Hyundai Motor Group’s 42dot shared a video of an Ioniq 6 equipped with its in-house end-to-end autonomous driving AI, “Atria AI,” actually driving through downtown Seoul. In the video, 42dot CEO Park Min-woo rides along and provides commentary. He said that because Hyundai produces 7–8 million vehicles a year, once sensors and computing systems are standardized across those vehicles and data collection ramps up in earnest, they will be able to gather more real-world driving data than anyone else in the world. They also claim this approach will allow them to overtake competitors’ accumulated data volumes. They’re clearly talking about Tesla... But I question whether this plan will actually materialize on a realistic timeline. And collecting data isn’t the finish line. The world is deeper than that, and the real world is so complex that this will never be an easy challenge.

They said you you needed radars, you needed HD maps, and everything else to drive the car safely. We at Tesla have never believed in this. We always thought the core issue for self-driving is one of intelligence. You need to understand what is going on, you need to predict what is going to happen in the future, and no sensor in the world is going to tell you what's going to happen in the future. It is something an intelligent agent is going to have to figure out what is going to happen in the future and act accordingly to achieve safety. That is why we have bet on an Al first end-to-end driving stack that takes in camera images from all around the car, constantly paying attention and is solving for one thing, which is driving you safely. How do we know this is possible? Because humans drive around all day long using cameras. It is not something that we invented, it's already there, we just needed to find a way to put it in a digital computer. And that's what we believe we have built.”
