I discovered what appears to be a massive bug in Codex. I’ve been running Goal in a single session for over nine days, and the app’s implementation is progressing almost too smoothly. However, during that time, I noticed that the storage space on my MacBook’s 1TB SSD was decreasing... show more

I checked the “sessions” folder and found that this bug has been occurring since 9:00 a.m. JST on July 22. Prior to that, only JSONL files smaller than 10 MB (almost all <1MB) were created. It is now possible to share a JSONL file that exceeds 1 GB.

I’m grateful for all the attention this has received while I was asleep. To cut to the chase, this was a Codex CLI bug caused by several reported but unresolved issues that had existed since before June. In cases such as context compaction and sub-agent creation, the JSONL implementation was causing full copies of the session to be duplicated. On GitHub, some users reported that this consumed over 400GB of storage. While I was getting three hours of sleep, Codex implemented the fix and rolled it out as a temporary replacement. I’ve already created a pull request, but unfortunately, pull request permissions for the Codex CLI repository is invitation-only.

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs @thsottiaux take a break from shitposting to fix please

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs i have also had extreme issues with SSD read/write but then i figured out that 16GB RAM is likely too little for running on macOS at least, and it's making page swap

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs you can ask codex to make a script to clean these up

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs Hrmm, add that to the sqlite ssd killing I guess.

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs I actually was wondering how my 500 GB filled up so fast and I'm thinking it's from the codex

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs @thsottiaux

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs Click

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs Did you fix you sqllite writes too? Goal is not worth the tax

It’s been half a day since I posted this, and I’m surprised that there hasn’t been a single response from OpenAI—not even a comment on the GitHub issue. I understand that it’s Sunday night in San Francisco and late Monday night there, but isn’t the response too slow given the seriousness of the matter? (This turned out to be caused by a known issue.) I’m just joking, but it makes me wonder if OpenAI has secretly conspired with NAND manufacturers to break consumer SSDs.😂

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs Duplicating the whole context every turn would eat SSDs fast

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs when was the last time you updated? if this is the same thing as the SSD bug, it's been patched.

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs I have another problem with codex. If it’s focused, it hammers GPU to 50% and WindowServer process to 40% CPU core On M1 macOS 26.5.2. I have to keep terminal app in focus and disable Pet for it to stop misbehave

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs yeah thats the whole context snapshot pattern, writes the full state each turn instead of a diff nine days of context at 1.5gb a pop is a genuinely brutal way to find that out 😭

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs codex 的应用是一个很糟糕的架构,虽然很好用

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs @thsottiaux the serious SSD thrashing bug in ChatGPT has not been fixed fyi

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs I noticed something similar.

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs mine has 75.2 mb but i been using gpt work only for 2 weeks and mostly no codes.

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs Thank you. I checked mine. but it's like this. I wonder if the cache is not working properly...🤔

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs Weird. Mine are nothing like this. few KB -> max 25 MB.

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs You need a worker it seems to summarize and prune those files it sounds like.

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs same problem noticed here, had to have codex clear it out

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs Yes, please report it to Codex OpenAI team immediately. This is happening to lots of people, and they aren’t noticing. Ask a thread in codex to submit a bug report for you and it will.

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs Same! We found that as well yesterday!!!

@thsottiaux @OpenAI @OpenAIDevs This makes me really scared and worried
