Futurama explained compound interest better than any professor

The most unrealistic part of that show wasn't the aliens or the robots—it was a bank staying open for 1,000 years without 'restructuring' your account into zero.

Unfortunately with 1000 years of inflation that still only buys a Pepsi.

In a thousand years $4.3 billion will be the price of a cheese pizza and a large soda at Panucci's.

4.3 billion used to be a comically large amount of money

Wow, what an original thought that you came up with you damn fraud.

Yes, now explain inflation

That Futurama bit nails it: 1% daily growth turns $1 into over $37,000 in a year. Professors drone on about formulas, but a robot's time machine makes the math stick. Exponential curves like this show up everywhere from savings to tech adoption.

Proof that time is more important than the initial deposit.

My favorite thing about this joke is the math is accurate.

2.5% interest? I remember that savings accounts were 4% back in the 90's. Money market accounts might be that good, but the best option at Wells Fargo is for savings accounts larger than the FDIC will insure for 2.5%. Checking doesn't get interest.

Now if Fry had a bank account that charged him for not using it when it was below a certain threshold, it’s more likely that Fry’s account would have been repeatedly charged a $5 fee a month along with a $35 overdraft fee until the account is just closed due to inactivity

Now I just need to live forever

$4.3 billion would buy him the same amount that .73 cents would have $1,000 years ago. This doesn’t explain shite.

lol Futurama was a great show

Cartoons teach compound interest better because they don’t pretend debt is your fault.

$4.3 billion in a thousand years should be just enough to buy a decent burger

I went and double checked the math... Technically he should have had ten times what the teller says. Most of the calculators don't go up to 1000 years, but one went up to 100 years. It turned $1 into $11.81 over 100 years at 2.5%. $0.93 x 11.81^10? $49 Billion.

Exactly! 👍 Compounding is a superpower everyone can use for himself.

Yes, but what was the rate of inflation over that same thousand years?

Nah, what’s that value adjusted for inflation?

So he can buy a slice of cheese pizza and a large soda now

We are not too far away from these two doing interactive news. What are the local weather and science tech news headlines? And put it in a Led Zeppelin meets Pink Floyd and Rush music prompt.

Make sure your kids watch this episode of ducktales, i only watched it once but never forgot the message

Colonic Map on file at the Bank 😆 Great Show.

thats an old joke from red dwarf. his bank balance compounds while he was in stasis, but also causes a banking system collapse and inflation reduces it to 0. iirc

What's even crazier is that if that rate was 2.5% instead of 2.25 it would be 49 billion

You know inflation is gonna be so ass, a cheese pizza in 3000 is gonna cost $4.3 billion

Yah, I had something like this happen to me and they told me that after 15 years or whatever it was that due to annual account fees I owed them money, lol.

But forgot inflation.

We also learned that Philip J Fry (named after his uncle) was a major historical figure as the first man to live on Mars, so the bank likely kept the account open and accumulating interest purely for ceremonial reasons at first, and then mistaking it for the Martian Fry later.

Wait till he finds out about inflation.

Pepsi can = 1.2 billion dollars

futurama is really funny and smart

Ok did they have next episode of Adjusting Inflation.
