A wide grip upright row is one of the more useful but misunderstood exercises people do (or don’t do). It’s not a trap exercise (although some traps are involved for sure). It’s a side delt exercise. Don’t think about pulling the bar up with your hands. Think about driving the elbows out and up. It’s a lateral raise, but holding a bar…. My clients often get confused when I explain it that way. But if you can disassociate from “pulling up” and associate with driving elbows out and up you’ll engage and feel exactly where it’s supposed to hit. Elbows should finish a few inches above the delts. Notice I’m using straps? It’s not because I NEED them. My grip isn’t going to fail on these with 50 lbs. I’m using straps so that I can relax the hands and forearms and only think about my elbows. It helps. I like these for higher reps although you can absolutely go heavier on them which is one advantage of these over lateral raises.

Therapist Trey Tucker came on Relatable to talk about anxiety. I asked him, "If you could define anxiety, how would you define it?" Tucker: "Fear of the future. Fear of the unknown. The verse, 'Be still and know that I am God' used to make me so angry. I'm like, God, what do you mean be still? Like, I got a real problem here. I'm in a storm. Why do you want me to just be still? And what I realized is that the word, and I believe it's "Rapha" in the Hebrew, it doesn’t mean just ‘don’t move.’ It means ‘release your grip.’ The idea that I thought that I had control, that was a lie anyway. If I can start to realize like, yes, the circumstances might happen that are negative or I might be in the middle of a battle right now, but if I can loosen my grip and stop white knuckling it, then I can realize that like oh—God is God, not me, and He’s going to take care of me no matter what happens. That really is the solution to anxiety. It’s not changing your circumstances or slapping meds on it.”

Rory McIlroy was asked ahead of The Open if he agrees with the idea that “Trackman Golfers” don’t do well at Opens: “No, I wouldn't totally agree with that. I think that TrackMan or any launch monitor, it's a very useful tool. I think you can get too into the numbers, which then can be detrimental. I think, yeah, TrackMan can be very useful. It can be -- I think it can actually help you with the feel of your golf swing at times. “If you see a certain number on TrackMan, it gives you a feeling of what you need to do, so if you can sort of match up the number you see on the screen with a feel that you have in your golf swing, I actually think you can become more feel-based. “I use TrackMan a lot in season because I feel like it's hard to work on technical positions when you're just trying to manage your pattern through the course of the season. Pick up anything heavy, hold it on one side, and stand dead straight. Don't lean, don't tip. It's testing two things at once. Your grip, and your core fighting to stop you folding toward the weight. Bryson DeChambeau speaks about the balance between control and power in his golf game: “Golf isn't about hitting it 400 yards. I proved that a couple years ago. You've got to have a good wedge game, good putting, good iron play. So there is a balance. “But I'm never not pursuing how to swing it faster or have it come off the face faster and then learn how to control it. That's kind of my goal. I always go to how hard can I swing it, and then how do a back off of that. It's just my mentality. So I'll forever be pursuing a little bit of speed as time goes on. “This golf course, you can't swing it hard out here. You can hit it far, but you have to control your ball more than you can kind of just bomb it and let it go wherever. Fairways are tight. “I'll forever be chasing speed. Hopefully the technology can catch up with where our swing speeds are going because right now, any minor mis-hit can make the ball go quite a bit off line. That's why I've got what I'm using now, then working on some stuff, as well, to see if there's any improvements to be made from what I have now, and we'll see where the future takes us. “I'm excited to unveil some special stuff here soon. After all, club face is the biggest influencer of start line and grip is the biggest influencer of club face. Learning a good grip, or at least a match up that will allow your particular grip to function, is essential to developing directional control. What we all want is predictability. We want to be able to aim to a given location, make a swinging motion, strike the ball well, and watch it travel somewhat near said location. I already said the Ruger LCP Max was one of the best pocket guns on the market. And I meant it. But then Ruger and Magpul teamed up and dropped the LCP Max with the Magpul EHG grip module… and now I might have to take it back. Not because the original LCP Max got worse. Because this new version makes it feel like a rough draft. The LCP Max already solved the biggest problems with the old pocket .380 formula: better capacity, better sights, better recoil, and a gun small enough to disappear in your pocket while still giving you 13+1 rounds of .380. But the Magpul grip changes the entire feel of the gun. The texture, the traction, the extended grip, the way it locks into your hand — it makes this little pocket pistol noticeably easier to shoot and control. The original LCP was a “get off me” gun. The LCP Max became a “stay the hell away from me” gun. This new Magpul EHG version feels like the LCP Max finally went to the gym. So if you pocket carry, or you’ve been thinking about getting an LCP, this might be the one to put your hands on first. Because that grip might sell it all by itself.
