End of an era. Nearly six years ago, trent.sol and I were sitting in Greg Fitzgerald 🦀 's basement ordering computer parts on Newegg to hand-build the first metal validators for Solana. Mainnet was still a ways away, hardware and network requirements were unknown, docs, tools and best practices were nonexistent. Even Testnet was barely more than a periodic bringup of a handful of cloud VMs. Our tiny but mighty early validator community were basically all on a first name basis with one another. A few months later, Trent and I, along with a couple other early Solana Labs employees, racked the resulting 7 machines in a data center in Denver. These were the first ever colocated nodes to serve Solana. In early 2020, we used these glowing green machines to help serve the genesis block and launch Solana Mainnet into the world. Today, the data center that houses them is shutting down. Trent and I went over this morning to tear out the rack to discover we were the last remaining tenants in a now otherwise abandoned facility, with apparently a single staff member left on hand. It was a little emotional for me to see these shut down, even though they haven't been active on the network for a very long time, having been repurposed for development work a while back. It's always humbling to reflect on how far Solana has come in so little time - taking down a handful of old, wonky hand-assembled boxes from the genesis days and considering today's huge global reach of the network, the devs, the products, and especially, all of you. Thank you all for being along with us on the wildest ride.

Taming the Edge: How lithium could help us control #fusion plasmas. This video captures the first flashes of lithium being injected into the #plasma of our ST40 tokamak, marking the start of our exploration into its effects. Why lithium? In fusion research, we aim for H-mode, a high-performance state with improved plasma confinement. Future fusion power plants are expected to operate in this mode. But H-mode brings a challenge: ELMs (Edge Localised Modes) are bursts of energy at the plasma edge, similar to mini solar flares. These can reduce plasma temperature and damage the divertor with intense heat and particles. Pioneering work by PPPL and others has shown that lithium can suppress ELMs and increase energy confinement time, leading to higher temperatures. On ST40, we’re currently injecting lithium powder during plasma shots to explore its effects. As part of our upcoming ST40 LEAPS upgrade – in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy and Department for Energy Security and Net Zero – we’ll go further, coating plasma-facing components with solid lithium using the ‘lithium evaporation’ technique. We’ll be experimentally testing several mechanisms. One key focus is how lithium absorbs hydrogen isotopes and reduces their recycling back into the plasma, lowering the density at the plasma edge, leading to a more stable edge pressure gradient. We’re starting to understand more about lithium’s effect on plasma performance, and early results show lithium isn't getting into the plasma core, which is good news for avoiding diluting the fusion fuel in future plants. The physics is complex, and we’re still learning. But each step brings us closer to fusion energy. RHP Patrick Forbes (Louisville Baseball) is an intriguing college arm to keep close tabs on this spring. Last year was Forbes' first focusing solely on pitching, and across 29 innings (12 appearances, 4 starts) he worked a 3.72 ERA with 32 Ks to 15 BB. Proceeded to have a great summer circuit that was split between Team USA and the Cape. On the Cape, Forbes was excellent and pitched his way to a 3.29 ERA with 22 Ks to 6 BB in 13.2 innings. Forbes has a strong, athletic build at 6-foot-3 and 215-pounds. Physicality throughout, some length in his lower-half. Compact, explosive delivery with a short, whippy arm stroke and plenty of arm speed. Attacks from a low-three quarter slot, ultra-high leg lift and really drives his back side through. Moves really well on the mound, high-level athlete. Relies heavily on his mid-90s fastball that he threw 77% of the time last spring. Sat 93-95 and topped out at 97, has been up to 98 this fall. Plenty of life through the zone with some ride in the top 1/3. Also plays well in the bottom 1/3. High-spin pitch that last year averaged North of 2,500 RPMs. Explodes out of his ~5'3" release height. Kind of a dead zone profile, but spin/release traits help compensate for it a little bit. Key is just staying out of the middle. 25% miss rate last year, good number especially given the usage. Supplements his FB with a high-70s-to-low-80s SL. Tight, two-plane tilt. Still gaining feel for the pitch and the shape can be a little inconsistent at times, but it will really flash. Will sometimes take on a true sweeper look that looks like a real weapon. Also throws a high-70s-to-low-80s CB. The shape will blend with his SL at times, but it will flash depth with sharp, downward bite. SL is definitely the better of the two - 41% miss rate last spring. Forbes rounds out his arsenal with a high-80s-to-low-90s power CH. Hardly ever uses it (5% usage in '24) but at times it showed serious late fade to the arm side with some tumble. Command can waver, but it's gotten better year-over-year and took another step forward this summer. Low mileage arm with plenty of upside. Bulldog mentality on the mound, checks a ton of boxes between his "now" stuff and athleticism. Certainly some reliever risk, but there's easy stuff to clean up across the board that will help maximize his chance to start. Day 1 upside this July.

