Weight painting lips and eyelids has always been a major pain when it comes to character rigging, so our co-founder Vladimir Mokhov spent a couple of weeks and made a tool to automate the entire thing. 🔶 This will be included as part of a toolkit for our upcoming Ultimate Character Rigging course (in Blender) at TOAnimate 4️⃣ The tool uses 4 points on a loop (corners and upper/lower mid points) and breaks it into quadrants, then distributes weights evenly along the points within the quadrants based on the step count, calculating distance between the points. This makes sure that every point is weighted identically and consistently. The weight generation/distribution is done through geometry nodes, and the rest is with python scripting. It’s been really heavy on my mind all day long, seeing alllllllllllllllll your comments & lengthy essays about what exactly IS too much ass. Admittedly I’m no mathematician, I thought I’d created the perfect ratio… I ran the numbers again and again. I'm putting a lot of attention into getting a high quality transfer for the Face Proxy Mesh we're adding to the Fondant Custom Normals Blender addon. Even if the proxy has great Normals, it will not matter if the transfer is distorted. A basic world space Nearest Surface (aka Nearest Face Interpolated) transfer can get screwed up if there are gaps between the meshes. And if they are different shapes and poly counts, there will be! So the first big piece of the puzzle is getting a clean transfer. Before transferring Normals, a transfer space is made and a UV map is transferred from the proxy. Then any other data needed can be transferred in that UV space. As long as it is right, any other data will be clean! (Normals or anything else you might want.) And a UV map is easy to debug because you can put a grid texture on it. If the grid is evenly spaced, then distortion is minimal. This clip shows the differences in distortion between a basic World Space transfer and a better transfer space made by blending Sphere projection and a simple projection of the face forward onto the proxy (used down the center line.) Different faces will need slightly different configuration. Most of this is automatic, but the addon will have some simple controls to adjust it to different face shapes.

Here is the Geometry Nodes Weighted Normals with Laplacian Blur on a full character (a vroid). It easily improves the shading even on game topology with almost no setup. I built this as part of my quest to improve real time toon shading. 3D anime models are popular, but use of dynamic light is rare even among high quality vtuber models. This is for several reasons, but a big one is simply that it takes a lot of Custom Normals work to make 3D cel shading not look like a jagged mess (other pieces of the puzzle are issues like deformations, multiple lights, etc). And fixing Normals is tedious, especially on existing game topology. I have focused on proxy meshes for priority areas like character faces, but they aren't an efficient solution for the whole body + outfit. I wanted something I could just throw on any model and make it at least not a jagged mess anymore even if it wasn't perfect. As you can see from this clip, this does that very well! And vertex groups can be used to control the style of the effect and power. It still can't smooth beyond what the topology density can support, but the topo itself is no longer a problem (for higher res, could be run on a subdivided version of the model and then baked to a Normal Map.) The only changes I made to this model were adding a weld modifier to merge split edges during interpolation, and a vertex group to select the skirt. I have not yet added full handling and logic for detecting edges with big angles like the skirt, or for handling boundaries like on the hair, so both those areas can get better too. You can also see that while it successfully smooths out the Face, it isn't really stylistically correct there. That is still best done with a proxy mesh to define a new shape. This is part of the tools I am working on for Fondant. We are putting together a Blender Addon to release this + a proxy mesh tool for the face, and are working on resolving other problems in-engine to fully bring dynamic light to real time 3D toon shading. #TheUnfolding: When things get too complicated in Cursor, get Claude Desktop to write you a little helper in html that you can run in Chrome. I've had a very confusing time with AI trying to get my concept for rivers (fluid channels) and paths across, so I worked with Claude step-by-step and I think we are almost there. This is a beautiful system. It means I can have fluids and paths on the same hex. Paths can cross rivers. Rivers can enter and leave any face. I could have two different fluid types passing through. I can widen and narrow the rivers (they could be full face to meet a full water hex). Rivers can even meet (but I probably won't attempt that just yet). Once perturbed it will look very natural. It's more triangles that a simple hex mesh but I only need them when I have fluids and paths - so it shouldn't push the triangle count in the mesh up too much. And I could LOD them if needed - but I'd like to see distant lava glowing in the night! #vibejam with @levelsio

Ten games into my senior year at Mississippi State — about a month into the season — and I still hadn’t pitched. The previous year, I logged only 4 innings. I spent the entire fall and most of the spring preseason dealing with an injury, and quiet frankly walking on thin ice on even staying on the team, if you’re not able to be productive in any way you’re gone, that’s how the SEC works, & I knew everything would have to go perfectly for me to even have a shot. This is something young players at any level should pay attention to: what to do when you’re not playing much — and how to handle it. During that time, I worked relentlessly. Every day, I prepared like my opportunity was coming tomorrow. I knew that when my name was called, I needed to be ready — not just ready to pitch, but ready to prove I belonged in the SEC.
