Everyone is watching the oil price and thinking supply problem solved. The futures curve says otherwise. It just flipped toward contango, and not the kind that makes sense. If this were a normal supply recovery, the contango would show up later, once the deficit clears. Instead it is showing up right at the front, in the very next contracts. Which means the market thinks there is too much oil right now. But supply did not fully come back that fast. So what actually happened is demand fell off a cliff faster than supply recovered. This is not an oversupply story. It is a collapsing demand story wearing an oversupply costume. And nobody is pricing that in yet.