If an AI can control 1,000 robots to perform 1 million skills in 1 billion different simulations, then it may "just work" in our real world, which is simply another point in the vast space of possible realities. This is the fundamental principle behind why simulation works so effectively for robotics. Real-world teleoperation data scales linearly with human time (< 24 hrs/robot/day). Sim data scales exponentially with compute. There are 3 big trends for simulators in the near future: 1. Massive parallelization on large clusters. Physics equations are "just" matrix math at their core. I hear GPUs are good at matrix math 🔥. One can run 100K copies of simulation on a single GPU. To put this number in perspective: 1 hour of wallclock compute time gives a robot 10 years (!!) of training experience. That's how Neo was able to learn martial arts in a blink of an eye in the Matrix Dojo. 2. Generative graphics pipeline. Traditionally, simulators require a huge amount of manual effort from artists: 3D assets, textures, scene layouts, etc. But every component in the workflow can be automated: text-to-image, text-to-3D mesh, and LLMs that write Universal Scene Description (USD) files as a coding exercise. RoboCasa is one example of a prior work. 3. End2end neural net that acts as simulator itself. This is still bluesky research and quite far from replacing a graphics pipeline, but we are seeing some exciting signs-of-life based on video gen models: Sora, Veo2, CogVideoX, Hunyuan (text-to-video); and action-driven world models: GameNGen, Oasis, Genie-2, etc. Genesis does great on (1) for certain tasks, shows good promises on (2), and could become a data generation tool for reaching (3). Its sim2real capabilities for locomotion are good, but there's still a long way to go for contact-rich, dexterous manipulation. It shows a bold vision and is on the right path to providing a virtual cradle for embodied AI. It is open-source and puts a streamlined user journey at the front and center. I had the privilege to know Zhou Xian and play a small part in his project since a year ago. Xian has been crunching code non-stop on Genesis with a very small group of core devs. He often replied to my messages at 3 am. Zhenjia Xu from our GEAR team helped with sim2real experiments in his spare time. Genesis is truly a grassroot effort with an intense focus on quality engineering. Nothing gives me more joy than seeing the simulation ecosystem bloom. Robotics should be a moonshot initiative owned by all of humanity. Congratulations.

