FROM PLASTIC WASTE TO LASTING PATHS! Plastic waste is one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time, but it can also become part of the solution. Instead of relying solely on concrete, discarded plastics can be recycled and combined with sand or other aggregates to produce durable composite slabs for walkways, pavements, and selected drain covers. Here is some fabulous news from Tamil Nadu. A new beautiful Mangrove forest is coming up in 25 hectares at Kudikadu village in Cuddalore District. In one of it's kind initiative we have planted 37,500 propagules of Rhizophora & Avicenia species under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission last year. This would help to conserve marine biodiversity and enhance livelihood opportunities for the local community. Green TN Mission is breaking new grounds with fresh plantation of 5 lakh Mangrove propagules in the state. Niger Moves To End Plastic Pollution In an effort to combat environmental pollution, the government of Niger is enforcing a 12-year old law banning the use of plastic carrier bags in the country. The government gave Nigerien marketers 6 months to phase out their use of plastic bags, with the law set to go into full enforcement in January 2027. This move is in keeping with Nigerien President General Abdourahmane Tiani’s progressive vision for the country, which has continued to record economic, social and political wins since severing ties with its former colonizer France in 2023.

The restoration of Kariyachalli Island, located in the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park near Thoothukudi coast of Tamil Nadu, has commenced. This initiative, by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department in collaboration with SDMRI and IIT Madras, aims to strengthen coastal resilience of Tuticorin and Rameswaram & protect local communities from natural calamities. As part of the Tamil Nadu Sustainably Harnessing Ocean Resources project, 8,500 multipurpose artificial reef modules are being deployed to restore 2 acres of degraded coral reefs and 3 acres of seagrass beds. The initiative will involve over 300 members of local communities, integrating ecological restoration with community-based development. With technical support from IIT Madras and SDMRI, this project will help combat coastal erosion and revive marine biodiversity especially benefiting the endangered dugong population. On 22 January 2025, IUML MP K NavasKani visited the Sikandar Malai Dargah at the Thiruparankundram hill in Tamil Nadu. The Thiruparankundram hill is also home to the Subramaniya Swamy Temple, a revered holy site for the Hindu community in Tamil Nadu. On alleged information by the Police that there is no ban on carrying cooked food, but a possible ban on transporting sheep and poultry on the hill, NavasKani and his group carried and consumed cooked non-vegetarian food on the hill.

Yes, GHMC’s Project Udvasana offers a respectful and environmentally responsible way to hand them over for scientific recycling. Recent Divine Waste Collection Drive received an overwhelming response, with citizens depositing 753 kg of sacred items across 6locations. Encouraged by the public response, GHMC now plans to expand the initiative through temple partnerships across the city. The next Project Udvasana drive will be held in July. Stay tuned for the dates and locations.

Something incredibly exciting is happening in Gudalur in The Nilgiris District which has been facing serious human wildlife conflict for years but this is now set to change. The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has just launched another AI-powered Command and Control Centre using 46 AI enabled thermal cameras to detect wildlife movement early and warn people with real time alerts. This is backed by round-the-clock monitoring and rapid response teams. We plan to minimise wildlife and Human deaths aiming zero casualties.These are still early days, but the effort is on ground. Funded by State Planning Commission - Tamil Nadu the project is painstakingly executed by the dynamic & committed DFO Thiru N. Vengatesh and his energetic team. China is doing practical things to protect marine ecosystems. The “Blue Circle” project launched by Zhejiang Province on the east coast has collected about 77,000 tons of marine waste since 2020, including around 51,000 tons of plastic waste, cutting carbon emissions by around 66,000 tons, equivalent to taking over 50,000 cars off the road for a whole year. In 2023, it won the United Nations’ Champions of the Earth award.

Set amid the forests of the Nilgiris, the briquetting unit at Masinagudi in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is quietly turning a global ecological problem into a local climate solution. Lantana camara, one of the world’s most aggressive invasive weeds, choking forests across India and Tamil Nadu is being systematically removed and transformed into clean, eco-friendly fuel briquettes. Under a sustained restoration effort, nearly 125 hectares of Lantana are cleared every month, restoring wildlife habitats. What makes this initiative truly special is its complete circularity. Lantana is removed from deep forest areas with the active participation of local Tribal communities, transported to the briquetting unit, and processed again by Tribal workers into binder-free fuel briquettes using only pressure and heat. These briquettes are then supplied to nearby tea factories, replacing wood burning with forest waste turned resource.
