That synopsis was very informative Mike. PM Carney’s speech in both English and French was not only for the Europeans, but Canadians too. Canada is officially a bilingual country. You can’t be a federal politician without being able to speak both languages.

Totally agree! As a Canadian I couldn’t be more stoked on our PM, he’s helping me for the first time actually believe in a government for the people. The integrity he has embodied is incredibly inspiring and I’m very stoked on the deepening ties with Europe!

Thanks for breaking this down. As an Irishman, I fully support this initiative and hope it can be implemented soon. The EU, along with Canada and possibly Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, will become an economic powerhouse.

Apparently, there are real downsides to being full members of the EU. This association category might be more appealing to others if Canada can make it work. I'm a Canadian and this is all very new to me. But I work with some Europeans and they are giving me their opinion on some of these downsides. Chief among their complaints is the unelected nature of EU leadership?? Is that true?

But, does anybody know what being an “associate member” means. Everybody who’s praising or condemning Carney for this move are simply partisan. Nobody knows.

A speech of genuine statesmanship from Mark Carney the likes of which you rarely see these days. Superbly articulate in English French and German and setting out precisely why building a strong and resilient Europe is now paramount.

This is an excellent summary of Carney’s speech today which should be watched by anybody interested in following what’s going on. I too had to smile at what he chose to say in French, but of course the translation in English would be available to everyone. Well done, Mike!
