One of the biggest differences from Metal Slug is its combination of 2D characters and 3D backgrounds, which blend together surprisingly well without feeling out of place. As for the soundtrack, this might just be my impression, but it feels like it borrowed a lot of the spirit of Metal Slug. Unlike Metal Slug, Dolphin Blue has a much brighter and more cheerful atmosphere, and the music fits the game perfectly. The gameplay is fast-paced and fun, but after a short while the difficulty spikes dramatically, and there are quite a few sections where the game slows down, which can hurt the overall experience. Unfortunately, it wasn’t commonly seen in arcades and was never ported to home consoles, so most people have probably never heard of it. It’s a solid game with a lot of charm, which makes it all the more disappointing that it never got the recognition it deserved.

After Metal Slug 2, the reason X came out before 3 was because Metal Slug 2 had serious optimization issues, causing heavy slowdown during gameplay. So SNK decided to release an optimized version based on Metal Slug 2 first. That said, it wasn’t exactly the same game. They changed things like switching between daytime and nighttime backgrounds to create a different atmosphere, and even brought in some weapons that would later appear in Metal Slug 3. The controls were also improved, showing that a lot of care went into refining the experience. When you actually play it, you can clearly feel that the slowdown is significantly reduced compared to Metal Slug 2. Because of that, Metal Slug X became a very popular title alongside Metal Slug 3.

The stylish BGM that starts right from Stage 1 is excellent, and the Double Heavy Machine Gun was a really cool addition. That said, the biggest drawback is that the game feels very familiar—almost like you’ve seen it all before—which is hard to ignore while playing. In Korea, it was released around the time when arcades were disappearing due to the rise of PC cafe, so not many people actually had the chance to experience this game back then.

Metal Slug 6 was released during the series’ 10th anniversary year. It was also the first Metal Slug game to move beyond the Neo Geo platform and launch on the Atomiswave system. Since it came out during a period when the arcade market was already in decline, not many people seem to remember this title today. While the graphics did improve with the platform change, it doesn’t quite capture the finely crafted pixel art style that made Metal Slug 2 and 3 so memorable. In particular, the high-resolution backgrounds can feel a bit awkward because they don’t always blend naturally with the lower-resolution character sprites. The game also introduced Clark and Ralf as playable characters, along with unique special abilities for each character. A new weapon switching system was added as well, allowing players to carry and swap between two weapons. Another feature I thought was a good idea was Easy Mode, where you start with a Heavy Machine Gun by default, although you can’t access the Final Mission. It felt like a nice addition for more casual players.

Metal Slug turned 30 this year. It has aged incredibly gracefully; and I think the main reason is its pixel graphic style. Unlike early 90s vector graphics, ray tracing, or hyper-realistic styles, pixel art ages much better. You could release Metal Slug today as an arcade game and it would still work perfectly. You can't say the same about the majority of games from three decades ago. Many, many coins went into this beauty back in the day…

However, since it was designed based on the skill level built up from 1, 2, and X, it’s extremely challenging. As a huge fan of the Virtua Fighter series, I was eagerly waiting for Virtua Fighter 5 to hit the arcades. Unfortunately, Sega didn’t sell the arcade hardware and instead operated it through a rental system, so outside of Japan, the game was nearly impossible to find in arcades. Thankfully, with the huge leap in performance of the PS3 and Xbox 360, Virtua Fighter 5 received the first truly complete console port in the series. I remember having so much fun playing it back then. Sadly, in Korea, the Tekken series was so widely available in arcades that very few people even knew about Virtua Fighter 5. It’s a shame that such a great game slowly faded into obscurity. Eventually, the series seemed to lose its momentum, and I thought we would never see a new Virtua Fighter again. So you can imagine how happy I was when Sega announced that they were working on a new entry. Is there anyone out there who has been waiting for a new Virtua Fighter as long as I have?

I think most people started the Metal Gear series on PlayStation. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, in particular, was released exclusively for the MSX2, making it difficult to experience unless you were an old-school gamer in Japan. Looking back now, it’s an incredible game where almost all of Metal Gear’s core systems were already fully formed, but it was far too difficult to play at such a young age, so I remember trading it for another game before getting very far.

