Can you explain to us how this deal will lead to a different outcome than what we’re seeing in #Kenya and #Nigeria? What’s so special about the package provided by the @IMFAfrica and @WorldBank to #Ethiopia that it won’t lead to the same chaos? You rightfully called out the IMF last month for its “cut and paste” austerity policies that led to the protests in Kenya.

#Ethiopia's economic reforms mobilize $27 billion—Eyob Tekalign, State Minister of the Ministry of Finance Eyob Tekalign (PhD), State Minister of the Ministry of Finance, reported in a recent interview that Ethiopia has mobilized $27 billion following the macro-economic reforms introduced last week. The government's new macroeconomic reform program includes a shift to a market-based exchange regime, which immediately led to a 40 percent depreciation of the Ethiopian birr. Expert opinions on these changes vary. Henok Fasil (PhD), a macroeconomist and World Bank consultant in Ethiopia, acknowledges the theoretical merits of a market-based foreign currency regime while expressing concerns about its practical implementation in the Ethiopian context. FirstPost TV interview. Here’s a video highlighting the main topics I discussed: 1. Ethiopia’s recent elections. The successful completion of the elections is a big postive not only for Ethiopia but for Africa. Furthermore, it assures reforms will continue and sustained economic growth in the world’s 2nd fastest growing economy in 2026 (IMF). The elections were declared free and fair by international observers including the African Union (AU). 2. Ethiopia’s right to regain its own direct unfettered access to the sea. In my view it was a historical mistake that made Ethiopia landlocked. Ethiopia is the world’s 10th most populous country with 135 million people and amongst the 5 largest economies in Africa with a GDP of US$556 billion (PPP). 3. The US$5.0 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), is already completed and fully operational. It’s a hydro electric power dam (not an irrigation dam) which does not divert or reduce water flow to Egypt. If there are water flow concerns, they can be addressed by highly qualified technical experts from Egypt and Ethiopia, as has been done continuously. The GERD provides electricity to millions across Eastern Africa who previously lived in absolute darkness and is a clean, green renewable energy source which is environmental friendly.
