NEAR MID-AIR COLLISION AT HOUSTON IAH Listen to the moment United Express heading to Jackson alerted ATC: “Tower, Commutair 4814, we just had an RA.” A serious close call unfolded last Thursday at Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH) involving a United Express/CommuteAir Embraer E145 (N11176) departing for Jackson and a Volaris Airbus A320neo (N546VL) bound for San Salvador. Some more insight to the callsign SAM47, it refers to the 47th POTUS. Anywhere the POTUS flys, there is at least one backup jet that carries the callsign SAM (Special Air Mission) and then the whatever number the President is shadowing them. For Biden, it was SAM46, for Trump it was SAM45, and for Obama it was SAM44, etc. The POTUS will travel onboard the C-32A (Boeing 757) as well as the VC-25 (Boeing 747). I wanted to share some video of the C-32A picking up Obama in Chicago before the inauguration for a NatGeo special on AF1. It gives you some unique insight into this USAF squadron that is tasked with flying not only the POTUS, but various heads of state and politicians. You’ll see in the video the communications station on the C-32A which is rare to see. This aircraft is capable of a variety of communication abilities from phone calls to connecting the POTUS to the National Command Authority and launching nuclear weapons. There are other aircraft that are involved during POTUS travel and they do a pretty good job of hiding. 😎

BREAKING: Extremely sad scene show the world’s last KC-747 tanker (Boeing 747-131F), 5-8107, on fire following an Israeli airstrike at Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran on March 7, 2026. The IDF falsely claimed that the aircraft was associated with the Quds Force, which is absolutely untrue. It was a tanker aircraft used to refuel F-4E Phantom IIs and was a veteran of Operation H-3, having refueled IRIAF F-4Es that struck the H-3 air bases in Iraq on April 4, 1981. 1981 was also the last year this aircraft flew to Syria, when it refueled IRIAF F-4Es at an altitude of just 100 feet over the Iraqi-Syrian border. It was never used by the Quds Force and never carried any weapons or ammunition for them. The aircraft was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time when the Israeli Air Force targeted Mehrabad Airport in Tehran. It was not alone. The strikes also destroyed two passenger Boeing 747s (one of them already decommissioned) and two civilian cargo Boeing 747s, in addition to three Iranian Air Force Boeing 747s, one KC-707 tanker and two RC-707 reconnaissance aircraft that were bombed at Mehrabad Airport on March 7, 2026. In the audio, the pilot states: “We can’t land on two two… if you don’t get us to runway three one right, we’re gonna declare emergency.” When the request wasn’t immediately approved, the crew followed through: “We’re declaring emergency. Several people have messaged me about the Fire Dept getting dispatched to Columbia Metro shortly after 7pm for an aircraft emergency so here’s the ATC tapes of what happened with a little explainer below. An American Airlines regional carrier (PSA Airlines) operating flight 5108 from Reagan National (Callsign Blue Streak 5108) was on final approach and they received an EICAS message for “inop steering” so they broke off the approach at 7:04pm and went out and held while they worked through the issue. EICAS = Engine-Indicating and Crew-Alerting System (think of this as the check engine light on your car, but a bit more advanced bc it will tell you what the issue is.) At 7:17pm they were done working the issue and advised they were ready to come back to the airport. The airport had emergency equipment standing by just in case there was an issue and at 7:28pm they touched down and rolled off one of the high speed taxiways and originally waited for airport ops to provide a tug to tow them to the gate, but the flight crew was able to use some differential thrust (using thrust from one engine to steer the aircraft) and they were able to safely get to the gate with no further issues. Shortly after 7:30pm airport ops had completed a fod check on runway 11/29 and advised everything was good and to show the runway back open. Fod = foreign object debris. Basically they checked to make sure the aircraft didn’t lose any parts when it landed. In the end it was about a 30 min delay but no one was hurt and everything is all good.

