Remembering the moment we first met Imp nearly one month ago... On the morning of 22nd February, Ishanga made a surprise appearance at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit. But the biggest surprise was yet to come – by her side was a tiny baby underfoot! Head Keeper Benjamin and the team had been waiting 22 months to meet tiny Imp, as she has been called, and she was every bit as special as we hoped. As so many orphans have done before her, Ishanga had returned home to share her joy with the human family who raised her! One of the loveliest things about what we do? Watching wild-born babies grow up. This is Ola. She's a miracle baby but it's actually her mother, Olare's, story that makes this scene even more special. Back in 2009, an elephant calf was found clinging to her dying mother in the Mara. With Vets left with no choice but to end the mother's suffering, we brought the orphaned calf to the Nursery. That baby was named Olare, and we raised her as our own. Today, Olare is all grown up, living wild with a daughter of her own: little Ola – two years old, round-cheeked and bright-eyed. Discover their story:

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Kaikai! A tiny orphan with a big character, she arrived at just one week old after her mother died (this was filmed not long after). Raising orphaned calves like her takes everything we've got: round-the-clock feeds, Keepers sleeping beside her every night and bottles of specialist formula milk. This is what the herd is about – helping the less able, supporting the youngest herd members, standing together. What makes this herd even more special is the thread that connects them. Baby Aura is orphan Arruba’s first calf, born earlier this year. Mum Arruba was separated from her family and was raised by our Keepers. When she was ready, we watched her march into the wild to reclaim her place among our ex‑orphan herds. Next to Arruba is Kenia, who was abandoned at eight months old during a stampede. Today she is one of Aura’s devoted nannies, rarely far from the little calf’s side. Mwitu (right) rounds out the trio, but she isn’t an orphan. Our Head Keeper Benjamin had been waiting. It had been nearly a month since ex-orphan Ishanga's last visit, and we knew she was heavily pregnant. Last weekend, his patience was rewarded when Ishanga strode up to our Ithumba stockades – and tucked close beside her was a brand-new baby girl. We've named this delightful bundle of joy Imp. Born 22 February 2026, she is the daughter of one of our most remarkable survivors – an elephant who was attacked by a lion during her own rescue as a calf, and went on to build a wild life in northern Tsavo. This is a celebration for our Keepers like Benjamin, but also our foster family – those of you who knew Ishanga's story long before the birth of Imp and helped us raise and then rewild her, so she could start her own family! Why do our ex-orphans bring their wild-born calves home to the Keepers? We can't know exactly what's in their heads. But after ex-orphan Yatta first made the pilgrimage many years ago, nearly every ex-orphan mother has followed suit, and walked her newborn to the stockades, often within hours of giving birth, and introduce the calf to the people who raised her. It's likely a mix of trust (the Keepers were her family for years), safety (the stockade compound is calm and predictable), and recognition (these are the people she knows). Whether she's actively imprinting her calf with that knowledge or just following her own instinct to come home, the calf grows up understanding that our Keepers and the dependent orphans are a part of their family too. Epiya believes that milk should be enjoyed at maximum speed, and who are we to deny her. She andKeeper Walter have come to an agreement! As he remarked, deftly filming-while-feeding, “Epiya loves her bottle without the lid, so I have to adhere to her request.” Now a happy, feisty elephant, Epiya was once a traumatised orphan who we rescued in 2022 after her mother succumbed to the drought. Wait for it…Sagala absolutely nailed her brand new baby’s debut! Right after giving birth, she headed to our Voi stockades so she could share the moment with her human-elephant family. As you can see, the dependent orphans were delighted to meet their new baby ‘cousin.’ Not so long ago, Sagala was a dependent orphan herself. Although she is now living wild, she remains deeply boned to the people who raised her for the better part of a decade. It’s tummy-o’clock and Wangalla is making her feelings known. She was rescued as a days-old newborn, so we feed her a specialist milk formula on demand. Over time, she’ll transition to hand-fed bottles of milk on a schedule – every three hours, day and night. We suspect that, then as now, she’ll chivvy the Keepers along if they’re even a minute late, and she’ll make sure to watch over and inspect the milk-making process too! Raising an orphaned elephant is a lot like raising a human child — it requires love, leadership, and the commitment of a lifetime. We make the same promise to every elephant we rescue: To nurture them through their infancy, giving them the confidence and competence to ultimately reclaim their place in the wild. But even after they have grown up and established their independent lives, our orphans continue to return 'home' to the people who raised them. They come back to us in times of trouble — seeking help for an injury or even bringing back wild friends in need. They also return in times of celebration — nearly every ex-orphan mum has chosen to introduce us to her wild offspring. Family is everything to elephants. It's everything to us, too: Our founder, Dame Daphne Sheldrick, was the first person in the world to successfully raise infant orphaned African elephants. Today, her legacy continues through both her own family, who proudly build upon the conservation foundations she laid, and the generations of orphaned elephants charting their own history in the wilds of Kenya. All those greens and milk bottles are adding up – we weighed Kaikai this weekend and she registered a very sturdy 172.5 kilograms (380 pounds)! Kaikai is one of the youngest orphans in our care. We rescued her in May 2025, after her mother died of natural causes. It was an uphill battle, but today she is absolutely thriving. Want to support Kaikai’s journey back to the wild? Her name is Bita Shafiei. Nineteen years old. She believed her country, Iran, deserved better, and she fought for that belief with a clarity and courage that threatened those who fear free minds. The regime responded the only way it knows how. It took her. They abducted her for speaking out, hoping that if they erased her voice, people would forget what she stood for. Bita was not just speaking for herself. She spoke for people who were too afraid to speak. She carried the voice of others on her shoulders. And now that they have taken her away, the responsibility falls on us. She stood up for everyone else. Now we stand up for her. They wanted her story to die in the dark. Don’t let that happen!
