Sanders: You know why Trump has a nucleus of support? People say, “I go out and I vote every two years. You tell me to vote every four years. So what? I’m going nowhere. Democracy is not working. You know what I need? I need a strong guy. I don’t give a damn about the Constitution, the rule of law. Give me some guy who’s going to crack some heads.” It’s not just in this country. You’re seeing this all over the world. So what we have got to do is make democracy work for working people. If tomorrow, God willing, we passed a Medicare for All single-payer system so everybody in this country could get quality health care, people would say, “Huh, you know what? Democracy, that ain’t a bad idea.” “I just took my kid to the doctor. We had an operation. It didn’t cost me. That’s pretty good. And you know what? My kid is going to college now, a really good school, and it’s tuition-free. I like democracy.” So democracy is more than just having elections every two or four years. Democracy is a luxury only developed countries can afford. Any nation that still has lots of developmental work to do will remain poor as long as it still employs constitutions, “good governance”, “checks and balances” and other rich people’s bs of that nature. No country has ever developed by unleashing democracy on its economy and none ever will. Every country that has ever made it economically started by suspending or ignoring democracy and by weaponising what they now call “corruption”. It may not be pretty, but it’s the only way. Of course, it’s not guaranteed that authoritarian developmentalism will work, a lot can go horribly wrong. But democracy will most definitely not work. Yes, it might keep the status quo humming along, but that’s it. In short, authoritarianism is a gamble and democracy is a guarantee—of mediocrity. Just look at South Africa. Duma Boko is finding out this crucial fact of life in real time.

But when something addresses the concerns of the American people, we need to find common ground and get things done. This isn’t just about the election in 2026 or the election in 2028. It’s about right now. It’s about making people’s lives better now. A lot of people will say, “Well, the Republicans didn’t do that. They didn’t help Biden get things done. They didn’t work across party lines when they controlled the House.” And that’s true. It was the least productive Congress in modern history… But just because that’s what they did doesn’t mean that’s what we should do. It’s not just about winning. It’s about trying to move the country forward, solve problems, and make people’s lives better. This business isn’t worth it for the ego or just for the competition—“I’m right, you’re wrong; I win, you lose.” It’s only worth it if we’re actually making the world a better place to live in. We need to call out the Republicans when they do crazy stuff, when they’re extreme. But we also need to work with them when we can find ways forward to make our country a better place to live in.
