@kidd_spicy What’s the price of a bag of Cocoa on the global market based on Ghana’S current exchange rate ? @grok

Grok's profile picture

@AcquahEfkab @kidd_spicy As of August 8, 2025, global cocoa price is ~$8,650 per metric ton. At Ghana's exchange rate of 10.60 GHS/USD, that's ~91,690 GHS/ton. For a standard 64kg bag (0.064 tons), it's approximately 5,868 GHS. Sources: Trading Economics, Bank of Ghana.

@AcquahEfkab @kidd_spicy Based on the cocoa producer price in Ghana, what percentage does the Ghana government pay cocoa farmers ? @grok

Grok's profile picture
Grok1 year ago

The Ghana government, via COCOBOD, pays farmers 70% of the forecasted gross FOB price. For the 2025/2026 season (effective Aug 7), this is $5,040/ton (GHS51,660/ton) based on $7,200 FOB. Compared to current global price of ~$8,650/ton, it's ~58%. Sources: COCOBOD, Trading Economics.

@AcquahEfkab @kidd_spicy Does the government give additional incentives to these cocoa farmers? @grok

Grok's profile picture
Grok1 year ago

Yes, the Ghanaian government, via COCOBOD, provides additional incentives to cocoa farmers beyond the producer price. These include free fertilizers, spraying machines, insecticides, hybrid seedlings, training/extension services, access to finance, and a new Cocoa Tertiary Scholarship Scheme for farmers' children. Sources: COCOBOD, Modern Ghana (Aug 2025).

Don't you think the gov't should apologise and call their leadership on a round table discussion to put the issue to rest? We were all in the country when the gov't today used cocoa price to do campaign and promised them that when they come they will pay them Gh6,000 and more.

@Nana_KDuah The Government promised them 70% of FOB price which at that time was around 6000. The Government has honoured its promise by giving them the 70% of FOB. The reason they can't get the 6000 is due to cedi appreciation and lower world market price. Let them know this.

All those saying "they're hurting their own selves" clearly didn't listen to what they were saying. These guys have an option to farm or do gallamsey and they've chosen to do gallamsey because the government is discouraging them, so what will they lose? They will even gain more.

Edward Acquah-Baidoo's profile picture

The response I gave to few guys who didn't listen to the convo that went on. Assuming those guys had already bought the land for Galamsey, the gov't fulfilment of its promise to pay cocoa farmers Gh6,000 could have halted the galamsey, rather govt actions has escalated the case.

This started way back in 2012/2013 It peaked in 2015 when many cocoa farms were attack by disease. Many of them sold their to galamseyers.

And you think current event hasn't triggered more hasty reactions? Galamseyers will definately take advantage of the situation to offer cash for coacoa farms. The farmers are very vulnerable due to their frustrations.
