March 7, 1991 was the day the arcade version of Street Fighter II appeared, and this year marks its 35th anniversary. It was the game that sparked the fighting game boom. I first learned about the existence of the Super Famicom through the news that Street Fighter II was coming to it. By the way, it’s really funny that the back of the Korean release of Street Fighter II shows screenshots from Final Fight instead of the actual game. 😄

I still remember the thrill I felt when I first saw the opening of Tales of Phantasia. It was probably the first time I’d ever seen a Super Famicom game with a vocal opening, and it honestly felt groundbreaking back then. I also loved how the combat played out like an action game, and overall it was just a really fun experience. At the time, I never imagined the Tales series would become such a long-running franchise, but seeing new titles still coming out even now is pretty amazing. I’ve only played up to Tales of Destiny. Which game in the Tales series did you enjoy the most?

Street Fighter Zero (Alpha) 2 was the most popular entry in the series. Compared to the first game, it had much better balance, and the additional characters made it far more appealing. Personally, I didn’t like Alpha 3 because it felt too complicated. I played it a lot in arcades, but I think I played it the most on the PlayStation 1. Do you like this game?

At the time, rumors were circulating that the game would be ported to PC, so when it was suddenly announced for the Super Famicom, it came as a huge shock. Although Guy was missing and two-player co-op wasn’t supported, the mere fact that we could play Final Fight at home felt like a blessing in itself. Looking back now, the Super Famicom version was released in December 1990, when the system’s maximum cartridge size was 8 megabits (1 megabyte). Considering that the arcade version had more than twice that amount of data, it seems clear that these limitations led to those difficult compromises. Beat ’em up games were already popular in arcades before Final Fight, but after its release, the genre truly boomed, eventually leading to Capcom’s finest belt-scrolling action titles—culminating in Dungeons & Dragons, the pinnacle of their beat ’em up legacy.

I used to play Street Fighter II all the time, but the first time I saw Art of Fighting, the visual impact was unbelievable. The characters filled the entire screen, fighting with overwhelming intensity. And when the distance between them increased, the screen would dynamically zoom out — that effect felt absolutely revolutionary at the time. It was stunning. On top of that, the facial damage system was incredibly realistic. The more you got hit, the more your character’s face would swell and bruise. It added a level of immersion that I had never experienced before. And did you know? The concept of the “super move” was first introduced in Art of Fighting. That was the legendary Ryuko Ranbu. When your life gauge was almost empty, you could unleash it and turn the tide of battle in a single moment. That comeback mechanic felt amazing. Oh, and if I remember correctly, this was also the very first “100 Mega Shock” game. The game was later ported to the SNES, Sega Genesis, and PC Engine CD. Among them, the PC Engine version was surprisingly faithful to the arcade original.

Before its official release, a FF8 demo was included with Brave Fencer Musashi. I still remember watching the opening for the first time. The moment the CGI started playing, I literally got chills. It was unforgettable. When it finally launched, its popularity was just as incredible as FF7’s. The Junction system was a bit complicated at first, but there’s no denying it’s a true masterpiece. And that ending… “Eyes On Me.” It was the perfect emotional finale that sealed the experience. The FF8 package shown in the video is the PC version released by Samsung in Korea. I’m curious if it was released in a similar way in other countries as well.

Did you know the original The Legend of Zelda was first released on the Famicom Disk System, not NES? Because it came on a floppy disk format, it allowed players to SAVE their progress — a groundbreaking feature at the time. Later on, it was re-released in NES and Famicom cartridge form, and that’s probably the version most gamers experienced first. The floppy disk version of Zelda is originally yellow, but I swapped the shell using a gold cartridge from another game and made myself a golden Zelda floppy disk. Pretty cool, right?

Considering that the PlayStation 5 disc model launched at 75,000 yen, it’s shocking that the Wondermega was released back in 1992 for 90,000 yen. When I was young, I never once saw anyone who actually owned one. One of the Wondermega’s most distinctive features was its motorized CD lid that opened and closed automatically—absolutely magical at the time. Other than that, it didn’t really have any standout features. There was a Mega-CD game released under the name Final Fight CD. Unlike the Super Famicom version—which lacked two-player support and didn’t include Guy—this version was ported at a level that was almost identical to the arcade original. I’d say it’s probably the most popular title in the entire Mega-CD library.

I lived in the US for a year back in 2003. Matrix Reloaded came out in May, and the hype around it was seriously insane, beyond imagination. In the movie, the main characters are using this super cool phone, and then in a close-up shot, I spotted the 'Samsung' logo right there on it. It felt absolutely mind-blowing and magical. I came back to Korea full of hope that this thing would actually go on sale worldwide. But later I found out it was only released in the US as a super limited edition of just 5,000 units (or so I heard back then). I was hugely disappointed… but eventually, I tracked one down and bought it from a collector. Even now, looking at it, the design is still so damn cool. I took it to a carrier to try using it for real, but they told me it’s a 2G phone and can’t be used anymore. That was another big letdown, I remember it clearly. Do you guys like the Matrix movies too? I’m a total huge fan!

PC Engine’s Street Fighter II’ Dash was something I first encountered while collecting, and it genuinely surprised me. The fact that such a game could fit on a tiny HuCard was impressive in itself, and the actual gameplay didn’t feel lacking at all—even when compared to the Super Famicom or the Mega Drive versions. I also tried playing it on the PC Engine GT. The screen was decent enough to be playable, but the controls were almost impossible. With Start, Select, and Buttons I and II already taking up both hands, you’re basically forced to use three fingers, and then use your foot to hit the button that switches the remaining attacks. Trying to play Street Fighter like that is honestly absurd.

Do you know The Simpsons animation? Konami made an arcade game using the Simpsons IP, and it was a lot of fun. I naturally expected it to be ported to home consoles and waited for it, but in the end, it never came out on any console. Interestingly, though, it was ported to PC. It had a few shortcomings, but I have great memories of playing it on a 386 computer and having a really good time. Anyone else play it?

There had been cinematic games before, but the visual quality of this game was on a completely different level compared to anything that had come before it. Maybe this was also the moment when game developers first fell into the AAA trap, struggling with blockbuster-level development costs. Personally, Final Fantasy VII was the most visually shocking console game I had ever experienced.

I think a lot of people were introduced to Final Fantasy starting from 7. Since it was released on the PlayStation and became a huge global success, it naturally gained widespread recognition. But among older players, many still remember just how popular 6 was when it came out on the Super Famicom. Personally, Chrono Trigger was an incredible game as well, but compared to the impact that Final Fantasy 6 had on me, it felt slightly less overwhelming. Especially when I listen to that opening theme, I still get chills to this day.
