Continuing my 3D Gaussian splats pipeline iteration... This time I get closer. Here’s a quick test comparing training steps: 12 million splats + 60k steps vs. 6 million splats at 40k steps. The number of splats clearly impacts the level of detail. But I keep in mind the trade-offs when rendering 3D GS in real-time.

Porting over some HLSL point cloud shaders over to spark, a gaussian splatting renderer for Three.js. Some of the effects look a bit messy with 3DGS, but fun to play around with! Also using their new depth of field here which looks really nice. Demo coming soon!

3D Gaussian Splatting can struggle with highly specular surfaces. But this is perhaps the best 3DGS of a watch that I've seen. It even does a decent job with the Cyclops lens. This is 11MB. With the upcoming SOGS integration in SuperSplat, it will be 3MB!

During preprocessing, splats are assigned to mesh vertices, and their relative transformations are stored. Once this data is saved, you can instantly use it in your applications without further preprocessing. At runtime, we animate the background 3D mesh, update the Gaussian splats in parallel, and resort all Gaussian splats every frame based on the viewer’s perspective.
