Hurricane #Idalia’s outerbands with embedded thunderstorms spiraling over Gainesville, Florida. Idalia’s eye should make landfall on the coast around sunrise tomorrow morning. This will be my 65th Tropical Cyclone intercept since 1987 !!

WOW! This cyclone in the Mediterranean Sea made landfall in Libya this morning. You could see right down through the “eye” to New Brega City — I wonder if there’s any video! This certainly seemed on the way to becoming a tropical cyclone. Impressive considering colder SSTs!

Well well well. The MLB radar from the Space Coast is looking interesting... sure looks like this tropical invest is trying to organize. It is nearing the Gulf stream which could be aiding. Thunderstorms appear to be trying to wrap around a center point. An official tropical depression coming into the Space Coast Tuesday morning is looking more feasible now...

ICON models predict over 500 mm of precipitation in some areas by the end of the week. Flooding is expected. The video shows the progress of the storm over the next 3 days:

The previously unnamed Tropical Storm in the shallow Malacca Strait has since been given the name Senyar. The system made landfall over the city of Langsa in Aceh, Indonesia at a 50 mph (80 kph), 996 mbar peak intensity. But Senyar isn’t done. The storm has now RE-EMERGED into the Malacca Strait and is forecast to soon make a second landfall, this one in Malaysia. While Senyar won’t be very strong (potentially only ~40 mph), a Malaysian landfall by a bonafide tropical cyclone is historically rare, as few storms on record have formed this close to the equator (due to the weakness of the Coriolis Effect here).

On this day in 2023, category 5 Hurricane Otis made landfall near Acapulco. It was the strongest landfalling Pacific hurricane on record, surpassing Patricia in 2015. It was also the costliest hurricane to make landfall in Mexico, with damage totaling $12-16 billion. It was originally forecasted to remain a weak tropical storm, but explosively intensified unexpectedly. In just 24 hours, winds increased by a whopping 115mph, the 2nd fastest in the basin. Only behind Patricia in 2015.

Fina is also trending further south as this ice blender of extremely cold convection swirls around her 958 mbar eye, meaning that landfall could potentially take place closer to the Ord River Nature Reserve.
