Legged Locomotion… meets Skateboarding [Paper ⬇️] Most robot movement models either rely on fixed patterns or struggle to handle complex changes. DHAL (Discrete-time Hybrid Automata Learning) takes a different approach: using reinforcement learning to teach robots when and how to switch movements in real-time: ✅ Learns when to switch between different motions without pre-labeled data ✅ Handles complex, high-dimensional movements like a quadrupedal robot on a skateboard ✅ Uses a multi-critic architecture to improve contact-based motion control ✅ Works in both simulation and real-world environments with strong results It proves that robots can learn movement transitions on their own, without predefined rules. It is achieved by imitation learning from teleoperation: We propose a VR-based REAL-TIME teleoperation that streams the stereo video observation from the robot camera to the VR device. Force is arguably the most overlooked ingredient in modern robot learning. Introducing FACTR 2: it turns *any* commodity robot into a force-aware system with no force sensors required. What stood out to me is how it matches or outperforms much larger models like ACT using noisy, real-world community data instead of giant private datasets. Why it’s worth a look ✅ 26% performance boost from pretraining on open-source data ✅ Runs on consumer hardware, even a MacBook ✅ 30% faster responses with async inference and smart architecture tweaks ✅ Strong results across Meta-World, LIBERO, SO100, and SO101 ✅ Fully open source: weights, code, training pipeline, eval stack They also introduced smart efficiency tricks like using fewer visual tokens, pulling outputs from mid-layer, and separating perception from action to make it all run fast. The robot is using vision & adapts in real time. SkildAI: "From raw images and joint feedback, the model directly outputs low-level motor commands. This single neural network enables humanoid robots to seamlessly walk across flat ground, climb stairs, and step over obstacles without any planning, mapping, or manual switching between behaviors. Policies trained on real robot data via imitation can be surprisingly capable. But for domains like dexterous manipulation, they are often not quite good enough: they move slowly, miss grasps, make unreliable contact, and fail under small perturbations. Can we improve them without any additional data collection on the real robot? In SCORE, we show that we can improve real-world diffusion/flow policies cheaply by using simulation to simply learn how to steer them on deployment.
