When he and Gene Siskel reviewed it on their TV show, Ebert raved about it, said the film "thrilled me from beginning to end" and said it was both a great action film and a well-written drama. He later gave it 4 stars in a written review as well. Fans who had not been that aware of the film (which was released to limited fanfare and ad space in the doldrums of the Spring 1987 release period) went to see it after Ebert's rave and soon widely agreed with him on its quality.
