We witnessed the raw power of nature yesterday just south of Seward Alaska! It was incredible to watch this massive glacier calving, sending a huge wave through the water. Absolutely breathtaking to see firsthand. Glacial calving is a natural process where large chunks of ice break off from the edge of a glacier. This typically happens at the “terminus” or snout, where the glacier meets the sea, a lake, or even dry land. When these massive pieces of ice fall into the water, they become icebergs, or in smaller pieces, “growlers” or “bergy bits.” The process is primarily driven by gravity and the movement of the glacier itself. As a glacier flows—acting like a slow-moving river of ice—it experiences immense internal stress. When it reaches a point where it is no longer supported by land or where it extends out over the water, the ice becomes unstable. Cracks called crevasses form in the ice, and when these cracks penetrate deep enough, a section of the ice can no longer hold its own weight and snaps off, crashing down with incredible force. Calving is a dynamic and loud phenomenon that often triggers significant waves. It is a normal part of a glacier’s life cycle, and very common in the warmer summer months.

I built a multiplayer embroidery sampler for the internet. It's called Common Thread. 🪡 Built the entire thing in Figma Make, first thing I've ever vibecoded with it. Every visitor gets a patch on a shared canvas. You pick a thread color, choose a stitch type, and craft your art. A sampler is a piece of fabric where you practice and collect different stitches — a reference guide and playground in one. They were meant to be passed between hands and added to over time. There is a scene from the movie "Ballad: Na mo naki koi no uta" (which seems to adapt the same plot as Shin Chan) where they depict the exact same form of pike fighting. This is based on a historical source ( Zōhyō Monogatari) written in the 1660s, that instructs us to "not only thrust" as "it's better to strike. Raise your pike higher than the opponent's and strike in unison". This would definitely not be standard practice for most of the sengoku jidai. My friend Gunsen History will like me to state that, this advice is from a time where pikemen were there mainly to support the gunmen, and thus wouldn't take the central part of the fighting. It would make sense then, for these men to not be as used to fighting and to develop some sort of drill to effectively end the fights without a prolongued engagement. Still fascinating to see an interpretation of a primary source portrayed onscreen.

At the end of the day, as I discussed with Jordan Peterson, there are just two games to be played, one real, one Woke. The real game is called civilization. The false game is called power. A long post/🧵: The real divide between Woke and not Woke is in power. The Woke game is the power game, and it is a parasite on the real game, which is civilization. Here's roughly how Jordan described the foundation of this idea. There are various rules, norms, etc., in the game society ultimately plays, and these create a hierarchy that is based upon competence, mostly organically, obviously imperfectly. If the rules of the game are good enough, the imperfections (natural corruptions) are minor and society thrives. If they are not, you'll have problems. This is the real game of building society, and it ultimately has to favor competence. This game must be called "civilization" because that's not just its goal but it is also what it does. It civilizes us beyond our base instincts and impulses so we can work together productively in a healthy manner that generates prosperity. As Jordan put it, this game is also a reservoir of value, and reservoirs of value create parasites. What are these civilizational parasites? They’re parallel games organized by and around malignant psychopathological modes like Dark Tetrad traits, psychopathy, and Cluster-B disorders: histrionic, borderline, antisocial, and narcissistic. These malignant pathologies render people incompetent except at manipulation, so they cannot rise far in a healthy civilizational hierarchy. What do they do, then, to gain power and status in life in a game they cannot actually play? They define a parasitic parallel game and rope people into playing it. It is parasitic in that it draws off the real game (civilization) and mimics its form so that the hosts (people in society) are less likely to realize it’s there, but it doesn’t build or create of its own. It siphons and tears down. What drives this game is failing to see what makes the civilizational game and the hierarchy it produces legitimate in the first place. This is characteristic of the psychopathologies at its heart. The narcissist imagines the world should be serving himself at the top, but it isn’t. The more aligned with truth and justice a civilization game is, the more successful it will be, and the more legitimate its hierarchy. The power that results as a byproduct is extremely legitimate in a highly aligned civilization where people haven’t forgotten their charge to defend the game itself, which is what we call responsibility. A civilization game strongly aligned with truth and justice filled with a preponderance of responsible people will produce a thriving, prosperous society. It only works this way every time. Not everyone is responsible, though. Some are also incompetent because of various pathologies (not talking about for other reasons). Those pathological players may, under certain circumstances, create a parasitic side game with themselves on top through a variety of strategies that mimic the values and principles of the real game while distorting them into power plays because their game is power, as discussed above. WARFARE 101: The best plan on any battlefield gives you the most options up to the last possible minute. That is a principle every combat commander learns early, and it is one we should be applying to the situation in front of us right now. We have multiple wars unfolding at the same time, and the pace of decision-making has to match the complexity of the threat. Ukraine has nearly fallen out of the public conversation, yet thousands of people are being killed every day. That war has not paused. It has simply moved out of the headlines. The same is true of the conflict in Iran that we are currently engaged in. Every one of these fights deserves clear-eyed attention and a full set of options on the table. I believe there are solutions to the war in Ukraine and to the conflict we are navigating today against Iran. Solutions exist when leaders preserve flexibility, listen to honest counsel, and refuse to lock into a single course of action before the situation demands it. The moment a commander surrenders his options, he surrenders his initiative. The moment a nation surrenders its options, it surrenders its leverage. This is the discipline of sound strategy.
