Minimum wage hikes are unemployment machines that price the least skilled workers out of the market. It’s a price floor. If the value of low skill labor is below that line, the worker is priced out of a job. It does not magically make labor more valuable. In America Samoa, they cut thousands of jobs within 3 years (2007). In Seattle, a University of Washington study found that earnings of low wage workers fell as a result of hours lost (2015). In France, the minimum wage is so high relative to average pay that youth unemployment in the banlieues was at 25% for decades. In South Africa, households stopped hiring domestic workers they could no longer afford (2019). But if you’re an established worker who wants to eliminate the competition, it could be a solid move to support it.

The PM says he’s taking “down” the 50% university target, if you look at the detail of the announcement it is actually going up. His new target puts 2/3 into higher-level learning, with only 10% in higher technical education or apprenticeships. That drives university entry up to about 57%. And as for “laser focused”, young people are being failed by Labour. Youth unemployment is rising & jobs are shrinking because of their choices.

Youth unemployment dropped a full percentage point even though the jobs were created in healthcare and social services, not where young workers actually work. Retail just posted one of the biggest losses of the month. When the numbers look great but nothing in the real economy explains it, you are not looking at strength. You are looking at a story that is starting to crack.

My jaw dropped listening to this There are people gaming the foster care system making $26,000 per month. If they can get their kids on medications and have them fail classes, they get paid more money (WOW) “That's how bad people are making money out of foster care. So I go to this adoption assistant program — I meet this one woman and she's like, "Oh yeah, what you wanna do is you wanna get a D-rate kid." I was like, "What's a D-rate kid? What does that mean?" And she goes, "Oh honey, I make $28,000 a month off foster care." And I was like, "What?" And she was like, "Yeah, because I have this many kids." And she goes, "Here's the thing. You wanna make sure they fail in school. If they fail in school and you can get them on medication, your rate goes up."
