Man how did I forget Hartman did Gigi? He's right though, these movies had some crazy talent for the dubs

He gives this really weird editorial when he talks about Grave of Fireflies. Like, he earnestly tries to gas anime up, but he has weird observations. “The characters skin may be plasticky, and doll-like, but these movies have heart!” Huh?

To him realism = real, & simple faces is such an abstraction that he can't empathize with anything less than that. It might also be him trying to introduce anime to people who ONLY watch live action, so I wouldn't be harsh on his observations. This was novel for U.S. audiences.

Siskel & Ebert were the reason I got into anime. When I was a kid I used to religiously watch their show with my mom. One fateful day I saw their review for Ghost in the Shell and I knew right then I had too see that movie.

I didn't always agree with Siskel and Ebert's takes (particularly when Ebert chastised South Park BLU or when he said "video games aren't art), but I feel when Ebert passed over a decade after Siskel that people's standards for films really sunk.

I really gotta find an archive of Siskel and Ebert and add it to my local archives.
