How purpose and fulfillment physically change your brain's mitochondria: "People who felt more purpose in life and who felt more connected to others, it seemed like that was sufficient to increase the energy transformation capacity of the mitochondria in their brain." "If you tweak the mitochondria in a rat...

Mitochondria do more than power our cells: they shape how we think, feel, and experience the world. In this interview, Martin Picard breaks down his new research that illuminates how mitochondria affect brain energy, brain networks, mental health, and ultimately, our quality of life. Dr. Picard walks us through his team's revolutionary brain mapping study, which examined over 700 sections of the human brain to uncover how mitochondria are distributed and specialized by brain region and cell type. The results have profound implications for how we understand, cognitive decline, and psychiatric disorders like depression bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. In this episode, you'll learn: - Why mitochondrial health is essential for brain function - How different brain regions rely on different types of mitochondria - Why people respond so differently to the same metabolic dysfunction - How future scans and biomarkers could help us measure brain energy non-invasively - What it means to think of ourselves as “energetic beings” rather than just biological machines When it comes to metabolic psychiatry, mitochondria are a key player. This research is a huge step towards better understanding these tiny organelles and the role they play in mental health and cognitive function. Science Corner: David Friedberg Explains Recent Mitotherapy Breakthroughs ⚡️ On E224, david friedberg broke down what mitotherapy is and how recent discoveries could unleash this treatment for many diseases: "So mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell." "Every cell in our body gets its energy, which is what it uses to function, from the mitochondria." "And so there's been a lot of research into the relationship between mitochondria and aging, and that dysfunctional mitochondria may actually be a key driver for many diseases." "Including many cancers, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS, features of autism, muscle tissues being weak, etc." " So, as the cells get older and the mitochondria stop working, we make new mitochondria." "But over time, the DNA degrades and the mitochondria become less effective and there are fewer functional mitochondria per cell." Friedberg highlighted three recent papers: 1) "The power and potential of mitochondria transfer" (nature) -- "these folks identified and demonstrated that mitochondria can actually transfer from one cell to another" -- " So, if you've got a cell that's got damaged, or dysfunctional mitochondria, they've identified three mechanisms by which mitochondria can move into a cell that needs more mitochondria that are working and are more functional." -- "And as a result, it can rejuvenate or provide energy to a dysfunctional cell, which might improve dysfunctional tissue or improve disease." 2) "A human brain map of mitochondrial respiratory capacity and diversity" (nature) -- " this was the first mapping of the mitochondria in the human brain" -- " what it showed was that different parts of the brain, different cells, had different amounts of mitochondria and different mitochondrial function." -- "(This) starts to highlight how that difference in energy production in different cells in different parts of the brain may actually cause some of the things like memory loss or speech impairment," -- "the mitochondrial dysfunction in the brain might actually be the key driver of that aging symptomology." 3) "Organelle-tuning condition robustly fabricates energetic mitochondria for cartilage regeneration" (nature | Bone Research) -- " (the researchers) figured out a way to treat stem cells so that (they) would start to make an excess amount of mitochondria than they normally would make" -- " So they created highly energetic mitochondria and they made a lot of them." -- " the idea that we can put mitochondria into our body or into tissue in our body to heal it or repair it has been something that folks have been trying to do research around for a long time" -- " but the limiting factor is access to enough mitochondria" -- " so this mechanism that they developed opens up the door to this whole new therapeutic modality, a new type of therapy called mitotherapy" Conclusion: " ... based on the series of papers that we're seeing coming out recently, I believe (this) could end up becoming a really incredible new therapy that may ultimately lead to the treatment for many diseases that we're dealing with right now."

Dr. Andrew Huberman just confirmed a “wild conspiracy theory” about incandescent lights and LED bulbs. The long wavelengths found in incandescents increase your metabolism and “charge your mitochondria.” Conversely, the LED bulbs that most of you have in your house are “causing disruptions in mitochondrial function.” DR. ANDREW HUBERMAN: “Your mitochondria function better, you increase ATP production, your metabolism increases in the presence of red light, long wavelength light to the skin.” “Shine long wavelength light on somebody, watch blood glucose levels in a blood glucose test, and it’s blunted.” “Now, the LED lights that are commonly used now… that short wavelength light, in the absence of long wavelength light, has been shown to damage the mitochondria.” “This used to be considered crazy. This was like chemtrail crazy, right?” “But now we’re starting to see from animal studies and human studies, from Glenn Jeffreys and others, that people’s vision gets better when they get in front of an incandescent bulb once a day.” “If they get sunlight, which also has long-wavelength light, your vision improves because of improvements in mitochondria.” The Biden administration quietly pushed incandescents out of the market through aggressive energy regulations. But you can still find them online today if you look hard enough. If that health insight stood out to you, there’s a lot more where that came from.

How much physical energy does it ACTUALLY cost you to worry about the future? Dr Martin Picard's research argues stress isn't just a mental weight - it's an expensive biological tax on your cells. In his lab, when human cells were exposed to stress hormones, the energy cost of just staying alive inside those cells shot up by 60% (He’s also the scientist whose team literally sliced a human brain into 703 cubes just to map how energy moves through it 🤯) You have a stressful morning, a difficult conversation, or a few anxious thoughts you can't shake, and by 2pm you feel completely drained. Your mind is tired, but your cells are genuinely exhausted. Dr Martin Picard is a Professor of Behavioural Medicine at Columbia University and I sat down with him to understand how our emotions and lived experiences physically change the mitochondria inside us - the tiny structures responsible for producing all the energy we rely on. My energy has always felt a bit like roulette. Some days I wake up feeling incredible, other days I feel like I've done the exact same things but I've got nothing in the tank. Martin completely reframed how I look at this. Energy isn't just a biological default; it's one of the most important scientific questions of our lives. We discussed things like: - Why you can do everything “right” (sleep, diet, exercise) and still wake up completely exhausted. - The physical tax of stress and what a single anxious morning does to your cells. - Why mitochondria are the missing link behind burnout, depression, and chronic fatigue. - What actually dictates your cellular energy day-to-day. - The truth about whether fasting, meditation, deep purpose and relationships can rewrite your biology. This is a conversation about understanding what your body is constantly responding to where your energy is actually going and why so many of us feel tired in ways that more sleep or more food don't always solve. If you feel flat, anxious, or exhausted and can't explain why - this one's for you.
