Let's do the milk maths! Every infant elephant at our Nairobi or Kaluku Nursery drinks two bottles of specialist formula milk every three hours, day and night. In a single day, that adds up to 16 bottles of milk per baby elephant. (Wamata, Pardamat, and Mzinga, seen here, are three such Nursery babies!) A routine anti-poaching patrol. A tiny calf spotted alone in the Tsavo bush. Two pilots watching from the air for nearly two hours, hoping his family would return. They never did. Today, Arthi turns two. In this video from the month of his rescue, he was still finding his feet at the Nursery – getting used to his Keepers, his new herd, and the safety of knowing where his next meal would come from. Now he's an easygoing, independent young bull who enjoys doing his own thing but appreciates the company of gentle friends. He prefers play-wrestling with Taroha and Olomunyak over rougher characters like Pardamat – and that calm, confident nature has made him a favourite among the Nursery herd. His rescue led to another life saved that day. Two for the price of one. Happy birthday, Arthi. Adopt Arthi:

The elephants at our Nairobi Nursery love their days out exploring in the forest, but they also love the call of their bedrooms in the evening! Waiting for their arrival, bottles of warm milk, freshly mixed by their Keepers! Tonight, it was the turn of Mzinga to lead the home time charge, closely followed by Nyambeni, Shujaa and little Olomunyak. Each of these elephants was rescued as an orphan. With your support, we will rehabilitate them so that they can return to a fully wild life when grown. Christmas came early at Umani! On 15th December, a truck arrived from the Nairobi Nursery carrying three new graduates: Latika, Kerrio, and Kamili, all orphans with traumatic back stories who were starting the next stage of their reintegration journeys. The Umani herd were so excited to meet the newbies, Mwashoti ran to greet them before the door was even open. As the girls stepped out, everyone gathered round for introductions. And then, after their midday milk bottles, our new graduates jumped into the biggest swimming pool they'd ever seen – and proved themselves confident swimmers from day one. Precious cargo onboard! This was Arthi’s rescue ride to safety — he’s a small elephant, but it was a tight squeeze nonetheless. Arthi had been found alone by our pilot in the dense Tsavo bush back in August. At approximately one year old, the distressed baby faced starvation and predation without his herd. He actually enjoyed two rides in our aircraft - landing first at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery for an overnight pitstop, before boarding another flight to our Nairobi Nursery. We named him Arthi – a twist on the Athi River, near where he was found. Incredibly, Arthi's rescue would lead to not one, but two lives saved. On the way to collect him, our pilot spotted an adult bull with a severe limp. They made a note of his location, and following Arthi's rescue, they returned and successfully treated the bull. But back to Arthi...This sweet boy is the newest orphan to join our adoption program. Become one of his first adopters: #RescueRaiseReintegrate

There's always one. The darling of the herd. At our Nairobi Nursery, that's Kipekee - she has the Keepers and the other orphans alike wrapped around her tiny trunk. (It may look like our little girl is holding her own bottle, but look closely and you’ll see Keeper Peter is lending a helping hand). She usually has three or four nannies in tow, showing her the best plants and checking on her every minute. During mud baths, older elephants surround her – somehow never stepping on her despite all the splashing and wriggling. When she misbehaves, the older females simply look away. Kipekee is one of the youngest orphans at our Nursery — and you can become part of her journey through an adoption! Even for Kipekee, this is next level! Our small, spoiled girl crowns herself the princess of every corner she trundles into. Today, she decided to give herself a nice little throne atop Mzinga. Our nanny-with-a-heart-of-gold didn't even blink – she was just happy to have Kipekee time! Kipekee is the youngest in the Nairobi herd, which means she is rarely short of company. She arrived at our Nursery fragile, tiny and in need of round-the-clock care. The confidence she now shows is the result of months of patient, consistent support – from the Keepers who are with her every day, and our supporters who enable us to provide the care she needs. There she was – a tiny elephant calf, barely a month old, standing utterly alone on Msinga Hill. The vastness of Tsavo stretching around her, making her impossibly small. Then came a miracle: our Works Manager spotted her as he drove along. From such fragile and vulnerable beginnings, Mzinga has blossomed - thanks in no small part to the dedicated care offered by her Keepers, countless bottles of milk and your support. She's now inseparable from her best friend Nyambeni and has become rather infamous for her peculiar talents - eating whilst lying down and, most remarkably, climbing trees. Every morning, the Nursery herd heads out to explore Nairobi National Park. They begin their adventures in the forest abutting the orphanage, which is dotted with open glades and babbling brooks. During the rains, the latter swell and overflow creating endless muddy puddles, which for young elephants like Olomunyak are mini patches of paradise. Tali is growing stronger every day. After being found alone in the wilds of northern Kenya, Tali finally has the care and companionship he deserves. Rescued in February, he arrived at our Nairobi Nursery in a worrying state — gaunt, riddled with parasites, and incredibly weak. But elephants are creatures of family, and with specialist care and the presence of the other orphans, especially Mzinga and Nyambeni, we were able to bring him back from the brink. That he survived lions was a miracle. By June (here), the transformation was remarkable – weight returning, strength rebuilding, curiosity awakening. Now he's the one looking out for others. When Wamata had a fright, Olomunyak rushed to comfort her. He spends his days play-wrestling with Taroha, browsing alongside Mzinga and Arthi. The lucky one, indeed. When she runs into the forest, they jog along behind. The Keepers have a phrase for it: Kipekee & Co. Muridjo does most of the nanny shifts but you can also become a guardian to Kipekee too. Adopting Kipekee helps fund her milk, her Keepers, and her years of growing up with the herd that's already devoted to her:
