Back door to Digital ID? Some are asking if the under-16s social media ban is a backdoor to Digital ID? As far as Kemi and the Conservatives are concerned, absolutely not. We are entirely opposed to digital ID and want to see the ban implemented in a way that doesn’t force mandatory digital ID onto anyone. Proving your age for social media should be no more intrusive than it is for buying alcohol.

Ursula von der Leyen announced yesterday that the EU will introduce a new mandatory EU age verification app for social media. The new law proposal will be presented after the summer. People creating new social media accounts will have to prove that they are above a certain age as the plans are to introduce social media bans for young people. Users will need a passport, ID card or digital ID to generate “over X age” proofs for platforms. For now, it seems that it will target new accounts but some are also pushing for retroactive ID requirement to verify already existing social media accounts.

It is being reported that Keir Starmer has u-turned on compulsory digital ID. Yet the Labour government has admitted that digital ID is not being abandoned. Instead, they are watering down the word “compulsory” while still continuing to develop the framework and machinery for digital ID.
