A Cholera Epidemic has struck war-torn Sudan. Sudan’s Ministry of Health declared the nationwide cholera epidemic due to contaminated drinking water and weather conditions. The eastern states of Kassala and al-Qadarif have the highest numbers of confirmed cases. According to the WHO, 11,327 cholera cases with 316 deaths had been reported across Sudan. The humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict in Sudan has exacerbated the spread of diseases, including cholera, with large numbers of displaced people sheltering in areas without sanitary infrastructure. Sudan and Russia agreed "on everything" regarding creating a Russian naval base in the country - foreign minister of Sudan during his visit to Russia. Russia is solely interested in protecting its own geopolitical interests (by building the naval base) and exploiting Sudan's resources to profit (selling weapons and diesel, illegal smuggling of gold). This is the essence of Russia's cooperation with other countries: Russia will only think of itself and will not hesitate to betray any partner at any point it deems convenient. Russia had planned to build a naval base in Sudan for a long time. After the fall of Assad's regime in Syria and access to local naval bases as good as lost, Russia has intensified contacts with Sudan on this matter. This issue has become increasingly important to Russia even before it lost access to Syria's naval bases, but especially in the current situation. Russian Mediterranean branch of the navy can't use the naval infrastructure in the Black Sea thanks to Ukraine's decisive efforts of making sure Russia's fleet is not welcome there. Furthermore, as of February 2022, Turkey has closed the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits for military shipping. Thus, the Mediterranean part of the Russian navy had to solely rely on the Tartus base in Syria - which is no longer an option. A naval base in Sudan would allow Russia to strengthen its naval presence on NATO's southern flank. And if Russia has naval bases in Libya and Sudan, it will be able to establish supply lines into the landlocked parts of Africa where Russian Africa Corps units are or might be in the future. Back in 2019, Russia and Sudan signed an agreement that would give Russian navy access to Sudanese ports. In December 2020, they signed the agreement for actually building the base - it would give Russia a naval base capable of hosting 300 personnel and four warships in Port Sudan for 25 years. The document was not ratified by Sudan's parliament. After a bit of back and forth, the project continued to remain on hold - until now. Despite repeated claims to support "activization of political and diplomatic efforts directed at establishing lasting peace" in Sudan, in November 2024, Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that called for immediate ceasing of hostilities and delivering humanitarian aid to Sudan. All the other 14 members of the UN Security Council voted in favor of the resolution. There have also been repeated claims that Russia has been secretly funding both sides of the conflict in the war-torn Sudan. "Russia chose obstruction: standing alone as it voted to imperil civilians, while funding both sides of the conflict – yes, that's what I said: both sides" - the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Linda Thomas-Greenfield. This was confirmed by other experts. It is also important to note that Russia is the major weapons supplier to Sudan: about 87% of its weapon imports are Russian. To make matters worse, Russia has been illegally smuggling $13 billion worth gold out of Sudan per year (the country is one of the largest global gold exporters). In addition, Russia has been shipping diesel to Sudan despite EU and US sanctions. Sudan is currently in the middle of a civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. It is the least developed country and among one of the poorest countries in the world. 🇺🇸🇸🇩 Pressed on RSF Atrocities in Sudan, State Department Won’t Utter “UAE” At a House Foreign Affairs hearing on crimes against humanity in Sudan, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs questioned the State Department Bureau of African Affairs about extensive evidence that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is backing the Rapid Support Forces. She cited reporting from: ▪️Reuters ▪️The Wall Street Journal ▪️Amnesty International ▪️A UN Panel of Experts ▪️State Department–funded Sudan Conflict Observatory, ▪️and U.S. intelligence But, when Jacobs asked Deputy Assistant Secretary of African Affairs Vincent D. Spera directly whether the UAE was continuing to provide material support to the RSF, he was unwilling to name the RSF’s chief external backer or acknowledge its role, instead deflecting to vague references to “external actors.” Jacobs pressed further on U.S. leverage, pointing to ongoing arms sales to UAE, including a $1.4 billion sale of helicopter and F-16 parts, and asked why Washington is not using that leverage to stop another large-scale atrocity after some 60,000 people were estimated killed as El-Fasher fell to the UAE-backed RSF following a prolonged 18-month siege. The exchange comes as Rep. Jacobs and Sen. The exchange comes as Rep. Jacobs and Sen. Senator Chris Van Hollen have introduced the Stand Up for Sudan Act, which would block U.S. arms sales to the UAE until it ceases material support for the RSF, which has carried out mass killings and ethnic massacres in Sudan and has been documented using rape, gang rape, and sexual slavery as tools of terror and displacement.
