🏝️ Bali's trash burning problem has just reached new toxic heights This week, Bali's biggest landfill has been ordered to close. The landfill is a more than 35 meter high mountain of decaying trash covering 32 hectares. It's closed because the gases emanated from it are toxic and ground water is being contaminated This means there's no other landfill of this size near to accept Bali's current trash. So the government has instructed people that "household waste should be disposed of at home" which in Bali means burning it! Trash burning has been a tradition for centuries in Bali (and Indonesia), but it used be mostly organic matter that was being burned Once plastic arrived the tradition didn't change though and locals started burning plastic too, pumping toxic gases into the air causing massive spikes of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases The tradition means on a daily basis around 7 in the morning and 6 in the evening, your neighbours will be burning their trash, and if you're not lucky there's a construction site near which will burn even more but all day! Burning plastic means you emit dioxins and furans, some of the most potent human carcinogens that exist I have friends in Indonesia with family with lung cancer cases, it's a real thing. My fear with Bali has always been that the digital nomads there might not realize the slow danger creeping up on them. You get used to the trash burning and polluted air very quickly in Bali and it probably doesn't affect you over a year or so But if you're there for many years, it will in some way or the other! For a community that's so about fitness and health, air quality is weirdly a consideration mostly overlooked in Bali

This is a device I use in my office: it draws outdoor air from outside the window into the room, passes it through a filter, and then vents it indoors. The excess air pressure pushes indoor air out through the gaps around the door. This way, indoor carbon dioxide, particulate matter, and VOCs can be reduced to very low levels. Even an air purifier with activated carbon cannot achieve this effect, because air purifiers cannot lower CO2 concentration. This device is modified from an AirFanta 3Pro. I reversed the fan installation and connected two reducing adapters so that the final diameter matches that of this plastic expandable duct. Finally, I sealed the window with a sealing fabric, leaving only an opening the same size as the duct. Its only drawback is the lack of heat exchange, so it requires some additional air conditioning load. It would be unsuitable in very cold or very hot places.

This video, supposedly of the Air India Express flight landing at #Phuket airport is doing rounds … the airline did not verify it as the same aircraft involved in the incident and am no expert but this looks bad and and a very hard landing , not at all as desired. Thankful that no injuries.. and all ended well for pax and crew. An Air India Express statement earlier in the day said: “We confirm that our Hyderabad-Phuket flight on 11 March experienced an issue with the nose wheel at Phuket Airport. The crew followed all standard protocols, and guests were deplaned. We thank our guests, the Phuket airport authorities, and all stakeholders for their cooperation.” - An Air India Express Spokesperson.”

As always, a good meeting with Mark Rutte Mark Rutte. We discussed the measures we agreed to implement with our partners during the G7 Summit. The key priority is working on strengthening our defense and obtaining licenses from the United States for the production of air defense equipment. We also spoke about adding new contributions to PURL. This initiative is very helpful in protecting lives, and it is essential that deliveries of anti-ballistic missiles be as swift as possible. I thanked Mark for the invitation to the NATO Summit in Ankara. We will work to make it effective for Ukraine’s defense. Thank you, Mark, for your support!

I met with President of Finland Alexander Stubb and Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre. I informed them about contacts at the leaders’ level in the E3–Ukraine format as well as our contacts with the American side. Right now, all our partners note that Ukraine’s positions on the frontline are significantly stronger, and therefore the approaches in diplomacy, which we are now working to reinvigorate, must be based precisely on this. Unfortunately, Russia is trying to compensate for its enormous losses on the battlefield with strikes on our cities and communities, on civilian infrastructure. That is why air defense missiles are our top priority. And we discussed how to secure additional supplies for Ukraine right now, as well as efforts to develop a European anti-ballistic missile system. I am grateful to Alex and Jonas, and to the people of Finland and Norway, for their steadfast assistance and support. We appreciate that our agreements are being implemented.
