The main characteristic of the fuel is still fossil based which is gasoline. The specifications are well structured in terms of its compliance to BIS standard IS 17021 published in 2018. #WATCH | Delhi: On ethanol, Vikram Gulati, Country Head and Executive Vice President (Corporate Affairs and Governance) of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, says, "...I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about the fuel. For example, if you look at it from the automotive sector, there is a lot of myth that if you use E20 blended fuel, vehicles will get damaged. It's a myth. It doesn't happen this way. There's a lot of myth about the amount of mileage loss or the fuel efficiency loss. Yes, there is some fuel efficiency loss, no doubt. But it is not so big as it is being made out to be...E85 and E100, that is, 85% ethanol and 100 % ethanol, are not meant for regular cars. It is meant for a different type of technology, which is called a flex fuel vehicle. This vehicle can take any mix of ethanol. So people need not worry. E20 is the standard fuel that will be available, and it is compatible with old vehicles and new vehicles. All vehicles sold after 1st of April 2023 are fully materially compliant with E20. And people need to be reassured that in 2021, before we went into E20, there was a very detailed scientific study done by the leading automobile testing agency in the country, which is ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). It clearly established that the possible damage to cars and two wheelers which are old is not there. It's very insignificant. And it also established that the fuel efficiency loss is to the extent of 2 to 4 per cent, not significant." On ethanol, he says, "As per the latest statistics from the government, the program so far has helped save 1.9 trillion rupees. Out of that, 1,60,000 crores has gone to farmers. Arvind Kejriwal has done it again. In his eagerness to spread misinformation, he claimed that E20 is both a petrol blend and a diesel blend. It isn’t. E20 refers exclusively to petrol blended with 20% ethanol. Diesel has no such E20 blend. Anyone claiming otherwise is either astonishingly ignorant or deliberately misleading people. Now to the facts that propaganda conveniently ignores: 1. The “massive mileage loss” claim is false. There is no scientific evidence, extensive vehicle testing or real-world data supporting the claim that E20 causes a drastic drop in mileage. 2. Why ethanol is used Ethanol has several advantages: • Higher octane rating (~108.5 vs petrol’s ~84.4) • Better combustion • Reduced hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate emissions • Lower lifecycle carbon emissions by around 40% • Better anti-knock performance • Lower intake temperatures due to its higher heat of vaporization 3. Better performance, cleaner fuel Vehicles designed for E20 benefit from: • Better acceleration and pickup • Improved ride quality • Superior anti-knock characteristics • Cleaner combustion • Negligible particulate emissions 4. What about mileage? Yes, ethanol has a lower calorific value than petrol. But modern engines are calibrated to take advantage of ethanol’s high octane rating, improving thermal efficiency and offsetting much of the potential loss. The result? • E10-designed vehicles calibrated for E20 typically see only about 1–2% reduction in fuel economy. • Others may experience around 3–6%, depending on engine design. That is a far cry from the alarmist claims being circulated. 5. Mileage depends on much more than fuel Fuel economy is influenced by: • Driving habits • Tyre pressure • Wheel alignment • Traffic conditions • Air-conditioning usage • Engine maintenance • Air filter condition • Proper gear selection In day-to-day driving, these factors often have a much greater impact than the marginal difference attributable to E20. 6. E20 wasn’t introduced overnight The transition followed extensive testing with SIAM and leading automobile manufacturers. Manufacturers have produced E20-compatible vehicles for years, with dedicated E20-compliant models rolling out from April 2023. 7. Real-world evidence matters E19/E20 petrol has been used across India for over 2½ years. During this period: • More than 20 crore two-wheelers • More than 3 crore petrol cars have operated on these fuels without any widespread reports of engine failures or abnormal mileage loss attributable to E20. Manufacturers have continued to honour warranties. 8. Automobile manufacturers have spoken Toyota Kirloskar says ethanol is a globally proven high-performance fuel and India’s transition followed rigorous international testing. Maruti Suzuki confirms there is no field evidence of corrosion, abnormal wear or reduced component life due to E20. It notes that while mileage may reduce by about 3–3.5% because of ethanol’s lower calorific value, the difference is offset by better acceleration, improved anti-knock performance and significantly lower emissions. Hero MotoCorp says its nationwide service data shows no evidence of increased damage or wear and tear in vehicles running on E20. The bottom line: The claim that E20 causes a drastic reduction in mileage simply does not stand up to science, engineering or real-world experience. And here’s the obvious question: are people really expected to believe that millions of motorists have been meticulously recording and remembering the exact mileage their vehicles delivered over two-and-a-half years ago, only to suddenly conclude that today’s fuel economy is because of E20? India’s transition to E20 is based on science, extensive testing and environmental responsibility—not WhatsApp forwards and political misinformation. Before lecturing the country on fuel policy, Arvind Kejriwal should at least learn the difference between petrol and diesel.

The automobile manufacturers, as well as the people who service these vehicles, all say there is no difficulty. Why this sudden interest? We have been using E15 (blend of 15% ethanol and 80% petrol) for the last three and a half years. We have been on E20 (blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol) since April of last year. From April 2025 to April 2026, it has already been one year, and we are now another five months beyond that. If someone is suggesting E25 (blend of 25% ethanol and 80% petrol), we have made it clear that we are conducting tests. Those tests will take time. Once the reports are available, we will evaluate them. Then we will discuss the findings with the stakeholders and the automobile manufacturers. After all, I neither manufacture the cars nor the fuel. The car manufacturers are comfortable with E20. Each one of them has made a statement to that effect. Consumers also appreciate the product. We have only begun the rollout of E85 (blend of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol), and that rollout will take some time because new petrol pumps and related infrastructure need to be put in place..."

Did a simple ethanol check myself yesterday! Watch it till the end! Took 170 mL of E20 petrol, added 20 mL of water, shook it well, and after the layers separated, the water/ethanol layer measured 40 mL. That suggests roughly 20 mL of ethanol in 170 mL of fuel around 11.8% ethanol (roughly E12), not E20. If my calculations are correct, then I have a genuine question: has the ethanol content quietly been reduced from E20 to E12 temporarily because of a widespread backlash? or is there another explanation for these results? Either way, this also shows how readily ethanol attracts water and what moisture inside a fuel tank can potentially do over time. Happy to be corrected if my calculations or the test method are wrong!! ☺️

At our own petrol pumps, none of the customers’ vehicles has shown any problems with E20. Those posting online also have no proof that E20 damages engines. Yes, three institutions produced reports on the long-term effects of E20, suggesting that older vehicles might experience problems, particularly on rubber parts. I used to admire Nitin Gadkari’s work a lot, but his relentless push for ethanol over the past few months is getting out of hand. Back in 2003 and 2006, the roadmap was clear and calculated, a steady 5% ethanol blending across states when vehicles were properly E5 compliant. That's how policy implementation should look. Instead, we're seeing an aggressive all-India push for E20, and now he is actively pushing for E85 and E100. What’s even more baffling is his response when asked why India isn't adopting a true choice-based model like Brazil. He completely passed the buck, stating that providing fuel options is Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s job, while simultaneously boasting that flex-fuel vehicles will give consumers the ultimate choice between ₹70/L ethanol and ₹120/L petrol. Btw he promised ₹15/L ethanol blended petrol back in 2023. If the fundamental policy decisions and market readiness fall under a different ministry, why force a aggressive narrative onto the automotive sector before the infrastructure or consumer choice is genuinely ready?
