If you ask me, I’d choose pixel-style graphics over hyper-realistic graphics any day of the week. A game with lifelike graphics loses an essential part of what makes games special at their core. The Chrono Trigger intro (1995) is a perfect example of pixel art at its finest.

Metal Slug turned 30 this year. It has aged incredibly gracefully; and I think the main reason is its pixel graphic style. Unlike early 90s vector graphics, ray tracing, or hyper-realistic styles, pixel art ages much better. You could release Metal Slug today as an arcade game and it would still work perfectly. Why game companies focus on graphics instead of gameplay? 1) the devs must show the game to upper management. They don't play it. They just look at the cut scenes. So to get greenlit you need cool cut scenes that the players will probably skip. 2) the game journalists who review your game only care about screen shots. They will play it for maybe 10 minutes. Superficial looks, not depth, is what they will review. I'm not decrying graphics. Great graphics make a game better. But game play entices players. If devs ignore management and journalists you can get incredible games. Remember Dwarf Fortress? And look at Fallout: New Vegas - really, kind of chunky graphics even for its time, but terrific gameplay. Also neaer-perfect soundtrack.

How is this game turning 40 this year? I know some will argue that it wasn't the most complex game ever, that you could exploit the jousting "glitch", that it was relatively simple to beat after a while. Maybe all true. You know what's also true? For its time those graphics, the iconic intro sequence, the soundtrack, the cutscenes, were all beyond what you had seen before; I would take any bet your jaw dropped. The sword fighting scenes with the shadow-play backdrop... that's not just a game with good graphics, that's art! If you can name a game from 1986 with better graphics, be my guest. I would also say that any C64 fan recognizes the opening track blindfolded within 3 seconds. Legendary!

Westwood was such an amazing game studio. One of their timeless classics is Eye of the Beholder 2, which was released in 1991. The intro alone gave me nerd chills - anyone who ever played Dungeons & Dragons would remember Khelben Blackstaff, and if he considers you his friend, what an honour! The game itself is your typical dungeon crawler. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way but appreciating it for what it was and is, a great game of its genre. Excellent graphics (I am such a sucker for that 90s pixel style), good sound effects and music, and an easy to use interface, making the real-time fights fast paced but manageable. Among the greats of Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, Ultima, and Wizardry, the likes of Eye of the Beholder or Lands of Lore were probably a tier below, but I always loved coming back to them. To me, this game is emblematic of the early 90s, and for that I love it.

Turrican 2: The Final Fight (Factor 5/Rainbow Arts, 1991) is one of the best action games ever, even to this day. Made in Germany: Manfred Trenz (design), Chris Huelsbeck (music), Andreas Escher (graphics) created a near perfect game. The intro alone sucks you in instantly with Chris Huelsbeck's abolutely genius tracks, especially the pace switch at the 0:18 mark. It "only" sold around 50,000 copies across all systems, but if you ask any old school Amiga gamer, they'll probably tell you they've played (and loved) Turrican II. If there was an all-time Amiga top 50 games list, I would easily include Turrican II in i. Would you?

At which point did we sacrifice realistic physics in the name of realistic graphics? I'm surprised that no Game developer has come remotely close to making an Euphoria Engine of their own, most Games today look beautiful, yet lack any form of realism in terms of ragdoll physics. I'm not criticizing Rockstar here by any means, every R* Game released in the past few years had amazing Ragdoll Physics, I'm simply shocked that no other Game Studio has managed to bring something remotely close to GTA IV Physics even to this day.

Did you play this one back in the day? I was never that good at FPS games, but there were so many great ones to choose from in the 90s, that they often ended up in our LAN weekend sessions. One of those was Unreal Tournament (Epic Games, 1999). I loved the incredible variety of levels and its designs, which made it stand apart from other shooters of its era. Brilliant graphics, fluid gameplay (even on PCs that weren't high end, like the ones you would need for Quake III Arena for example), kickass sound, and your typical capture the flag or deathmatches. Many magazines gave it "Game of the Year" awards, the metacritic score was 94%, and if you ask any gamer what the best FPS of the 90s were, Unreal is definitely part of that group. I recently played it again and it has hardly aged.
