DuckDB just released Quack: a client/server protocol over HTTP. Any DuckDB can serve (quack_serve()), any DuckDB can attach to it. DuckDB-Wasm included since it's plain HTTP on port 9494. Some fun stuff : - A browser tab talking directly to a DuckDB server somewhere on the internet - Local-first apps with a remote target that speaks the exact same dialect - Notebook-to-notebook query forwarding Curious what people will build with this. We've got a few ideas brewing at MotherDuck too :) And while we're at it, can we finally retire the "DuckDB has no multi-writer support" take? There are plenty of options out there now, just depends how you want to slice and dice.

Simple example: (Server Component) (Client Component) (Server Component) is designed for the client. It needs to instantly open and close when clicked. is designed for the server. It uses packages that don't work in the browser and needs to fetch data close to where it's stored without exposing credentials. So, how can we nest a component that uses server APIs inside a component that uses client APIs... without using `import`? React props to the rescue! --- (0:00) 1-4: Reminder: Importing code forms a module dependency graph. Adding dependencies to a server or client bundle. (0:23) 5-6: Reminder: Using components eventually forms a rendered component tree. (0:37) 9: Oh no! We get an error when trying to `import` a client API (useState) into a server module. (0:44) 10: We know the trick by now: Add "use client" to mark `2.js` as a client entry point. This moves the module to the client bundle and allows us to use client APIs like `useState.` (0:51) 11: But we get a new error! "use client" moved all imported dependencies into the client bundle, including our ORM package, which doesn't work in the browser. Based on lots of beta feedback, the most requested missing feature of TanStack Table has been Cell Selection and Keyboard Navigation. And now, an official cellSelectionFeature has been added to V9! I originally started out thinking that we could just build an official example, showing you how to implement this stuff yourself, but then after I built it, I thought that it should at least be an official plugin. And then after just a couple hours more of refinement, I just ended up adding it as a stock feature. 😂 There are a couple reasons why this is now a new built-in stock feature: 1. In V9, all features are opt-in, so this doesn't bloat the js bundle for anyone not using it. 2. The keyboard navigation part of this feature is actually not a part of this TanStack Table feature... because that gets handled by TanStack Hotkeys! More on that down below 👇

Quick demo of Zero’s new background queries. Zero’s sync is query-based. Rather than specifying what data you want using rules or some other separate system, you just use queries. Right inside the client app, you do a query using a full sql-style language. You get filters, subqueries , limits, etc. Zero syncs the data backing these queries to the client. It’s important to realize Zero isn’t really a cache. It’s a replica. It’s eagerly replicating a precise snapshot of a slice of your database - the slice covered by the queries you have open. So there is never stale data in Zero. When you close a query we delete the rows uniquely returned by that query because we can no longer keep them up to date. Of course that kind of sucks for the common case of doing a query, navigating, then pressing “back”. Ideally we want that back nav to be fast. To address this Zero 0.17 adds background queries. You can add a ttl to a query and it will keep running and syncing in the background. This is much different than normal caching because this data stays up to date. If you make the same query again, the results will be *instantly* available *and already up to date with server*. If you make a different query the data from the background query is used client-side to answer the new query instantly if possible. This all happens completely automatically. Just by adding the ttl flag.
