DOWN (traumatic) and THE RESCUERS (dark) as a double feature with my dad (we had to travel to a city and I found a 9mm bullet in the street – a bullet I still have today), CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND with my grandmother (where I tripped running to the theater with a bowl of popcorn that was almost bigger than I was and spilling it all over the hallway - and I remember how nice the guy was behind the counter who gave us another one for free), and a double feature of ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN and THE BLACK HOLE, but in looking at the dates of those two films I think it was after STAR WARS and that the theater paired an older film (ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN – 1975) with a new film (THE BLACK HOLE – 1979). I just watched the original three films with my youngest son, and it brings me right back…probably the closest I can get to a time machine.

The original choice for the role of 'Lisa' in John Hughes's "Weird Science" (1985) was then unknown Robin Wright. But John Hughes lost her when her agent got her a role in the TV Show, "Santa Barbara". About Wright, casting director Jackie Burch said, "“She was not voluptuous but still hot for young boys" Kelly Emberg, a model and cover girl was cast in the part. But the problem with her was that she couldn't act. Hughes asked Burch to find someone who was “gorgeous and can act.” She found Kelly LeBrock. According to Kelly LeBrock, she turned down the role when it was offered to her first because she was having way too much fun in the South of France with Sting and she didn't want to go to the USA. She got on the flight to Chicago the very next day. About her experience during the early days of filming, LeBrock said, "My first scene was the shower scene, and I was forced to wear the previous actress’s wardrobe. She was a completely different body type than I was so a lot of the outfits had to be modified for them to work. Also they were three weeks into production and already knew each other, and I am the new person on set. Plus it was only my second movie, so it was very stressful for me." Alec Guinness on how he nearly turned down Star Wars: When asked how he came to be involved in a science fiction film, Guinness revealed his first reaction was far from enthusiastic. "A script arrived on my dressing table. And it seemed to me the dialogue was pretty ropey. Uh, but I had to go on turning the page and I mean that's an essential in any script. You've got to know what happens next or what's going to be said next." He eventually met Lucas, they got on well, and he signed on. Then came the contract negotiation that would become legendary. Guinness had never taken a percentage on a film before because, in his words, films "lose money like mad" when he takes a percentage. His agent suggested 2%. He agreed, expecting nothing. The day before Star Wars opened in San Francisco, Lucas called him personally: "He said, 'I think the movie is kind of going to be all right.' I said, 'I'm glad, George.' He said, 'Yeah, the press quite like it.' I said, 'Good.' He said, 'We're pleased with, you know, very grateful for little alterations you suggested, and so we'd like to offer you another half percent.'" Guinness thought he had 2.5%. But when he later asked the producer to put the offer in writing, he discovered the half-percent had quietly become a quarter-percent. He ended up with 2.25%. On why he thinks the film connected so deeply with audiences, Guinness offered a simple diagnosis: "A marvelous healthy innocence. Great pace, wonderful to look at, full of guts, nothing unpleasant. I mean, people go bang bang and people fall over and are dead. But, you know, no horrors, no sleazy sex… a sort of wonderful freshness about it, a kind of like a wonderful fresh air." He added that when he walked out of the cinema onto Tottenham Court Road, the real world suddenly felt "awfully sort of gritty and dirty and full of rubbish." It was, he said, "one of the few movies I've come out of recently where I really felt happy and uplifted." His warning to anyone looking for deeper meaning in it: "People are going to read too much into it. It's a simple, simple stuff for all ages." Though the letters he was already receiving suggested the reading-too-much-into-it had begun. One couple wrote asking if he'd come live with them for a few months to help fix their marriage.

I had a major fanboying moment just now!! For years, I’ve followed this hilarious TikTok account called Accidental Talmudist. The man behind the brand is a guy named Salvador Litvak aka “Sal”. I knew nothing about him other than his hilarious content, mostly good Jewish humor. Anyway, I always loved his stuff but we never connected. Until this week. Long story short, we just had a zoom meeting to discuss his new project that you absolutely need to know about, but hang on; I’m getting ahead of myself here. Why is he called The Accidental Talmudist? I always wondered about that. Listen to this!! Many years ago after growing up as a non religious Jew, Sal discovered Judaism. He had heard of the Talmud but every time he saw a Talmudic book on the shelves of a bookstore, he was intimidated and walked away without opening or buying the book. This went on for years. Then one day, he was at the book store and found himself again looking at the Talmud and again, he began to walk away. Then a voice inside of him said, “It’s just a book. Go find the first one of the series, read it, and get over your fear.” So that’s exactly what he did, he purchased the first tractate of the Talmud, the tractate of Brochos. What happened next is absolutely wild! He walked up to the counter to pay for the book, and the man behind the counter looked at the book and said to him, “Oh, you’re learning Daf Yomi?” He replied “What is daf yomi?” The man proceeded to explain to Sal that Daf Yomi is a global movement in which Jews around the world study one page of Talmud every day. The man then looked at him and said, “Today is day one of the cycle.” Clearly that was no coincidence and Sal was meant to be studying the Talmud. Well, fast forward seven years and he completes the entire Talmud. Now? He teaches Daf Yomi! Oh, you thought that was the most interesting part? Cute, not even close. Sal began his career as a lawyer but that didn’t last long. He moved to LA for film school decades ago and has since been producing and directing films with some of the biggest names in the industry. That’s right, an observant Jew directing movies in Hollywood. Still not the most interesting part. Sal and his wife Nina write the movies together and he then produces and directs them! This man who started out as a secular Jew who went to law school ended up being a deeply observant Jew producing Hollywood movies while also becoming a MASSIVE online influencer with millions of followers. So we had this zoom just now for me to hear about his new project, a movie opening tonight in over 70 cities across America. It’s called Guns & Moses. Sorry, I’m a sucker for a good pun. This movie is a thriller that combines so many different topics you’ll never find in any other movie. Some of the topics include Judaism, antisemitism, the 2nd amendment, and the list goes on. It is most definitely not your typical Hollywood movie!! He sent me a private screening so I can watch it, which I’m super excited to do. Here’s some more info on the movie and some quotes from people who have seen it. Guns & Moses is an edge-of-your-seat thriller about a Chabad rabbi who steps up to defend his community and becomes an action hero. A beloved, small-town rabbi who becomes an unlikely gunfighter after his community is violently attacked. Featuring a star-studded cast including Mark Feuerstein, Neal McDonough, Alona Tal, Christopher Lloyd and Dermot Mulroney. “Our goal was to make a Hollywood-quality film that would be a kiddush Hashem. And according to the buzz, we’ve succeeded. Twenty major publications have done pre-release stories about Guns & Moses, more are coming every day, it’s already being called the “surprise genre hit of the summer.” If all of that wasn’t interesting and inspiring enough, listen to this! As they were making this movie, Sal had a moment of doubt. He turned to Hashem and asked Him for a sign that he was on the right path and that they should keep going! At that moment, he got a call telling him that they just received a $500K tax incentive grant from the state of California, something that usually goes to big budget studio movies. So why did they get this grant? Sit down for this. They got it because a non-Jewish woman film commission in Sacramento respected that Sal is Sabbath observant. Yes. For real. True story. Sal is the first director in 100+ years of Hollywood history (dominated by Jews) to be shomer Shabbos. Unprecedented in Hollywood, the movie filmed Sun-Thurs instead of Mon-Fri, and the director had kosher food brought to him on set. Incredible stuff.
