Faraja is a very special elephant. Born in January 2012 to Fenella, an elephant from the FA family that was being researched by Elephant Family, he’s leucistic, meaning he has a partial lack of pigmentation. His skin is pale and his tail and ear hair is light in colour. When covered in mud, it can be hard to see, but the difference is there. When Fenella was speared and died in August 2012, Faraja came into our care. Coincidentally, we also raised his likely half‑brother – Jasiri – whose mother was believed killed by poachers in the same year. We hope we’ve done Fenella proud. We raised Faraja like one of our own until he was ready to return to the wild. Today, he lives among the wild bulls of the Kibwezi Forest, often in tow with his half‑brother Jasiri, but he still returns to visit:

After more than a year away, our old friend Nguvu stopped by! Nguvu is a unique orphan. We rescued him in 2016 after he became stuck in a drying waterhole. Our Voi Keepers managed to haul him out using ropes and a pulley, but he was so exhausted it took four days of tender care and ample food before he was finally able to stand up unaided. His name – 'Nguvu' – means 'strength' in Kiswahili, and within a few years he quickly transitioned to the wild. While his time in our care was briefer than most orphans, he still circles back to see us. This time, it had been 18 months since his last visit to Voi! We don't know when Nguvu's next visit will be, but whenever he is in the mood for home, we will be here to welcome him. Meet our orphan herd on a journey back to the wild:

After nearly four years away, ex-orphan Tundani just returned home for a visit! The Voi dependent orphans were awed to be in the presence of a wise older brother – and he seemed to enjoy all the adoration. Watch to the end and you’ll see that he even popped by to meet Chapeyu, who is still recovering from his spear injury in ‘Voi hospital.’ We rescued Tundani back in 2013, when he was just a year old. He was found alone and had clearly been struggling to survive. He has always been a remarkably calm and composed bull – and after such a long time away, it is wonderful to see how he is thriving. We asked the rangers in Akagera National Park about this juvenile elephant, and they told us he has lived like this for 17 years. When he was still very young, he went to the lake to drink. A crocodile took advantage and ate part of his trunk. Later in life, he fell into a poacher’s trap and lost his leg — but he was rescued. What truly inspired us was his mother. For all these years, she has never left his side. Always protecting. Always guiding. Always there. This is not just a story of survival — it’s a story of strength, resilience, and unconditional love. 🐘💔🤍 Nature can be cruel, but it can also be deeply beautiful.

He stands by the trough, waits for the others, and joins in with their morning breakfast rituals. He might be all grown up but, like a lot of kids, he still likes to raid the fridge whenever he can! He visited last month among a cohort of more than twenty ex-orphans who had padded in from the bush. Sometimes he rocked up with the herd. Other times, he came alone. And sometimes, our Casanova was on a mission: to woo Suswa! The two elephants spent two or three days together, so we look forward to seeing whether the pitter-patter of tiny feet comes from that sojourn. Although everyone gives him the respect he is due, Laikipia is very tolerant of the dependent orphans. When he arrived for breakfast after his honeymoon, he scooped up range cubes next to Kenderi at the feeding trough and then drank from the water trough next to Lemeki. Maxwell woke up with a pep in his step — because friends Kerrio and Taroha were coming to visit! Max is our resident blind black rhino. He is also the most popular member of our Nursery herd. He doesn’t join the orphaned elephants out in the forest for a number of reasons — black rhinos are very territorial by nature, and because Max is blind, he has his own, expansive stockade to call home — but visitors are always welcome at his door. Most mornings, the orphaned elephants make a point to stop by Maxwell’s gate as they head into the forest. They share a lovely hello, then go about their respective days. He arrived at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery in poor condition, requiring round-the-clock care, but even then with a big personality! Today, he’s one of the most steady and nurturing elephants in our little Kaluku herd — with a big soft spot for his pseudo elephant sister 'Korbessa'. Alesi: No, no, no. I wouldn't allow it, even if as a member of the Italian family I could give him some advice. Not advice, but the way an Italian family behaves. Because today he is not in a team, he is in a family and it is important to understand the mechanism, the mentality. But I am sure he has already understood many things. Q: What can he bring to Ferrari? Alesi: He brings quality. He is a guy who is seven times world champion. Arriving here, he brings his experience, but also his humility. Because when I talk to the guys who worked on his car, they were impressed by how he behaves.

Noah is a one-elephant welcoming committee (this was filmed in 2023 & we can confirm he’s only grown more self-assured since then)! After sending us his regards, he runs off to Malkia. His mum, Nasalot, is an orphan we rescued & raised from infancy to independence. In fact, she was one of the ‘founding females’ who started our Ithumba orphan herd. Now her wild-born family (she has two calves) is growing up in the wild, happy & confident as they should be! Meet more members of our family tree:

Beckett was surrendered by his family after 16 years because they said he was old and it was his time to go and they didn't want to deal with it. Beckett showed us he wasn't quite ready yet and he luckily only had to stay a few days at the shelter before he found a family that will give him the peace, love, and comfort he deserves. Poor Beckett, he didn't deserve that. People suck. How the heck do you give your 16 year old dog to a shelter? 🤯What is wrong with people?!!! I'm assuming he lived with them his whole life! How confused & scared he must have been. This is why I like animals so much more than people! God Bless his new family. Thank you!!!

Amboseli's elephants have been studied for decades – so when researchers watched a seven-month-old bull's mother vanish in 2012, they knew exactly who he was: born 28 January, son of Fenella, of the FA family. Faraja was found being shepherded by young females from another family entirely. They could offer protection, but not milk which he needed to survive. We raised him until he heard the call of the wild. Today he is 14, roaming the Chyulu Hills. A 100km+ corridor runs from Amboseli, through the Chyulu Hills to Tsavo – so maybe, one day, he'll find himself back wandering through the place he hailed from. Read Faraja's rescue story:

Mongkol is a 61-year-old former logging elephant. His captive-held life was spent hauling trees in the Thai forest. His body shape is deformed through hard labor, and he lost his right eye and tusk in this brutal logging practice. Mongkol was rescued and brought to Elephants World to spend the rest of his days relaxing peacefully in freedom by the River Kwai. He is an extremely gentle and sensitive elephant who enjoys music, especially this slow movement by Beethoven, which is often played for him during the day and night.
