Zack Snyder on his dyslexia: "It was a challenge for me when I was, you know, young in school, and all I wanted to do was make movies because that was the thing that I got great pleasure from and reward from. I love books, and I'm an avid reader, but I just have a hard time because of the way that I perceive. "I've had a great sort of - one side of me anyways - was really satisfied by art and drawing and sculpture and sort of visual expression. And I think that that started to, you know, was the thing that kind of made me feel un-frustrated. And also the way the system was designed, sort of not to support me when I was in high school at that time. "It was very difficult, you know, there was a lot of, you know, just, difficulty. My English teacher in high school was worried about what my career would be, and I'm like. He would be happy to know that I'm in the Writers Guild of America now. "But, I think that that all those things are, they're all... you can transcend all those things with perseverance and with interest and with with help. And I think that that's an important part of it. "And I just think I've had to adapt, and sort of... I have my own style of the way I write, I write all, you know, but I'm pretty prolific. And I love- I listen to tons of audio books on tape, unabridged hours and hours and hours. That's all I do when I'm driving in the car or wherever I'm doing. And it's helped me a lot. "And yeah, I mean, I just hope that anyone who is- feels trapped or frustrated by the world in general. You know, they need to just, I think that we all have like a magic spark, and you need to just find the thing that makes you, you know, inspires you and, and gets you excited and pursue it as hard as you can find your passion in the world. That's a, that's a great motivator."

Nothing motivates you like meeting the future version of yourself and hating what you see. I had worked a bunch of menial, minimum-wage jobs while I was in high school. I was a dishwasher, a bag boy at a supermarket, and a busboy. For reasons I explain in the book, I moved out during my senior year of high school and moved in with a friend and his father. I had to work these jobs to help support myself. A lot of my coworkers were guys in their early or mid-20s. At the time, I thought they were cool. I was in high school, and they'd buy beer for my friends and me, get us weed, sometimes other drugs. Once in a while, I'd see one of these guys at the same high school parties I was going to. Even as a 17-year-old kid, I recall seeing a 25-year-old coworkers pull up on a beat-up dirt bike and try to pick up high school girls. I thought, Is this who I want to be when I’m 25? Am I still going to be working the same kind of job and making $6.75 an hour? That scared me. So I decided to enlist in the Air Force at age 17. I got on a Greyhound bus in California and headed to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Enlisting was the best decision I'd ever made. It immediately removed me from all the negative influences around me, including the people I had willingly chosen to spend time with and the self-destructive choices I had been making. I stayed in the military for 8 years. Sometimes people read the early chapters of "Troubled" and tell me, “I don’t recognize this person. The teenager I’m reading about seems completely different from the person I’m talking to now. What explains the difference?” The answer is simple. If you spend 8 years in the military, you are going to change. And I needed all 8 of those years to fix my outlook, my priorities, and my personality enough to learn how to behave like a self-sufficient adult.

Q : You prepared for the entrance exam of music Department for two years? NJ : Back when i was in High School, I really wanted to do music. YJS : How was your study of practical music? NJ : I REALLY HAS NO TALENT. YJS : really? NJ : I don't really remember hanging out during my first and second years of high school. I always go back home, eat ramyeon or bread then run to practice room, I stuck there and only leave when the practice room door is locked. When my friends asked to hang out, I called them to the practice room to play. I thought things would go well, but as the entrance exams get closer... my teacher told me that “this is not going to work” YJS : After 2 years? NJ : my teacher said ; ‘For hardworking kids like you, it might be possible if you keep at it for a long time, but It seems like we won’t see any results in preparing for the entrance exam right now.’ Hearing that I was hurt as a teen, but that teacher did nothing wrong. Still, I cried a lot at that time, I cried even while crossing the crosswalk, alone. YJS : that teacher is just being honest, NJ : of course, i am thankful instead YJS : you can be thankful now but you must be hurt then. For two years of hard work you must’ve been thinking to yourself, Is this not my path? NJ : I’m sure it is not, bc i let my friend watched me doing it (music) and they got rage baited saying “Hey, I can do that too!” YJS : 🤣🤣🤣 NJ : i told them ‘why are you saying that?’ And they were like ‘i really can do it, give it to me!’ YJS : Are you really that talentless? NJ : yes, really now that i’m thinking about it I was really a ‘babo’ YJS : *sigh* #HEONAMJUN #허남준

Why am I not even surprised by this, I’m afraid if more and teachers have this epiphany then we won’t have any left to teach our kids. This woman used to be a teacher with a master’s degree. I can’t imagine devoting that much time and money to a profession only to find out I could make more just working a normal job. I think more and more that higher education is possibly turning into a scam. Growing up I was always told to focus on school, get an education and I will soar. Not too long after that I found out that wasn’t the case. I don’t even use my degree at all, I got it because I was told by my parents I had to. I worked two jobs while in school so I could graduate without debt, only to put it on the wall and forget about it. I later on went the family business route anyways as I always planned on doing. I feel I was pressured and sold a pipe dream that a degree would be the answer to anything financial for me, that it would unlock possibilities. For me, it closed many doors, many employers saw me as being overqualified. The turning point for me was when I used to go to a hotel with co-workers after work and I got to know my server. Turned out he had a degree in a similar field to mine and he was waiting on tables and in massive student debt because of it. I can tell the college dream turned into a nightmare for him. To spend thousands and not be able to use it to recoup my money would make me feel like the biggest fool around. I felt like if anyone came by to sell me magic beans, I would have a beanstalk in my yard. While not using my degree worked for me, there are so many more others that can’t say the same.