The King of Fighters 2003 was the last entry released on the Neo Geo platform, and NeoWave became the first KOF title to move to the Atomiswave hardware. It feels like SNK made it mainly to test the new arcade board, because the game comes across as surprisingly low-effort. Back then, the Atomiswave hardware was expensive, so very few arcades had it, which means not many people actually got the chance to play NeoWave. I’ve even wondered if that’s why the next game was called The King of Fighters XI. Technically, it was the twelfth main entry in the series, yet SNK skipped “XII” for the numbering at that point. It almost feels as if they wanted to pretend NeoWave never happened.

Let me introduce Altered Beast, one of Sega’s classic arcade games. If you’re in your 40s and spent any time in arcades, you’ve probably seen it at least once—more likely many times. When you defeat the white wolf, it drops an orb. When you collect it, you hear the famous “Power up!” voice and the main character starts becoming more muscular. After the third power-up, he finally transforms into a beast, gaining incredible strength. That transformation is really the core of the game. Another fun part is that each stage lets you transform into different beasts like a werewolf, dragon, tiger, or bear. I had a lot of fun playing it in arcades back then. Later it was ported to the Mega Drive and also to the Famicom. But the Famicom version was a bit disappointing compared to what I expected. The transformation animation is one of the highlights of the game, but it’s missing there, so it doesn’t quite capture the same impact as the arcade version.

Today is the 41st anniversary of Back to the Future! Back to the Future II on Super Famicom started as a Zelda-like RPG. It was later reworked into a straightforward 2D side-scrolling platformer where Marty rides a hoverboard almost constantly. There was almost a western localisation but it fell apart when the quality of the game was considered under par.

I naturally expected it to be ported to home consoles and waited for it, but in the end, it never came out on any console. Interestingly, though, it was ported to PC. It had a few shortcomings, but I have great memories of playing it on a 386 computer and having a really good time. Anyone else play it?

Back in the ‘90s, there was one arcade game you were almost guaranteed to find: Irem’s Ninja Baseball Bat Man. It was incredibly fun, and with support for up to four players, it was one of the best games to enjoy with friends. But did you know this? While the game was a huge hit in South Korea, it received a fairly lukewarm response in Japan and was released in very limited numbers in North America, making it virtually unknown there. Pretty strange, isn’t it? One of the reasons I loved this game was that, unlike most Irem titles, it wasn’t brutally difficult. You could have a great time with just a single credit. Most Irem games were known for their gritty atmosphere, incredibly detailed pixel art, and punishing difficulty. This one, however, stood out with its bright colors and cute, round character designs, giving it a completely different feel. If you’ve never played it before, do yourself a favor and try it on an emulator.

The Game Boy was a massive hit, but to be honest, I was always more jealous of the friends who had a Game Gear. Even though it drained batteries quickly, its game quality was on a completely different level compared to the Game Boy. In reality, most people used rechargeable AA batteries or an AC adapter, so the battery issue wasn’t as big of a problem as many people think. The real issue was the price. I played Streets of Rage again recently, and it’s still a great game today.

Fatal Fury Special was ported to the PC Engine CD, and at that level, it’s fair to call it an almost perfect conversion. The Super Famicom version suffered from hardware limitations and was handled by Takara, a different company, so the results weren’t particularly impressive. In contrast, the PC Engine CD version of Fatal Fury Special was developed directly by SNK as a test case for CD-based game production before the release of the Neo Geo CD, which explains its exceptionally high level of quality.

It's hard to describe how impressive Frontier: Elite II was when it was released in 1993. David Braben's masterpiece sequel of Elite (1984) seemingly took forever to be developed, but the result was mindblowing. Trading, combat, exploring - all part of the original Elite concept - but now on a truly galactic scale. If you ever wanted to know what it means to feel small in a game, Elite II showed you exactly that. Often, I would just hop from one planet to another for the sheer joy of flying through space. Literally millions (!) of planets; just like the universe, Elite II seemed to have no end, no frontier. I know when you look at the graphics today, they look very basic, but in 1993 this was stunning. Sometimes it felt more like art than just a game. I was never good at it, never reached Elite status, but it didn't keep me from getting totally lost in space and time.