Helicopters operating in and around major airports is very common. In the United States, the FAA publishes prescribed routes and altitudes for helicopters in 8 major cities across the United States, I have flown almost all the routes in a helicopter mostly at night in over 7 of the 8 cities (8th one being D.C.) Here is the route PAT25 was flying last night, it’s called Route 4 over the Potomac River. These routes have been in place for many years and particularly in DC, they are vital for the police, military, and national security to circumnavigate the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport safely 24/7. You are operating a complex aircraft in a complex environment and you can get task saturated even with a two pilot crew like PAT25. Task saturation also can happen to the most experienced air traffic controller. To give you an example, ATC may call out traffic to you and you confirm that you have it insight or maybe you spot the wrong aircraft. It takes one little thing to happen to lose sight of that traffic in question, e.g. a light flashes on your instrument panel, the person sitting next to you or behind you asks a question, you have multiple radios that you are listening to, you spot a bird, and the list goes on and on. There are so many questions that will probably never get answered like, were both of the pilots wearing Night Vision Goggles (which give you around a 40° field of view), did they identify the correct aircraft that they assured ATC they had insight and will maintain visual separation with, how many other aircraft was the controller trying to keep separated, why didn’t the controller inform the CRJ about the helicopter? It’s a mind boggling amount of data to digest even for a pilot or controller with thousands of hours of experience. The reality is, this is a very tragic and horrible aviation accident that will hopefully invoke some kind of change to prevent this type of disaster from ever happening again. I believe given the high visibility of this accident happening in the Nation’s Capital will lead to changes. What those changes might be, who knows yet. Either this route 4 over the Potomac is going to get changed or landings to runway 33 at Reagan will no longer be authorized. This is the human element in aviation, we’re still discussing accidents that took place about 100 years ago and it’s important to discuss these accidents because you want to remember them and hopefully learn from them and not repeat the same mistakes twice. In the United States, the FAA publishes prescribed routes and altitudes for helicopters in 8 major cities across the United States, I have flown almost all the routes in a helicopter mostly at night in over 7 of the 8 cities (8th one being D.C.) Here is the route PAT25 was flying last night, it’s called Route 4 over the Potomac River. These routes have been in place for many years and particularly in DC, they are vital for the police, military, and national security to circumnavigate the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport safely 24/7. You are operating a complex aircraft in a complex environment and you can get task saturated even with a two pilot crew like PAT25. Task saturation also can happen to the most experienced air traffic controller. To give you an example, ATC may call out traffic to you and you confirm that you have it insight or maybe you spot the wrong aircraft. It takes one little thing to happen to lose sight of that traffic in question, e.g. a light flashes on your instrument panel, the person sitting next to you or behind you asks a question, you have multiple radios that you are listening to, you spot a bird, and the list goes on and on. There are so many questions that will probably never get answered like, were both of the pilots wearing Night Vision Goggles (which give you around a 40° field of view), did they identify the correct aircraft that they assured ATC they had insight and will maintain visual separation with, how many other aircraft was the controller trying to keep separated, why didn’t the controller inform the CRJ about the helicopter? It’s a mind boggling amount of data to digest even for a pilot or controller with thousands of hours of experience. The reality is, this is a very tragic and horrible aviation accident that will hopefully invoke some kind of change to prevent this type of disaster from ever happening again. I believe given the high visibility of this accident happening in the Nation’s Capital will lead to changes. What those changes might be, who knows yet. Either this route 4 over the Potomac is going to get changed or landings to runway 33 at Reagan will no longer be authorized. This is the human element in aviation, we’re still discussing accidents that took place about 100 years ago and it’s important to discuss these accidents because you want to remember them and hopefully learn from them and not repeat the same mistakes twice. JUST IN: Air traffic control audio released following a plane crash in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The plane, with five people on board, crashed in the parking lot of a retirement community. Multiple vehicles in the lot caught on fire. According to new audio, the pilot was heard telling ground agents that there was an open door and he couldn't hear anything because of the wind noise. For the first time in five weeks of war with Iran, two American combat aircraft went down in separate incidents. One of two service members onboard an F-15E that was shot down was rescued, but a military official tells the News Hour the whereabouts and status of the second crew member is either unknown or has not been disclosed. During a harrowing rescue mission today, a Black Hawk helicopter was also shot at but was able to return to base. And the pilot of an A-10 Warthog was reportedly rescued after being shot down as it was leaving Iran's air space. Stephanie Sy reports.