Why does Putin need negotiations to resume? In my view, to buy time and prepare for mobilization. Putin doesn’t want to talk - he’s preparing for a blitzkrieg. This is consistent with Russia's negotiating practice: for the Kremlin, negotiations are not a way to reach an agreement or end the war, but a continuation of the war by other means. From Istanbul and Anchorage to the present day, Russia's position has not softened - it has become more hardline. For the Kremlin, every round of negotiations is an opportunity to consolidate new military gains, buy time, and push its demands further. Can Putin be forced into peace? Yes, but only through increased efforts and pressure. The world sees Russia's vulnerabilities, and there is real interest in ending the war. What is needed is coordinated action and sustained pressure. Now, in more detail. The United States has resumed diplomatic contacts with Russia and Ukraine after several months of an effective pause. Marco Rubio met with Lavrov in Manila. Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. At the same time, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker and NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine Commander Lt. Gen. Curtis Buzzard arrived in Kyiv. For now, this is shuttle diplomacy. Washington is separately gathering the positions of Moscow and Kyiv while assessing the possibility of a new trilateral round of talks. After meeting with Lavrov, Rubio said previous diplomatic efforts had failed and that new proposals were needed, since the old ones were unacceptable to Ukraine. This effectively rejects the formula associated with the Trump-Putin summit in Anchorage. Lavrov, by contrast, insisted on returning to the "spirit of Anchorage," demanded an end to arms supplies to Ukraine, and repeated Russia's accusations against Europe. At the same time, the United States continues its defense cooperation with Ukraine. In Kyiv, Whitaker and Buzzard discussed the supply of Patriot interceptors through PURL, licensing Patriot production in Ukraine, and the agreement on Ukrainian drones. Why have negotiations resumed now? Most likely because the United States sees a shift in the conditions of the war. Ukrainian strikes have shown that Russia has a weak spot and that it can, in fact, lose a war of attrition. However, Ukraine is also in a difficult position right now. Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports, merchant vessels, locomotives, and energy sector are limiting Ukraine's food exports and making the coming winter critically difficult - one that Ukraine will be able to endure and hold out only with the support of its allies. The United States may believe there is now a short window favorable for negotiations. Russia is already feeling the effects of Ukrainian strikes on its oil refineries and logistics, while Ukraine has not yet faced the full impact of Russian attacks on its exports, transport, and energy infrastructure ahead of winter. There is also a broader international context. Attacks on merchant vessels and grain ports affect insurance, freight rates, and global food prices. The United States is already facing disruptions to energy logistics because of the war with Iran and restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Washington has an interest in preventing simultaneous crises in global energy and food markets. On September 24, during the UN General Assembly week, Xi Jinping is expected to visit the United States. China is seeking a political role in resolving the war and has economic leverage over Russia. By restoring contacts with Moscow and Kyiv ahead of that visit, Washington is preparing its position: it is better to discuss the global consequences of Russia's war with Beijing while maintaining its own diplomatic track. Finally, the United States has a practical need to reduce the number of simultaneous crises. Washington may be seeking not so much a full-fledged peace agreement as a managed freeze of the war in order to reduce costs and focus on the Middle East and China. Bitcoin closed up 2.39% on July 1st and I watched TBO support drop from 62k down to 57k after a surprising low. It came close to a massive bullish engulfing candle, wick to wick BTC was up 6%, but it didn't close above Tuesday's open at 60,276 so the reversal isn't confirmed yet. RSI is showing me clear bullish divergence with higher lows since June 10th even as price made lower lows, volume exceeded the moving average at 1.5 billion, and on balance volume is flattening out just like it did before the last major reversal, so I still believe we're close to a July bounce even though this remains a bear market. Ethereum bounced a similar 2.39% with its own bullish divergence cluster and a closed short on the four hour, though volume and on balance volume still need to confirm. I also went through stablecoin dominance, Bitcoin dominance, and Solana dominance, plus DXY and USDJPY which are both flashing dangerously overbought conditions eerily similar to July 2024 right before Bank of Japan intervention. On the macro side I covered S&P futures, the Fear and Greed Index closing its third TBO close long as a warning to take profit, oil grinding down toward 68 to fill its gap, and gold and silver both showing early bullish RSI resets inside otherwise bearish structures. For my picks I walked through a long list of oversold setups I like for a July bounce including Solana, Litecoin, Crow, Cardano, Bitcoin Cash, Sui, Ethereum Classic, Ondo, Vechain, Monad, and Worldcoin, along with take profit zones on Morpho and Curve. I also flagged charts I'm more cautious on like Velvet and Adam despite bullish RSI resets, shared my Kraken short trade recap on Bitcoin, and closed out with stock picks including Palantir, Bloom Energy, DRAM, and SEI, plus a reminder that my deeper explainer video on all of this drops Sunday.
