2,435 kg of waste removed from Gurugram in one massive cleanup drive! On Day 2 of CleanWithBittu, Bittu and his team reached Khedki Daula, Gurugram, and got straight to work. The area was covered in plastic and discarded waste posing a serious danger to stray cattle that can accidentally consume plastic while feeding. But this time, the garbage didn’t stay there. With the support of local residents, 2,435 kg of waste was cleared from the area. Next stop: Yuva Shakti Ghat, Noida, where Bittu is calling on people to join the effort to clean the Yamuna banks. FROM PLASTIC WASTE TO LASTING PATHS! Plastic waste is one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time, but it can also become part of the solution. Instead of relying solely on concrete, discarded plastics can be recycled and combined with sand or other aggregates to produce durable composite slabs for walkways, pavements, and selected drain covers. This innovative approach not only reduces plastic pollution but also lowers the demand for cement, cuts carbon emissions, and promotes a circular economy where waste is transformed into valuable infrastructure. By converting plastic waste into long-lasting construction materials, we can create cleaner communities, protect the environment, and demonstrate that what was once considered waste can become a resource for sustainable development. ♻️🌍

We made this video a couple of years ago and I think it's still the best summary of how ocean plastic pollution works. Key points: - <0.1% of plastic waste actually makes it to the ocean. Ocean plastic pollution is a leakage problem. - 1% of rivers contribute roughly 80% of plastic inflow. - Most of these rivers are in coastal cities in middle-income countries, where people now have enough wealth but no adequate waste collection infrastructure. - High-income countries barely contribute to the problem. OECD countries consume 1/3 of all plastic but are responsible for <0.5% of ocean inflow. If you live in a rich country and don’t litter, your contribution to the problem is basically 0. - Nearshore and offshore plastic pollution are very different. Nearshore plastic pollution mostly originates from rivers and is not very persistent; after leaving river mouths, plastic tends to drift around for weeks to months before washing up on a coastline. Plastic in the offshore gyres mostly originates from the fishing industry and is very persistent; it is trapped indefinitely because there are hardly any coastlines in these currents to ‘catch’ this waste. This is why our catch from our Interceptors and our ocean cleanup system looks totally different.

Bumped into someone the other day at the MG Road Metro Station in Bengaluru. Totally by chance. We had never met before this. He's a Canadian who has been living in India for more than a decade. I asked him what he does in India, and I was not expecting the answer he gave me. Andrew Almack is the founder of Plastics For Change (Plastics For Change), a company that collects discarded plastic and converts it into recycled materials for consumer products. They work with brands like L’Oréal, The Body Shop, Estee Lauder, and Tesco. Encouraging brands to switch from virgin plastic to recycled plastic is one side of PFC's mission. The other side is improving the lives of waste pickers. PFC provides waste pickers with fairer and more predictable prices for collected plastic, more stable income opportunities, safety equipment and training, financial-literacy programs, access to banking, insurance and loans, healthcare for workers and their families, education support for their children, vocational training, women’s empowerment programs, emergency assistance, housing support, and electric tricycles to reduce the physical strain of collection. They also organise waste pickers into co-ops and self-help groups, and they use Fair Trade premiums from recycled-plastic sales to fund community development programs. So far PFC has collected 87,200+ tonnes of material from the environment.

Niger Moves To End Plastic Pollution In an effort to combat environmental pollution, the government of Niger is enforcing a 12-year old law banning the use of plastic carrier bags in the country. The government gave Nigerien marketers 6 months to phase out their use of plastic bags, with the law set to go into full enforcement in January 2027. This move is in keeping with Nigerien President General Abdourahmane Tiani’s progressive vision for the country, which has continued to record economic, social and political wins since severing ties with its former colonizer France in 2023.

China is doing practical things to protect marine ecosystems. The “Blue Circle” project launched by Zhejiang Province on the east coast has collected about 77,000 tons of marine waste since 2020, including around 51,000 tons of plastic waste, cutting carbon emissions by around 66,000 tons, equivalent to taking over 50,000 cars off the road for a whole year. In 2023, it won the United Nations’ Champions of the Earth award.

A HISTORIC MOMENT FOR BUZSTOPBOYS! 🚀♻️ FROM PLASTIC WASTE TO PURPOSE. Today, we proudly celebrate a milestone that once seemed like a dream. Buzstopboys has successfully produced its very first recycled product from plastic waste collected from our environment. This is more than a product. It is proof that with vision, commitment, and collective action, waste can become opportunity and pollution can become possibility. POWERED ENTIRELY BY VOLUNTEERS. Every cleanup, every bag of plastic collected, every hour invested, and every step that led to this achievement has been driven by people who simply chose to serve. No one was paid to make this happen. It is the result of selfless volunteers who believe that protecting our environment is everyone's responsibility. THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING. Today, we celebrate a recycled product. Tomorrow, we build a movement that transforms communities, creates opportunities, and inspires a new generation to see waste not as an end, but as the beginning of something valuable. To every volunteer, partner, supporter, and believer in our mission-this victory belongs to you. WE DON'T JUST CLEAN OUR ENVIRONMENT. WE CREATE ITS FUTURE. The journey continues.

WOW 🚨 A company called Dow Inc has requested permission to discharge these pre-production plastic pellets directly into waters leading to San Antonio Bay The discharges would go into waters connected to the Victoria Barge Canal, which feed San Antonio Bay and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico The company filed a wastewater permit amendment application with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality This is real, this company really is trying to discharge an “unspecified amount” of these plastic beads into our waterways. This would literally legalize plastic pollution

Only 10% of Nigeria’s 2.5 million tons of annual plastic waste gets recycled. The rest? It clogs our drainage systems, pollutes our environment and threatens our health. But young innovators like Victoria Francis are changing that, starting from the streets of Akwa Ibom. Through Plastic Cultured, she and her team are turning collected waste into fuel, mattresses and plastic bins. Their innovation is about more than just recycling; it’s about creating jobs, protecting the environment and building cleaner communities for residents and tourists alike. Thanks to the Young Africa Innovates Programme, Victoria now has the support, mentorship and tools to scale her idea and push for a zero plastic waste culture across Nigeria. In partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, we’re empowering atypical and underrepresented innovators especially young women and community-based change makers to build solutions that work.
