This is probably the mechanical legacy of why binary is like that in the first place. Nice visualization of a simple mechanical system if not. :)

Best way to show is on fingers. From thumb: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16. So count to ten will be: 1 - thumb (00001) 2 - forefinger (00010) 3 - thumb + forefinger (00011) 4 - middle finger (00100) 5 - thumb + middle (00101) … and so on
