That sounds incredible, Nature is Amazing! Must be a sight to see a new tower of ice rising from the water.

Nature’s power on full display 🌊❄️ That 200 ft ice tower rising like a frozen giant — absolutely breathtaking and terrifying at the same time. Climate change isn’t coming. It’s already here.

Iceberg calving happens when massive chunks break off a glacier or iceberg, sometimes causing the ice to flip or spin as it crashes into the water. 🌊❄️

Remarkable scene at Loch Coire an Lochain this evening. Large chunks of ice are ‘calving’ from the snow-pack and are being blown across the water surface to where my tent is pitched. I’m half-expecting a polar bear to pop up on an ice floe and eye me up as dinner…

At Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia, our very own medical correspondent Jonathan LaPook, M.D captured a massive chunk of ice breaking off from the glacier’s base, marked by dark sediment on the ice. The dramatic calving left behind an iceberg with only about 10% of it visible above the water.

We witnessed the raw power of nature yesterday just south of Seward Alaska! It was incredible to watch this massive glacier calving, sending a huge wave through the water. Absolutely breathtaking to see firsthand. Glacial calving is a natural process where large chunks of ice break off from the edge of a glacier. This typically happens at the “terminus” or snout, where the glacier meets the sea, a lake, or even dry land. When these massive pieces of ice fall into the water, they become icebergs, or in smaller pieces, “growlers” or “bergy bits.” The process is primarily driven by gravity and the movement of the glacier itself. As a glacier flows—acting like a slow-moving river of ice—it experiences immense internal stress. When it reaches a point where it is no longer supported by land or where it extends out over the water, the ice becomes unstable. Cracks called crevasses form in the ice, and when these cracks penetrate deep enough, a section of the ice can no longer hold its own weight and snaps off, crashing down with incredible force. Calving is a dynamic and loud phenomenon that often triggers significant waves. It is a normal part of a glacier’s life cycle, and very common in the warmer summer months.

A stunning view as an iceberg flips over in Argentina. 🧊⁣ This iceberg phenomenon is rare and known as "iceberg calving." It is the breaking of ice chunks from a glacier. If the center of gravity of the chunk is high enough, it can even flip over the ice chunk.⁣

This is where the flash superflood on the Nepal-Tibet border today first began. From an altitude of 17,000 ft on Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas, a ~2,000 ft-wide chunk of glacier ice snapped off and fell ~4,000 ft to the valley below, generating an impact 6.3% as powerful as the Hiroshima nuclear explosion and causing a Magnitude 5.2 seismic event. Upon impact, this massive ice chunk was then pulverized into a violent 100+ ft-tall surge of glacier water, rocks, and mud that flowed into the nearby Trishuli River. Funneled by Nepal’s extremely steep and jagged terrain, the resulting flood wave became an unsurvivable wall of water and debris for the immediate communities downstream.
