This Barn Owl (Barbaġann) that forms part of a reintroduction project managed by FKNK MALTA was illegally shot over the past few days, ending up in the grounds of a school. The injured bird – with an evident gunshot injury to its right wing – was found at St Dorothy’s School in Ħaż-Żebbuġ. The bird was found by a member of the public and handed over to BirdLife Malta on Monday 18th December. Following an examination by the Government of Malta 🇲🇹 vet, it was today confirmed that the bird was suffering from a gunshot wound, leading to a broken right wing. The bird has a ring on its left leg bearing the details “024-BORP”. The reading of the ring highlights the fact that it is from the FKNK’s project, with the letters BORP standing for “Barn Owl Reintroduction project”. This reintroduction project led by FKNK since 2018 is funded by the Government through the Wild Birds Regulation Unit (WBRU), and its objective is to re-establish the species that was exterminated by illegal hunting throughout the years. Various pairs of #BarnOwl used to breed in Malta and Gozo regularly until the eighties. The Barn Owls are bred and reared in captivity in a facility in Buskett, before then being released back into the wild where it is hoped that these beautiful birds will then breed once again across the Maltese Islands. Footage shows activists reaching the ship and chanting “FREE PALESTINE!” New footage shows and explains the damage that the ship sustained. The vessel, carrying 30 international human rights activists en route to Gaza, caught fire and risked sinking as the crew battled the flames. An SOS was sent to nearby coastal states, including Malta. According to Israel’s Channel 12, Israel carried out the attack. The Maltese government stated that the vessel and its crew were rescued in the early hours of the morning after a nearby tug assisted with firefighting operations. Children, young children with mutilated bodies who are supposed to be celebrating the innocence of their youth and the best period of their lives, the parents who have lost their young children. And I ask, why? When leadership should be about humanity and empathy and not about who can inflict maximum damage to win a war or wipe out a nation or its people. I was proud this week to stand with other world leaders and add Malta to the growing list of allies recognizing Palestinian statehood. After tens of years of discussion in Malta, we took decisive action and did the right thing to do. I owe this to Ibrahim, a 15 year old icon of the resilience and strength of the Palestinian people. Ibrahim is now receiving the best medical care and prosthetics in Malta after having both his legs blown off and severely injured by a missile fired from a drone in Gaza. My heart is in Lourdes today, because the Knights and Dames of Malta traditionally bring a pilgrimage of the sick to Lourdes from all over the world this first week of May, the month dedicated to our Blessed Mother, and I was going to be with them! Zimbabwe has made its first compensation payment of US$3.1 million to white former commercial farmers under a 2020 agreement. Under that deal, Zimbabwe will not compensate for land taken over under the land reform program, but only for ‘improvements’ on the farms. 1% of the compensation is paid in cash, while the remaining 99% is issued in USD-denominated Treasury bonds. These bonds carry a 2% annual coupon rate and has maturities of 2-10 years. To date, 740 farms have been approved for compensation. This US$3.1 million payment will go to the first group of 378 farms, which have a total approved compensation value of US$311 million. Separately, Zimbabwe is also compensating farmers whose land was protected under Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements (BIPPAs). In these cases, Zimbabwean law requires payment for both the land and any improvements. Finance Minister Hon Prof Mthuli Ncube hopes the compensation will convince foreign creditors to clear Zim’s arrears and open up long term funding from sources such as World Bank and the AfDB.

Today, once again, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on EU member states to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization under the EU’s terrorism sanctions regime. While this decision is welcome, it does not change the reality on the ground. For more than three years, repeated attempts to move forward have been blocked by a number of EU member states, including France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Malta and Cyprus. Despite this, we must continue working toward a unified European position. I am often asked why this designation matters. My answer is simple: a terrorist listing, combined with parallel measures, weakens the regime and creates internal pressure within its security apparatus. This is a necessary step if we are to help bring freedom to the people of Iran. #IRGCterrorists

Tesla was a long way from mass-producing the Roadster at any level of affordability, but the demo made their vision more real and helped Tesla secure additional funding.
