my best friend had the Panasonic one. He bought the arcade joystick and god, how cool it was to just play that almost pixel perfect arcade conversion. We played like crazy for months.

If we count the US, there was the Jaguar (advertised as 64-bit but that was only its RAM). I only started learning about these consoles way after its market time, and since i'm not from any of the target markets i usually look at releases from a global perspective.

i feel if they could squeeze alpha 2 into a snes cartridge, it probably was possible to put super turbo on the snes. But since they already put sfii on the snes 3 times at that point in time, they went with a then newer sf game.

... and, oddly, the SSFII Turbo port for the 3DO was truly competent. For a time, it was the best one available on consoles (until the SF collection came out for the Saturn).

I never could find a joystick for this console. That’s so cool. I had a fz1. Still have mines from 1994. This also is the one time the English release had a better cd art. The picture of akuma on the actual cd was amazing.

By the way, it’s really funny that the back of the Korean release of Street Fighter II shows screenshots from Final Fight instead of the actual game. 😄

I still remember the thrill I felt when I first saw the opening of Tales of Phantasia. It was probably the first time I’d ever seen a Super Famicom game with a vocal opening, and it honestly felt groundbreaking back then. I also loved how the combat played out like an action game, and overall it was just a really fun experience. At the time, I never imagined the Tales series would become such a long-running franchise, but seeing new titles still coming out even now is pretty amazing. I’ve only played up to Tales of Destiny. Which game in the Tales series did you enjoy the most?

Personally, I didn’t like Alpha 3 because it felt too complicated. I played it a lot in arcades, but I think I played it the most on the PlayStation 1. Do you like this game?

Looking back now, the Super Famicom version was released in December 1990, when the system’s maximum cartridge size was 8 megabits (1 megabyte). The characters filled the entire screen, fighting with overwhelming intensity. And when the distance between them increased, the screen would dynamically zoom out — that effect felt absolutely revolutionary at the time. It was stunning. On top of that, the facial damage system was incredibly realistic. The more you got hit, the more your character’s face would swell and bruise. It added a level of immersion that I had never experienced before. And did you know? The concept of the “super move” was first introduced in Art of Fighting. That was the legendary Ryuko Ranbu. When your life gauge was almost empty, you could unleash it and turn the tide of battle in a single moment. That comeback mechanic felt amazing. Oh, and if I remember correctly, this was also the very first “100 Mega Shock” game. The game was later ported to the SNES, Sega Genesis, and PC Engine CD. Among them, the PC Engine version was surprisingly faithful to the arcade original.

Unfortunately, Sega didn’t sell the arcade hardware and instead operated it through a rental system, so outside of Japan, the game was nearly impossible to find in arcades. Thankfully, with the huge leap in performance of the PS3 and Xbox 360, Virtua Fighter 5 received the first truly complete console port in the series. I remember having so much fun playing it back then. Sadly, in Korea, the Tekken series was so widely available in arcades that very few people even knew about Virtua Fighter 5. It’s a shame that such a great game slowly faded into obscurity. Eventually, the series seemed to lose its momentum, and I thought we would never see a new Virtua Fighter again. So you can imagine how happy I was when Sega announced that they were working on a new entry. Is there anyone out there who has been waiting for a new Virtua Fighter as long as I have?

Because it came on a floppy disk format, it allowed players to SAVE their progress — a groundbreaking feature at the time. Later on, it was re-released in NES and Famicom cartridge form, and that’s probably the version most gamers experienced first. The floppy disk version of Zelda is originally yellow, but I swapped the shell using a gold cartridge from another game and made myself a golden Zelda floppy disk. Pretty cool, right?

When I was young, I never once saw anyone who actually owned one. One of the Wondermega’s most distinctive features was its motorized CD lid that opened and closed automatically—absolutely magical at the time. Other than that, it didn’t really have any standout features. There was a Mega-CD game released under the name Final Fight CD. Unlike the Super Famicom version—which lacked two-player support and didn’t include Guy—this version was ported at a level that was almost identical to the arcade original. I’d say it’s probably the most popular title in the entire Mega-CD library.

I lived in the US for a year back in 2003. Matrix Reloaded came out in May, and the hype around it was seriously insane, beyond imagination. In the movie, the main characters are using this super cool phone, and then in a close-up shot, I spotted the 'Samsung' logo right there on it. It felt absolutely mind-blowing and magical. I came back to Korea full of hope that this thing would actually go on sale worldwide. But later I found out it was only released in the US as a super limited edition of just 5,000 units (or so I heard back then). I was hugely disappointed… but eventually, I tracked one down and bought it from a collector. Even now, looking at it, the design is still so damn cool. I took it to a carrier to try using it for real, but they told me it’s a 2G phone and can’t be used anymore. That was another big letdown, I remember it clearly. PC Engine’s Street Fighter II’ Dash was something I first encountered while collecting, and it genuinely surprised me. The fact that such a game could fit on a tiny HuCard was impressive in itself, and the actual gameplay didn’t feel lacking at all—even when compared to the Super Famicom or the Mega Drive versions. I also tried playing it on the PC Engine GT. The screen was decent enough to be playable, but the controls were almost impossible. With Start, Select, and Buttons I and II already taking up both hands, you’re basically forced to use three fingers, and then use your foot to hit the button that switches the remaining attacks. Trying to play Street Fighter like that is honestly absurd.

Do you know The Simpsons animation? Konami made an arcade game using the Simpsons IP, and it was a lot of fun. I naturally expected it to be ported to home consoles and waited for it, but in the end, it never came out on any console. Interestingly, though, it was ported to PC. It had a few shortcomings, but I have great memories of playing it on a 386 computer and having a really good time. Anyone else play it?

Among all the games released on the PlayStation, I think Final Fantasy VII was truly the greatest. There had been cinematic games before, but the visual quality of this game was on a completely different level compared to anything that had come before it. Maybe this was also the moment when game developers first fell into the AAA trap, struggling with blockbuster-level development costs. Personally, Final Fantasy VII was the most visually shocking console game I had ever experienced.
