I'm disappointed the BMA is going ahead with this week’s strike given the average consultant’s NHS earnings are expected to increase to £134K a year. My door's always open to discuss non-pay issues but this pay award is final so I urge the BMA to end their strikes immediately 👇

I hugely value NHS consultants' work. That's why we've accepted the independent pay review body recommendations in full, giving them a 6% pay rise this year, on top of last year’s 4.5% increase. We've also reformed pension tax rules for consultants which the BMA campaigned for.

Providing sub inflationary pay offers ans then imposing without discussion isn’t in the “door’s always open” spirit. Strikes are likely to continue

The 3 people deciding that NHS Drs are paid enough despite Drs having 26% pay reductions & reducing Who have had pay restoration as MPs in 2016 & pay in line with inflation - not that they needed it - as their wealth keeps on growing It’s the sick that need Drs not the healthy

So please tell us how and why MP pay has increased from £61000 in 2010 to 86500 this year 41% increase plus expenses and subsdised meals and drink Yet average consultant pay in 2010 £111000 to £134000 now 20% increase

Oh get lost, you don’t give a damn. My elderly mum is critically ill in hospital right now, I’m frightened for her BUT I still support the Doctors. Give our #NHS staff, all of them, the salaries they deserve! They are our National Treasure. #ConsultantsStrike

What he isn't telling you is that with this stance, the only option is to let the quality of the NHS get even worse than it is now. Only a @UKLabour government has a chance to fix the mess that has been created by the Tories over the last 12 years.

They have no other choice because you don’t listen. It’s not just about pay and you know it!!

The problem with much of the debate here is it frames strike action as an individual act of self-interest. But it’s not, #strikes are collective action for something greater than personal gain, Eg. standards, patient safety, retention etc. Striking Drs illustrate this very well.

Tomorrow I’m going out on strike as a Resident Doctor in England. I don’t take that decision lightly. I became a doctor to look after patients, not to walk away from work. But right now, I’m watching A&Es overflow, ambulances queue outside hospitals, and patients treated in corridors even on non strike days; while doctors who want to work in A&E are competing 14 to 1 for training places, and around 5 to 1 in GP. 30,000 doctors applied for 10,000 training jobs this year; thousands of future Consultants and GPs turned away due to Government imposed caps on training jobs. Doctors are ready to step in. The system isn’t letting them. On top of that, after years of pay erosion, Wes Streeting has recommended a real tents pay cut for doctors for the next financial year. These factors in combination makes it harder for doctors to stay, to train, and to build a future in the NHS. Wes Streeting’s offer doesn’t change this. The headline 4,000 jobs he announced are a cannibalisation of existing locally employed doctor jobs, so the total number of doctors doesn’t increase at all as a result of his offer. There’s also nothing on pay, despite assurances we were on a ‘journey’ to pay restoration last year. The BMA offered to meet Wes Streeting as soon as the November strikes ended. He ignored the BMA for weeks. Instead, a last-minute rushed offer arrived from him with less than 24 hours to respond. The BMA put it to resident doctors. Nearly 30,000 of them said it wasn’t good enough. For me, this is about jobs and pay together. You can’t reduce waiting lists without training doctors, and you can’t keep doctors in the NHS while cutting their pay in real terms. Tomorrow, I’ll be standing shoulder to shoulder with Resident Doctors across England on the picket lines; not because we want to strike, but because we need a solution from Wes Streeting that’s actually credible. That still remains within the Government’s gift to deliver.
